“Grey’s Anatomy” recap (10.9): Jury’s Out

Here it is folks-the episode we’ve been dreading eagerly anticipating all season. It’s present day. Why wouldn’t it be, you may ask. Well, this episode makes more time jumps than the Tardis, so be forewarned.

Callie is nervously looking for pantyhose. I know the feeling. It once took me two days to take off a pair of Spanx, unassisted. Enough about me though. Callie accidentally knocks over part of the display, which her voiceover reminds us that surgeons shouldn’t do. (Cause accidents-not buy pantyhose.) A helpful clerk comes over and offers her assistance to the clearly frazzled Callie.

The clerk keeps showing Callie all these fancified hose, but Callie is searching for simple nude and begins screaming at the poor woman. She flashes back to a surgery gone awry, and also back to painful memories of Arizona. She catches herself, and apologizes to the clerk, who is on the verge of tears. As the words come out, Callie’s voice over talks about how sometimes being sorry doesn’t matter when what’s done is done. Callie explains to the clerk that she’s under a lot of pressure, and buys all the pantyhose in sight. Even the ones with rhinestones. She leaves the store with enough hose to supply the Rockettes for a year and time flashes back.

Flashback: One Month Earlier

Derek and Callie are all smiles, explaining their new robotic limb project to a group of eager doctors. A man comes in to the room, looking for Callie. She cheerfully introduces herself, and he hands her a subpoena. She’s being sued for negligent malpractice.

Flashback: Four Months Earlier

Cristina and Callie are hanging out near the margarita bar at Meredith’s baby shower. Cristina starts talking about a famous snowboarder named Travis Reed. He had been a patient of Cristina’s back in the day. She replaced his heart valve, and after the surgery he went on to win gold. Travis’s heart is her Mona Lisa, she brags to Callie. Travis, it turns out, needs hip surgery and Cristina has personally recommended Callie.

Arizona comes over to the women, looking for the onesie station, like you do. Once Cristina leaves, Arizona drops the best kind of bomb on her wife: She wants to have another baby. Callie is shocked but delighted. Arizona feels that after such a long, painful year, they should have something joyous in their lives again. Arizona also offers to carry the baby. Callie is so far over the moon, she’s on Jupiter.

Later at the hospital, the doctors meet up with Travis. He picks Cristina up and gives her a friendly dose of flirting before being introduced to Callie. In the consult room, Travis’s agent shows Callie a video of him competing, and he tells her about this new type of replacement called the Peterson Hip. Callie has never performed the surgery before, and is hesitant to agree. He gives her a speech about not being scared of firsts, of being daring. She agrees to research it. If there is one way to sway Callie, it’s to appeal to her hubris.

Present Day

Callie is meeting with her and the hospital’s lawyers. They want her to settle the malpractice suit, but she refuses to admit to any negligence. She asserts that she did not make a mistake with Travis’s surgery and won’t settle because he suffered from a post-op infection. Her lawyer tells her to wear a suit with a skirt to trial the next day, and of course, pantyhose. He notices she’s not wearing her wedding ring and tell her to put it back on because the jury might look on that favorably.

The next day at Callie’s apartment, Arizona shows up to pick up Sofia. Arizona is tentative, but offers to take care of Sofia in case Callie wants to be alone later. Callie is in the middle of getting dressed, in her robe with curlers in her hair. She even looks fucking stunning that way. Arizona seems to agree, and does her best to hide her still lingering desire for Callie as she slips the pantyhose over her thigh. She also notices that Callie is wearing her ring.

In the elevator with her lawyer, Callie nervously plays with her ring. When the doors open, Callie is surrounded by reporters trying to get a comment about the trial. Owen sweeps in and whisks her away from the vultures. Callie takes her seat in the courtroom, and behind her are her colleagues, friends and of course, Arizona. Callie’s scared out of her gourd, and notices a very inconvenient run in her pantyhose. The murmuring crowd is hushed as Travis appears in the courtroom, wheelchair bound. Right then, Callie thinks she’s screwed.

