Morning Brew – Jaime Murray is a Sapphic vampire in “Fright Night 2″

Good morning!

OK, so for Sunday’s VMA Live Tweeting, we’ll use the hashtag #VMAgae. Our brother site typically uses #VMAgay so we’re just going to switch it up with the “AE” on the end. Cool? Please watch with us as we live blog and tweet Sunday night at 9 p.m. EST.

Dreams can come true! Jaime Murray is going gay again in Fright Night 2. She’s also a vampire! A sexy Sapphic professor vampire! The horror film will be on DVD October 1.

Congrats to out Huffington Post business writer Lila Shapiro, who was given the LGBT Journalist of the Year award from the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association. You can follow her on Twitter for links to her latest work.

Some craziness is happening over on Emmerdale where Rhona is “pretending to be in love with Vanessa” to keep her out of trouble. Sigh.

Out Russian journalist/activist Masha Gessen went on the Chris Hayes Show last night to discuss her new campaign called Russia’s Pink Triangle. An excerpt:

…things have gotten significantly worse.  Russia was never a gay paradise.  Same-sex marriage was not on the agenda. But Russia was moving in right direction.  And certainly, in my own experience, I’ve been back in Russia for 20 years and have been out the entire time.  I spent probably the first decade being the only publicly out person in the whole country.  And then, gradually, it just became normalized, as you would expect it would be. … And there were gay bars, there were gay organizations, there are gay publications, gay Web sites in the major cities.  And as you would expect, things were worst in the countryside than in the bigger cities. I’d say, you know, Russia was behind the West in many ways, but it was not moving backwards.  What’s changed is for the last year and a half, it’s been moving backwards and moving back not only toward extreme homophobia, but this hate campaign has caused extreme violence.

Thanks to Masha for speaking out about this when it might not be safe for her and her three children. (She says she’s moving to New York.)

Speaking of Russia, an Australian snowboarder hoping to compete in Sochi has come out. Belle Brockhoff went on Aussie’s ABC TV and said:

“I want to be proud of who I am and be proud of all the work I’ve done to get into the Olympics and not have to deal with this law. I have a feeling that I would have to kinda go back into the closet a little bit because I don’t want to risk my, like, you know, safety, being arrested or deported,” she says. Like many out athletes who are vying for a spot in the competition, she wants “to be able to compete and live my dream and become an Olympian.”

I did Penélope Cruz. I did Sally Field and Temple Grandin. It’s too bad she’s not in the news more. I have that in my back pocket in case she does anything wacky.
