“Grey’s Anatomy” recap (10.7): Easy Peasy

I love a good Halloween episode, and this week’s Grey’s Anatomy really fit the bill. A little bit spooky and wacky, yet it stayed true to the current storylines and pushed the characters forward. Also, the episode starts off with naked ladies, lying in bed together. Ok, I know. It was not the naked ladies that many fans wanted to see together, but naked ladies are what we get. Arizona is sleeping the sleep of the recently laid, but Leah is wide awake. She looks over at Arizona with a bit of panic in her eyes. She tries to slip out, but her stirring wakes Arizona. Arizona for her part, doesn’t seem to mind that Leah has spent the night and tells her not to rush off. She offers breakfast, but Leah is already pulling on her pants and tripping over herself to leave. Naked breakfast burritos with Arizona Robbins is not something one turns down, but Leah still declines. See, she’s trying to be “easy peasy lemon squeezy” with Arizona, and not complicate their physical relationship (as much as it’s against Leah’s nature). Sometimes, when our hearts and bodies are so blissed out on someone, we find ourselves twisting and bending to match expectations. The risk of losing it is too great, too unthinkable. It’s not healthy, but it happens. Leah leaves the hotel room, reminding Arizona that today is Halloween.

At the hospital, Meredith is going over Halloween party details. Since the Mer/Der mansion is in the middle of nowhere, she’s convinced Alex to let her host a party for the kids at his house. The only decoration Alex has purchased is a keg, so Meredith now has a shitload to plan. Cristina overhears their conversation and is hurt that she wasn’t invited to the party. Meredith had assumed that Cristina wouldn’t want to attend a baby Halloween party, but Cristina asserts that she loves Mer’s kids. Oh man, this storyline is getting me right in the feels. As a woman without children, who is friends with women who have them, it’s a tough transition for everyone. Cristina’s person, now has two little persons to take care of. Life is different, and always will be now.

Stephanie walks in for her shift, wearing a sweet pair of protective goggles. She’s just had Lasik surgery, and even though she was supposed to take two days off, she’s back. Crusty eyeballs and all. Jackson sweetly encourages her to rest, but she wants to work. Jo tells her that she and Alex are still not talking. C’mon Karev. Your girlfriend is literally Lara Croft. Get it together, man. While they chat, Stephanie slams into a wall. Guess those peepers aren’t quite road ready yet.

Callie, Owen and April are talking costumes at the nurses station. April is the Velveteen Rabbit, which Callie gives a big thumbs down. Slutty bunny, or bust. Callie asks Owen about Emma, and he tells her that Emma put the brakes on their romance. Since he forgot to mention his ex wife to her, she’s not quite sure that he’s ready to date. Owen, thinks perhaps she might be right. Arizona finds Callie to try and coordinate Halloween for Sofia. There has been a little miscommunication (well at least there is some communication) about Sofia’s Halloween costume. Both mommies spent the evening sewing and hot gluing two different costumes. It’s Princess vs Astronaut. It doesn’t take the women too long before they are at each others throats, and when Arizona suggests they let Sofia decide whose effort she loves more, Callie wisely walks away. Not cool Arizona. Don’t be such a Halloweenie.

Now that the cause of Richard’s shoulder pain has been identified, it’s time to have surgery. But who will be the lucky doc? Bailey assumes she will be taking the reigns, but Richard wants a second year to do the honors. He tells her to observe them and pick a winner. Just then, Bailey’s hubby Ben shows up! He loves Halloween, and he didn’t want to miss it with his family. Bailey is too preoccupied with Richard however, and worrying about which second year will end up killing him in the near future.

An ambulance pulls up to the hospital with a man in tow who’s been viciously attacked. Half of his face has been eaten by a guy who’s all tweaked out and thinks he’s a zombie. Zombie Guy is being brought in too. He’s got gunshots to the chest but still snarling and conscious. When Leah attempts to listen to his heart, which is barely audible, he lunges at her and bites her shoulder. Sorry, bite isn’t an apt description. He sinks his teeth into her like an extra on the Walking Dead. She screams in shock and pain. Once they pull Zombie Guy off of her, she has a huge, bloody bite wound. While Leah’s fellow interns tend to her, Bailey orders all sorts of tests to make sure that she hasn’t been infected with any contagions like hepatitis and HIV. If that wasn’t upsetting enough, while cleaning the wound, Stephanie pulls a tooth out of it.