Travis’s lawyer really lays it on thick in his opening statements, doing his best to charm the jury. He tells the jury that Callie was performing a surgery she didn’t understand, and her carelessness cost Travis his legs.

Flashback: Four Months Earlier

Callie, Jo and the OR team are working on Travis as he begins to go into distress on the table. Callie decides to close him up early, but the nurse counting the sponges informs Callie that one is missing. Any extra time that Travis stays in this state could cost him, so Callie makes the decision to close even with the sponge in the joint. The nurse and Jo are hesitant, but ultimately follow her orders.

Present Day

Jo is on the stand, and trying her best to tell the truth without throwing Callie under the bus. (Sorry, George, bad expression.) The prosecutor tries to trip her up, and Jo’s testimony isn’t helping Callie much. She admits that Travis came to them with a post-op infection, but it’s not typical that they result in double amputations.

Flashback: Three Months Earlier (Guestimating this time shift)

Travis comes back in, looking worse for wear. Callie and Jo check his vitals and notice a heart murmur. When checking the incision site, they discover that it’s completely infected and needs immediate surgery. Outside of the room, Callie and Jo discuss the infection, and how they need to clean the joint. The murmur is worrisome and they decide to eventually get Cristina involved since it’s her Mona Lisa after all. Once they get Travis on the table, the damage is worse than they feared. Callie announces that the joint can’t be salvaged.

Present Day

Callie is crying her eyes out in the bathroom while trying to change her ripped pantyhose. She looks so scared and tiny, alone in that bathroom-until Arizona comes in. Knowing there isn’t much she can say to make Callie feel better, she instead pulls out a picture that Sofia drew of some jellyfish like creature and gives it to Callie. She tells her, when she wants to scream to just look at the jellyfish. Callie is surprised that Arizona is there, but Arizona doesn’t say much of anything. She just stands there for support. Callie is getting ready to go back when Arizona notices Callie’s pantyhose are all bedazzled. They both finally laugh together, something they haven’t done in forever. It reminds Callie of when….

Flashback: Three Months Earlier

She and Arizona are laughing, and drunkenly picking out sperm donors. (Is this a new lesbian pastime?) It’s sweet and they are so happy. They have their list narrowed down to a few choice contestants, but the Ivy League poet wins the day. Arizona, a little bleary eyed from the wine, asks Callie if she’ll like being pregnant. Callie lists off the shitty things about it, including no more delicious wine. Arizona woefully bids it adieu. There is so much love in this moment between them that it hurts.

Present Day

Callie is alone, drinking a big, ol’ glass of wine herself. She looks at her wedding ring, and twists it off, leaving it on the counter. The doorbell rings and Callie assumes it’s Arizona but it isn’t. It’s her father. He wraps her in a huge hug, one she desperately needs. They talk about the trial a bit, but soon enough, he wants to see his granddaughter. When Callie explains why she’s not there, and it turns out that Callie never told him about the separation. He’s understandably confused. For Callie, she fought so hard for her parents acceptance, that she didn’t want to have to explain that her marriage was broken. She tells him that Arizona was unfaithful and calls herself pathetic. “Nothing about you is pathetic,” he says, as he comforts her.

Flashback: Three Months Earlier

Callie comes home with pizza in her hand. Sofia is sweetly playing, but Arizona is not in sight. She screams for Callie, and her wife runs to her in the bathroom. Arizona is standing there, thankfully not in peril. She shows Callie a positive pregnancy test and they both smile as bright as the sun. Callie drops to her knees, and welcomes the new addition personally. She then softly kisses Arizona’s expectant tummy.

Flashback: One Month Earlier

The board gathers to discuss the lawsuit, and Callie explains to them that they should settle, even if she won’t. When she leaves, they raise concerns that a trial could bankrupt the hospital. Yang suggests settlement because she thinks that Travis has a strong case. Which leads us to…

Present Day

Cristina is on the stand being questioned by Travis’s lawyer. When asked why she suggested that Callie perform the operation, Cristiana says it’s because she was the best. The use of the past tense “was” causes the prosecution to pounce.

