“The Returned” recap (1.5): Zombies Stick Together

This episode opens seven years in the past with an angry Toni leaving the farmhouse. He yells,”Why did you let him out!?!” as his mother follows closely behind. He jumps in his truck and as he drives Serge is already stalking a victim in the Underpass of Death. Luckily, the woman’s boyfriend arrives and Serge retreats to the shadows. Unfortunately Julie is not so lucky and we witness her horrible attack once again. Toni runs into the underpass and finds his brother suckling and biting Julie’s open wound. In horror he hits Serge in the head with a crowbar and puts Julie into the flatbed of his truck. He leaves her at the garage entrance to the Emergency Unit of the hospital and drives off.

Back at the farmhouse, Toni buries Serge who regains consciousness. This doesn’t stop Toni and he whacks Serge with his shovel to quiet his cries for his mother who listens from the house. Man, I wouldn’t want to mess with Toni. He is hardcore when it comes to completing a task.

Back to present day, Lena lies in bed at the farmhouse. Serge open her hospital gown and stares at her wound like it is a Grand Slam Breakfast at Denny’s. Before he can dig in Lena’s cellphone rings and he rushes outside to answer it. Frederic asks if Lena can hear him as Serge holds the phone and eventually hangs up. He then sits outside and watches Lena sleep through the window until a persistent Frederic sends her a text. Serge rises, grabs an axe and destroys the phone. I hope she has a good wireless replacement plan.

Camille, who is dressed exactly like Lena, waits for Frederic outside school. As they walk she tells him that Lena was telling the truth and she is different. She jokingly admits to being a vampire and lunges at him. He then quickly ditches her, much to Camille’s disappointment.

Sandrine talks to Pierre in the doorway to his office. She is looking for Victor and Ms Costa, both are missing from the shelter. Cut to the pair walking to the diner where she witnessed Simon go medieval on the bolo tie-wearing waiter. After Ms Costa suggests Victor order the burger, they sit and chat about being zombies. Victor wonders why his parents didn’t return as well and Ms Costa suggests that maybe they are looking for him. When she asks if he knows Pierre some how, Victor falls silent. She tells him no one can hurt them now which causes him to ask if they have the ability to hurt others. I think that question has already been answered when Ms. Payet became cat food.

At the dam, the lowered water level has revealed what appears to be a steeple to a stone church. Meanwhile, Adele is speaking to a group children including her daughter, Chloe, at the library and asks them what can be found in the lake. She teaches them about how the steeple is part of the remnants of a previous town that was flooded when the old dam broke. As the children ask questions, she is distracted by Simon who appears outside the room. Her attention snaps back when she thinks she hears Chloe ask why Simon killed himself. Adele asks her to repeat the question and Chloe asks how the dam broke. Adele then stares into space until Her daughter asks if she is alright. She says yes and fakes a smile. It’s so embarrassing when your crazy Mom ruins your class trip by going catatonic for a bit.

A team of scuba divers explore the ruins under the lake. Suddenly they look up to see the corpses of animals floating in the water.

Claire is on the phone as Camille makes a snack. She has received word about Lena’s escape. When Claire brings up Frederic as a possible person she could be with, Camille asks her if she knows if they have been intimate. She walks off in a huff when her mother has no dirt to share on their relationship. Back at the farmhouse, Serge sits and stares at Lena as she sleeps until he hears the sound of Toni’s truck pulling up to the house. He quickly shuts the bedroom door and meets his brother outside to receive his delivery of food. Toni comes inside and as he talks to Serge, Lena awakens in pain. She passes out and falls off the bed then Toni tries to enter the room. He thinks his mom has returned and Serge plays along. Freaked out and thinking his mom doesn’t want to see him, Toni stumbles back to his truck and drives off. I probably would have checked the room if I knew my brother had a tendency to stab and snack on women, but I guess Toni isn’t too swift.

Thomas comes home to Adele sitting on the couch and staring off sadly. He suggests she take a pill and get some rest, but she refuses. She wants to know why he didn’t tell her about Simon sooner and how he truly knows that it was suicide. He tells her there was several witnesses and she heads upstairs as Chloe enters the room. Chloe asks if Adele is upset about, Simon, the angel. Thomas makes her promise to inform him if Simon returns. At the shelter, Pierre tells Simon he has to leave. The police will be coming due to the disappearance of Victor and Ms Costa. He tells Simon he will help in finding a way to get him out of town. Laure arrives at Julie’s looking for Victor. Julie slams the door in her face when Laure tells her that he left the shelter with a homeless woman.

Pierre arrives at Claire’s with Simon and she warmly invites him inside. They introduce him to Camille as a temporary housemate who is like her. Once they are alone she asks him if he remembers how he died or knows why they have returned. He too has no idea about the circumstances leading to his death or any clue as to why they are both back now. Camille says she can share in his pain of past romance and then promises to do him a favor. Zombies have to stick together.

At the hospital, a doctor speaks with Alcide about Lucy’s condition. He shows him her how her wounds seem to be fading away. At the same time, Thomas and Michael arrive at the lake. They are shown the animal corpses that were found during a “routine” check.

The pastor speaks with Adele in her home on behalf of Thomas. All she wants to know is if he was aware Simon killed himself and why he didn’t tell her. As he gives a knowing look, we cut to the town surveillance team, which has spotted Ms. Costa smoking on a bench alone. Maybe they should think about installing some cameras in the underpass. Just a thought.