Owen approaches Cristina about operating on Zombie Guy. Apparently, the reason Leah couldn’t detect a steady heartbeat is because his organs are situs inversus. Meaning, his damn heart is on the opposite side of his chest. It’s certainly a treat for Cristina to work on such a rare patient, so she preps for surgery.

Jo and Alex are stuck working together, when a little girl and her businessman father come in. She’s all dressed up for trick or treating, but she’s got abdominal pain so instead, she’s sitting in the emergency room. Alex, who already has a chip on his shoulder regarding fathers, digs into the guy whenever he gets the chance. Jo tells the little patient that they still do trick or treating around the hospital, so not to worry.

Jackson and April are tending to the man who had a bite taken out of his face. As Jackson cleans his wound, the patient starts freaking out that maybe zombies are real. April tries to assure him that is not the case, but he begins to have a stroke.

Stephanie is struggling with her eyesight as she consults with a patient and her adult son. Stephanie misreads her name, which does not inspire confidence in the already terrified woman. The patient has had a leg wound for four months, and when Stephanie removes the dressings, she discovers the wound is crawling with maggots. Let’s all take a moment to barf it out. How does that sort of thing even happen!? I’d Google it, but I’m trying to spare myself more images of wound maggots. Shudder. Stephanie tells Meredith and Callie about it, and when Mer finds out that Stephanie just had eye surgery, she tosses her off the case. Instead of working with patients, Mer suggests that Stephanie go get candy for the party. Also thinking about the evening’s festivities are Ben and Derek. Ben is trying to piece together the perfect costume for Tuck, while Derek works on new ways to insert brain sensors. Ben notices the hack job Derek did sewing Zola’s costume. Turns out, not only is Ben smart and handsome, he can also sew a mean stitch.

Callie and Meredith attempt to help the woman with the….wound situation, but she’s inconsolable about being in the hospital. Her son asks if they can just sedate her and take care of the leg, but as usual, Meredith has a better idea and heads to the gift shop.

Ross is working in triage when he stumbles across an old woman, hacking away and looking for Heather Brooks. Ross’ blood runs cold, as he tells the woman that Brooks is not there. The woman, as creepily as possible, insists that she’s always there. (Insert scary ghost noise here.) Ross asks Bailey for advice, and she tells him not to tell the old lady about Brooks’ passing. When he turns around, the old woman is standing right there. He asks for her name but she insists on waiting for Dr. Brooks.

Owen and Cristina are in the OR with Zombie Guy, and Owen feels like he’s driving in England with all these backwards organs. Cristina, feeling a little lost, tries to talk to Owen about Meredith.

Meredith, genius that she is, comes back with an eye mask for the woman with the leg wound. Meredith starts chatting her up about Halloween to distract her and it works. Callie pops in to assist her. They manage to ease her into an OR to take care of the wound.

Alex is still being a first class ass to Jo, so she finally asks him what his problem is. She tries to talk with him and get something out of him, but he retreats to his jerky ways and blows her off again.

Ben is doing a bang up job on Zola’s wings, and something clicks for Derek as they inspect the costume. Bailey is busy railing about the incompetent second years, and their built in entitlements. Damn Millennials. Richard counters by telling Bailey that he is trying to teach them all to be better doctors, and Bailey won’t let them learn. He then does the unthinkable, and kicks Bailey off his case. She walks away, completely dazed.

In surgery, Callie comments to Meredith that the maggots likely saved the woman’s leg by eating the necrotic tissue. Happy Halloween! Talk turns to the party, which Callie tells Meredith she will not be attending because of Arizona. They do some mommy bonding. (For example: Kids are cute when they are blindfolded and trying to grab apples with their tiny teeth) While in surgery, Meredith gets a call that Richard wants her to oversee his surgery.