Flashback: Three Months Earlier

Cristiana and Callie are fighting about Travis. His heart is a mess now, and she questions why Callie didn’t come to her sooner. Travis’s leg is grey and needs surgery to supply blood flow. Cristina disagrees and says that the heart is the real priority. Bailey, hearing the arguing, comes in to the room. They decide that Travis could live without his leg, but not his heart. Afterwards, Callie seems pleased with the surgery, and Yang is in agreement until they see Travis in post op. His legs are turning black, as the doctors look on with horror. (I’m no medical professional, but that does not bode well.)

Present day

Callie and her lawyer wait out in the hall discussing strategy, when low and behold, April wheels Richard in to see her. He offers his support, which she is grateful for. First on the stand that day is Travis’s girlfriend. She was there after Travis’s legs were amputated. She tells the jury that she overheard Callie talking about saving her reputation. The jury member shoot Callie unsympathetic looks, while she sits there falling deeper into this hole.

Flashback: Three Months Earlier

Arizona and Callie are looking at houses to accommodate their growing family. Arizona tries to peek through the fence, while Callie’s attention is buried in her cell phone, trying to get some info from the Peterson Hip trials. Arizona lovingly hassles her, and Callie puts the phone away. She tells Arizona that she’s convinced the baby is a little girl, and joins Arizona to do some peeking herself. Arizona stumbles and Callie catches her. Arizona keeps smiling, though, because nothing can ruin this moment of exciting renewal for them.

Present day

It’s time for Travis to take the stand and testify against Callie. His lawyer starts asking him about snowboards, getting Travis to show his expertise. The lawyer asks about first meeting Callie and how it was Travis’s suggestion to try the Peterson joint. He thought he was consulting an expert, and went ahead with the surgery because he trusted her.

Flashback: Three Months Earlier

Travis is recovering from his amputations with his girlfriend by his side. Callie opens the door to his room, and Travis says he doesn’t want to see her. Callie is heartbroken that this has happened to him. She offers them some information on support groups, and he tells her to get out.

Present day

Travis’s questioning continues. He tells the lawyer that losing his legs was the end of his world. Snowboarding was all he ever knew or loved, and now it’s all gone because of Callie. He tells the jury that Callie admitted it was her fault. There is a gasp from the gallery. Callie’s lawyer objects, reasoning that you cannot use a doctor’s apology against them in court. Knowing that Travis’s testimony is pretty damning, his lawyer rests his case. The fact of the matter is, you can’t help but feel for Travis too. He lost so much, through no fault of his own. Sometimes I try to imagine a life where I can no longer sing or write, and it send a chill down my spine. I can’t image the hell this guy is going through.

After that day’s trial, Arizona comes to pick up Sofia and Callie’s dad glares at her. It’s actually quite terrifying. Arizona is naturally uncomfortable, and Callie suggests that she hightail it out of there. When Arizona is gone, Callie thanks him for not saying anything to Arizona, but he is pissed. He questions Arizona’s “good man in a storm baloney.” He assumes that Arizona left Callie, but she corrects him, letting him know that she was the one who did the leaving. He’s turns his frustration to her, questioning why she would break up her family.

The next day on the stand, it’s Callie’s turn to say her peace. She tells the jury that she knew what she was doing, and the original surgery was going well until complications arose. She admits without regret, leaving the sponge in. She knew if they didn’t close up, that Travis would be in danger, and she wasn’t concerned about the effects of the sponge. Her lawyer asks if she was distracted, and Callie’s mind goes to…

Flashback: Three Months Earlier

Callie is scrubbing out, when Arizona comes to find her. Callie accidentally missed the ultrasound appointment, and offers sweet apologies but Arizona’s face tells her something is amiss. There was no heartbeat during the ultrasound. They lost the baby, and they are both heartbroken.

