Morning Brew — “Super Fun Night” isn’t dead yet!

Happy Monday morning, Brewbies! We got some semi-good news about Rebel Wilson‘s Super Fun Night over the weekend: Despite less than stellar ratings, ABC has ordered four more episodes in the hopes that an extra month on air will help the fledgling sitcom find its feet. After a critically bashed pilot and a couple of rocky episodes, the show has struggled to hold viewers’ attention, but as Trish Bendix pointed out in the last recap, it’s getting better and better every week. (And also, we’ve got to believe we’re getting closer and closer to Marika coming out.)

It’s an interesting for gay rights legislation here in the US. The Senate will hold a cloture vote on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA). The legislation, which would place a federal ban on workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation and/or gender identity, is said to be backed by all Democratic senators, and according to Buzzfeed’s Chris Geidner, it has also picked up the five Republican supporters it needs to pass.

Here in the United States, we’re united by a fundamental principle: we’re all created equal and every single American deserves to be treated equally in the eyes of the law. We believe that no matter who you are, if you work hard and play by the rules, you deserve the chance to follow your dreams and pursue your happiness. That’s America’s promise

That’s why, for instance, Americans can’t be fired from their jobs just because of the color of their skin or for being Christian or Jewish or a woman or an individual with a disability. That kind of discrimination has no place in our nation. And yet, right now, in 2013, in many states a person can be fired simply for being lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender.

As a result, millions of LGBT Americans go to work every day fearing that, without any warning, they could lose their jobs – not because of anything they’ve done, but simply because of who they are.

It’s offensive. It’s wrong. And it needs to stop, because in the United States of America, who you are and who you love should never be a fireable offense.

Unfortunately, even if the legislation passes the Senate, it is likely to go nowhere in the House.

On tonight’s Dancing With the Stars, Cher will be taking a seat as a guest judge and she told reporters that she has no idea what the actual heck she’s doing, so her son Chaz Bono has been helping her prepare.

He’s coming tonight to give me tips! He said, “Mom, you don’t understand how seriously people take this. I’m coming over tonight and … I’m going to tutor you.” Obviously, I’m going to need all the help I can get … I was there when Chaz was doing it and saw how difficult it was. I just don’t want to miss some fabulous thing that someone is doing … that would be a big deal, and I wouldn’t even know it.

This beautiful, heartbreaking new short film by AllOut imagines what it would be like if a lesbian figure skater won a gold medal in the upcoming Sochi Olympics but couldn’t celebrate with her partner because of Russia’s anti-gay laws. “What if living your dream meant living a lie?” it asks.

When Batwoman‘s new creative team releases its first issue later this month, it will feature a new Zero Year storyline (“Kate Kane is called home to attend a family funeral. But when an electrical storm creates havoc for the people of Gotham City, an inexperienced Kate can’t deny her duty to protect the innocent!”) and the page count will increase from 32 to 40 and the price will increase to $3.99. All of which is fine with me as long as DC remains true to Kate Kane and her super-heroic lesbian origins.

Congratulations to Maine’s Democratic gubernatorial candidate, Mike Michaud, who came out as a gay man in an editorial in the Portland Press Herald this morning. If elected, he would be the first openly gay person to hold the office of governor.