In a terrific bit of camera work, Stephanie and Leah lie head to head, eating candy, and stressing about their medical situations. They do their best to comfort each other in their own weird ways, and it’s a real moment of their friendship evolving.

Jackson and April are working on the man with the bitten face, and his carotid artery is damaged. Stephanie keeps sending him misspelled texts, and he send her back words of encouragement. He even has the nurse respond and tell he that she’s beautiful. Meanwhile, April is like, “da fuck”? Jackson is trying to be a better boyfriend, and he’s doing a pretty decent job.

After surgery, Meredith gives Richard an earful about his request. She tells him to find another doctor, but he apologizes for his unkind words a few weeks back. He tells her that he wouldn’t even be alive if it weren’t for Meredith and asks her to help him teach these doctors.

Inspired by the design of Zola’s winged costume, Derek has figured out a better way to attach the sensors. Ben is impressed and asks if Derek regrets taking a step back from surgery. In a word, no.

Alex, who’s had a lifetime of tricks instead of treats (cough Izzie cough), is still stomping around the hospital. Jo tells him that the little girl went to Brazil with her father, and maybe she picked up something there. He yells at her for not telling him sooner. He then yells at the father for not paying attention to his child. The little girl isn’t producing enough adrenaline, and if she’s surprised or frightened, it could send her body into shock. They run off to find her. Ross is looking for his own patient, and runs into Stephanie. He tells her about the old woman and she teases him that perhaps she is a ghost. She lets him know that Brooks did a lot of work with the homeless and uninsured, and the old woman is probably one of those patients. The little girl, who is attempting to trick or treat, and the old woman have a run in down a dark hallway. The little girl is frightened into shock and the old woman collapses. Alex and Jo find them both and rush to save them.

Callie checks on the leg wound woman, making sure she’s comfortable. The woman is doing much better and protests when Callie offers to stay with her. Callie is looking for a way out of dealing with the party and Arizona, but the woman tells her not to miss these little moments in her child’s life. They grown up so fast and before you know it, they will be toilet papering elderly people’s homes, and forgoing the treating to give each other hickeys behind the bleachers.

Cristina is still stressing about the party and processing her friendship with Meredith like only a non-sexual lesbian life partner can. Meredith has asked her to pick up cupcakes, but she dissects the text, wondering if it’s just a backhanded way of telling her not to come. Owen tells her that she’s reading way too much into it.

The father of the little girl is beside himself with worry. He tells Jo that he never would have taken her to Brazil if he’s have know that she could get sick. He promises that he really is a good dad, even if he’s a busy one. Jo assures him that she thinks so too and that while Alex is awesome with kids, he’s kind of terrible with adults.

When Face Bite guy wakes up, he thinks that he’s been quarantined and starts to panic. Jackson doesn’t really know how to react to this, but April gets the patients attention right quick. There are no zombies, or quarantines she tells him. Just crazy assholes that attack people randomly. Nothing supernatural about it, dude. Then she drops the mic. More of this April, please.

In a flurry of activity, Meredith runs into Derek. He’s all excited about the sensor breakthrough. Meredith grabs Ross to assist her with Richard, since he was so knowledgeable in his earlier suggestions for treatment. He tells her that he can’t, because there is something he has to do. Jo saddles up to Meredith at the same time and asks for her advice. That request is like Pavlov’s bell to most women, so they are off.

Bailey finally makes it home after her long and upsetting day, to find her house transformed into a Halloween spectacular. Ben and Tuck are looking totally adorable. Before Bailey can revel in the cuteness, Ben drops a bomb. He’s quitting his residency, because he wants to be with his family full time.