Present Day

Still on the stand, Callie denies being distracted, that she always focuses on her patients. Arizona watches her from the gallery, knowing that it’s not always possible to separate your heart from your head no matter how good of a doctor you are. When her lawyer asks why she didn’t focus on Travis’s heart instead of his hip, she compares it to a grease fire. You have to pick the biggest disaster to put out first.

Flashback: Three Months Earlier

Callie and Arizona are fighting about the miscarriage. Emotions are running high, and Arizona tells Callie that she simply can’t handle another loss. After all they’ve been through, the thought of one more tragedy is too much for Arizona to take. When Callie asks if that means she doesn’t want to try again, Arizona says she doesn’t know. Man, this really puts a lot of things into perspective. Before anyone gets upset, it’s not a justification for cheating, but it certainly does shine a light on Arizona’s inner turmoil. How much tragedy can one person handle? What happens when you hold it all in, and the dam finally breaks? Since Arizona’s dam broke and she’s been patching it up with wads of bubblegum, strips of duct tape, and sex. What the fuck do you do when you can’t figure out how to piece yourself together again? How do you move on?

Afterward, Callie, her own grief surging, finds Travis screaming at his girlfriend. Callie tells her to go spend some time in the lounge. Travis doesn’t want to see her, but she gives it to him straight. She tells him not to take it out on his girlfriend. If he wants to take it out on someone, then she can handle it. She cries and wishes she could magically change what happened to him. She does tell him that she’s sorry, which takes us back to…

Present day

Callie admits to the jury that she apologized but counters that it doesn’t make her negligent, just human. That’s something she’s not about to apologize for.

Meredith and little Bailey accompany Callie back home, where she comes across a letter that had fallen behind a bookcase. It’s from the Peterson people, letting her know they have halted their trials due to numerous infections. The color drains from Callie’s face when she realizes it’s postmarked from before Travis’s surgery. Meredith advises Callie not to show the letter to anyone, knowing that even if it swayed a jury, it could end her career. She warns Callie not to confuse emotion with fact. (Oh Meredith, you are so wise.) Callie’s phone rings; the verdict is in. When she returns to court, all is quiet. The verdict is read and behind Callie, her friends, jump up and cheer. It doesn’t sink in at first, but she’s been found innocent of any negligence.

Back at home, Callie’s dad continues to try and convince her to forgive Arizona. In a moment that shocks her, he admits to cheating on her mother before Callie was even born. Even though she’s angry at him, he goes on to explain that her mother found it in her to forgive him, knowing that their love was stronger than one stupid mistake.

So much had been explained in this episode in terms of Callie and Arizona’s story. Yes, they had found happiness again. Life was going to be OK. Then tragedy stuck and all those scary, bitter feelings roared back for Arizona. She was flailing, and Callie couldn’t see it. Didn’t want to see it. For her part, Arizona did a pretty damn good job at hiding it. So much love lost over miscommunication and grief. Callie decides to take her father’s advice, and finds herself in front of Arizona’s hotel room door. Arizona answers, surprised to find her wife standing there with an open heart.

Callie tells Arizona that she knows she made mistake, but in spite of that, she wants Arizona to come back home. Callie asks her to think about it, then walks away. Arizona closes the door behind her, a million emotions churning inside. She lays herself down on the bed and sighs heavily. She dismissively tells a naked and utterly shaken Leah, to put on her clothes and leave. Just like that.

Even after watching the scene a few times, I’m blown away by the callousness of her words. It’s shockingly cruel. I know that many fans don’t like Leah, but she doesn’t deserve to be treated that way. It speaks volumes about Arizona’s emotional headspace. Is she really someone that Callie can count on anymore? Does Arizona even want to go back home? So many questions, so much to sort though. This drama is far from over, and in the coming weeks, we will most certainly see what all these women-Callie, Arizona and Leah-are made of.