Lena awakens once again and finds Serge sitting next to the bed. He has made some concoction with the nettles his Mom used to make for him when he got hurt. Lena allows him to spread the paste on her wound after he explains that he found her passed out and is trying to help her. Serge becomes increasingly excited as he touches her injury and quickly gets up to make them food.

Julie arrives at the police station and asks Laure if the homeless woman gave them any information. Laure tells her that apparently she split from Victor but any info she provides can’t be considered reliable. She tells Julie that she claims to have been born in 1943 and that she is the wife of the late Mr. Costa. Julie looks in at her and is shocked to see what appears to be the woman in all the pictures at Mr. Costa’s home. She asks Laure to speak with her alone. Julie tells Ms. Costa that she believes her and then asks if the little boy she left the shelter with was once dead as well. Ms. Costa informs her that he died shortly before her and he will return to Julie once his “work” is done. Julie admits she wonders if she, too, is dead, and Ms. Costa tells her that there is only one way to find out. Just then Laure calls for Julie, leaving us to wonder what she was told.

Camille plays messenger for Simon and tells Adele to pack a small bag and meet him at the bus station in time for the last ride out of town. She tells Camille that she won’t be meeting him. Camille tries to change her mind by sharing that she is like Simon, but her love doesn’t want her. As she walks away, she tells Adele to make the right decision.

Thomas meets with a doctor who is performing autopsies on the dead animals. All thirty six bodies perished within the last twelve hours from drowning. They show no signs of struggle, injury or poisoning. The doctor believes they were running from something and were so scared they chose to drown.

Serge quickly walks through the woods with his rifle. He crouches, takes aim and shoots a deer then pulls out his knife. Cut to Camille, showing Lake Pub patrons pictures of her and Simon. She lies and tells them they are from last summer and he is her 26- year-old ex-boyfriend. As Frederic approaches, she hams it up in attempt to make him jealous. Stepping into her sisters shoes, she joins them in a round of shots.

Jerome enters Lucy’s room to find Alcide keeping watch at her bedside. He tells Alcide that there is still no sign of Lena. He asks Jerome if he knows Lucy then tells him about her miraculous recovery. Her vital organs have healed and her external wounds are almost gone. Jerome receives a call from Claire who still cannot locate Lena. He promises to check The Lake Pub and tells her not to worry. I can’t believe that isn’t the first place they looked, as she practically lives there. After Claire hangs up, she brings Simon and Camille a snack. He lies and tells her Camille is asleep, which is great news since she hasn’t slept since her arrival. They sit and chat while Simon houses the platter Claire prepared. She notes that Camille is always hungry too and asks about his desire to leave. Simon tells her he wants to start a new life with his daughter and wife. She tells him having a daughter is the most wonderful thing in the world.

Back at The Lake Pub, things are getting serious as more shots are brought to the table. Camille takes five additional shots like a champ and Frederic bows out after three. The rules to their game state he must do whatever she asks of him. She begins making out with him until Jerome shows up and ruins the fun. Camille lets it slip that Jerome is her father as he pulls her outside. Frederic stares, stunned as they leave.

Julie sits in her apartment visibly upset. As she opens a window, Laure pulls up. She enters to find Julie sitting in the window. Fearing she is about to kill herself, Laure pleads for her to come back inside and tells her she loves her. Julie comes back in and tells her not to worry she was checking something that she can’t explain. As they argue about Julie’s state if mind, a call comes in that a boy has been located. Julie insists on going with Laure and they both head out.

Simon waiting at the bus station alone as the last bus pulls away. Victor returns to the shelter and Pierre tells him everyone was worried. Victor responds by telling him he was dead and that Pierre was responsible. Pierre insists it wasn’t him and he tried to help Victor and his family. Victor disagrees and once again the town goes dark. Suddenly Pierre’s former partner appears and they begin to struggle. Just then, Julie and Laure arrive to find Pierre startled on the floor. Julie asks what he did to Victor as she embraces him and promises the boy that everything will be alright.

Toni drives in the darkness and he spots Serge in his headlights. He is covered in blood and tells his brother it is from a deer. Toni asks if Lucy was a deer to him as well and then promises Serge he is safe and won’t hurt him again. He pleads for him to let their mother know this as well. Unaware his brother murdered him until now, Serge angrily lifts his rifle but cannot pull the trigger.

Simon confronts Adele at her home and Chloe calls Thomas, as promised. Adele asks why he did what he did. Chloe comes downstairs and tells him to leave. They won’t be going with someone who chose to die instead of being with them. Simon backs away into the darkness and leaves. Thomas spots him outside and as Adele closes the door to her daughter’s bedroom, a shot rings out. Simon is on the ground, shot in the abdomen.

Cut to Camille as she lies in bed. Frederic arrives and they start to fool around. He asks who she really is and she responds that he already knows. She loves him and he loves her and that is all that matters. He realizes it is truly Camille and knocks her to the ground than leaves. She comes downstairs and tells her mother that Frederic knows her true identity. Laure drops Julie and Victor off back at the apartments. As a nurse dresses Lucy’s wounds, she awakens and grabs the nurse’s arm, scaring the crap out of her (and me).