Arizona wanders into the intern locker room looking for Stephanie, but what she finds is a crying Leah. Leah tries to deny it at first, but the tears and red face say it all. When Arizona asks her what’s wrong, Leah blurts out that a psychotic guy who thought he was a zombie bit her and that she’s waiting for her HIV results. Also, she’s fucking terrified. Arizona asks why Leah didn’t tell her, and Leah confesses that she was trying not to complicate things. She’s trying to be easy instead of needy, and it is damn hard. Then finally, we get a glimpse of the Arizona we all love so dearly. The “good man in a storm” Arizona, who isn’t caught up in drama or anger or bullshit. She sits down and tells Leah about the first time she was stuck with a needle, and how frightened she was. She knows the fear that Leah is experiencing right then because she’s been in her shoes. She looks at Leah, like it’s the first time that she is really seeing her and tells her this is not the time to be easy peasy. What exists between Leah and Arizona, isn’t love. It’s not a mad, wondrous thing. But there is affection there. No one is being unfaithful. No one is making a commitment right now. It’s just affection at a time where both women need it, and want it.

Ross goes to check on the old lady and decides to come clean about Brooks. He tells her that Brooks died three months prior, and he knows that she was treating the woman under the table. He gives her medicine for free and says that he will be her doctor from now on. When she asks if he is as good as Brooks, he says no, but one day he will be. With that, Ross lets go of the ghost of Heather Brooks.

Meredith has decided to take Jo with her to Richard’s surgery. Jo asks is she can tell Meredith a secret about Alex and she says no way. She does however tell Jo to stick with Alex while he works through his issues. Meredith has he hands full with babies and surgeries and studies. She doesn’t have time to put Alex back together right now.

Rather than be excited that Ben is coming back to Seattle, Bailey is shocked that he is leaving his residency program. For Ben, it’s too hard to have his heart and his head reside in two different states. Bailey, who loves surgery more than breathing, can’t believe that Ben doesn’t love it as much. Ben tells her that he loves her and Tuck more. He is so happy to be home with his wife and step-son, that it’s all the more heartbreaking when Bailey says the D word. Disappointment. She’s disappointed in him, and he looks like a kid who just had all his candy taken away.

Owen has been thinking about Emma and decides what the hell, and calls her. He leaves her a rambling, inarticulate voicemail about how she’s easy…but not that way….oh shit, then flushes with embarrassment. His face lights up though, when she calls him right back.

Meredith and Jo complete their surgery on Richard, and it’s a success. (Of course) As Richard asks Jo to go through it, detail-by-detail, Meredith slips out to join the party.

The adult party at Joe’s is in full swing, with Stephanie as a sad, sad clown and Leah as some sort of rodeo vixen. Leah is ecstatic because all her tests cam back negative, and she had an energy exchange with Arizona. Stephanie, still can’t see shit. Jackson joins her, and she tells him that she should have taken his advice and not pushed herself. Jackson does the “I told you so” thing, and rubs in that he had wanted to take the day off and take care of his lady, but she was being stubborn. She promises to rest the next day, and he tells her that they should get started right now.

At Alex’s, the party is winding down as Meredith arrives. Everyone had a great time, and Callie and Arizona didn’t kill each other. In fact, for the first time, Callie looks at Arizona without daggers n his eyes. During all the activity, Cristina slips in with a whole bunch of cupcakes. She watches for a moment, all the kids and their parents laughing and playing. The realization that she doesn’t fit in, spreads within her. Cristina leaves the cupcakes and walks back out the door. Meredith sees the treats later on, and realizes that Cristina did show up.

Cristina goes to a place that she knows she fits in. Joe’s. There she meets a handsome stranger, and proclaims herself a sexy witch. Um, yes. She finds an empty seat at the bar, next to Ross. He’s all smiles and swagger and offers to buy her a drink. She hesitates for a moment, then accepts. Bad sharkie, bad! Just because you aren’t wearing any sleeves, doesn’t mean you can flirt with Cristina Yang. She is more woman than you could possibly handle.

At Alex’s, he’s eating all the candy and pretending not to be home. The doorbell rings and he reluctantly answers it. Standing there is Jo, dressed as the most beautiful Tinkerbell that has ever tinked. I started clapping immediately; just to ensure that she didn’t die in some freak porch accident. She asks to talk, and finally, he lets her in.
