Robin Roberts has interviewed some kick ass athletes for her In The Game series on espnW including Lebron James, Abby Wambach, Martina Navratilova, Alex Morgan, and Venus Williams. It was the first time Roberts interviewed two athletes at the same time when she sat down with Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner of the Phoenix Mercury. Take a look.
Brittney Griner is an incredible basketball player, possibly the kind of player that comes around once in a lifetime. But it’s certain that she is an even more incredible, and all too rare, advocate for the LGBT community. From coming out after being picked first in this year’s WNBA draft, to opening up to ESPN the magazine about her struggles growing up (and now) with bullying, to this interview in which she tells Roberts that the most important thing to her is being a leader in the LGBT community. She wants to be the leader who helps stop bullying. In the interview she encourages LGBT kids who are struggling to build a support system and to speak up when they need help.
Because she is so poised, so comfortable in her skin, it is easy to forget that Griner is just twenty-two. She’s just starting what I hope will be a long, successful career in the WNBA. But by taking a stand that others (Michael “Republicans buy sneakers too” Jordan) never did she is creating a legacy that will last long after her playing days are over.
