“Grey’s Anatomy” recap: “Run, Baby, Run” (Ep. 9.9)

Bailey and Ben’s wedding day has finally arrived! Welcome to Grey Anatomy‘s “Run, Baby, Run” aka “Run, Bailey, Run.”

Bailey has cold feet about getting married for a second time. Just days before her wedding, Bailey asks Callie, Arizona and Meredith to be her bridesmaids. Well, she actually asks them to “not sit down” at her wedding.

Callie requests clarification from Bailey, “Are you trying to say, ‘Would you do me the honor of being my bridesmaids?'”

Bailey quips, “Does the whole thing have to be about you? Just put on a dress, and don’t sit down.” Oh snap.

Bailey busies herself by bossing April around and pretending that getting married isn’t a big deal. Callie tells Bailey that canceling the ceremony is an option. Callie is only kidding but you can tell she has planted a seed in Bailey’s head. (Inception 2 starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Sara Ramirez? Yes, please!)

Callie and Arizona get their red bridesmaid dresses for the big day but Arizona reveals that she doesn’t want to go to the wedding. It’s a formal event and she feels bad that she can’t wear high heels with her prosthetic leg.

Callie tries to make Arizona feel better by saying, “You are so so beautiful. Yeah, people stand next to you and immediately feel bad about themselves. It’s a public service that you’re a couple inches shorter. It is a kindness to every other woman at that wedding that you are one tiny bit less beautiful.”

Arizona giggles, Callie kisses her on the cheek but you can tell Arizona is still mourning the loss of her leg.

Meanwhile, Neve Campbell has returned as Derek’s sister Lizzie. Lizzie is willing to have nerves removed from both of her legs to help repair Derek’s hand. Derek keeps trying to cancel the surgery to spare his sister from any pain. Lizzie is happy to help but she would like a more intimate relationship with Meredith. Lizzie is hurt that her family wasn’t invited to Derek and Meredith’s wedding and they were sent photos of Zola instead of being invited to meet her in person.

Lizzie tries to talk to Meredith about Lexie but Meredith immediately shuts her down. Being intimate is not something Meredith is used to.

Meredith balks, “My version of family isn’t like yours.”

In the end, Derek and Lizzie’s surgeries are both successful. Now we just have to wait and see how Derek’s hand recovers. To thank her sister-in-law, Meredith decides to open herself up to Lizzie. She shows off her secret sonogram photo to Lizzie, who is delighted at the news of a new child in the family. (I really like Neve Campbell in this role and I hope she stays on for future episodes.)

Meredith still hasn’t told Cristina about her pregnancy and Cristina hasn’t told Meredith that her divorce from Owen will help in their group lawsuit. Meredith can’t figure out why Cristina would keep that information from her.

Derek suggests, “Maybe things are different now.” (You wish, buddy!)

Cristina didn’t tell Meredith about the lawsuit/divorce connection because she didn’t know herself. Cristina confronts Owen, “Was the lawsuit the only reason you asked for a divorce?”

Owen retorts, “You were done a long time ago.”

Cristina responses, “Okay, let me put it another way. I wanted to try again. I was gonna ask you if we could try again, and you said, ‘I want a divorce.'”

With that Owen charges across the room and kisses Cristina. So I guess their divorce is now on pause? (I’m actually happy these two are working it out because I can’t stand Cristina being sad all the time.)

The wedding day has arrived and Bailey is at the hospital working. (Gurl go home and relax!) To help calm Bailey’s anxieties Richard offers to let her scrub in on one of his surgeries. We later find out that Ben asked Richard to drag her into the OR to distract her. (I really like Ben.)

Richard pulls Bailey aside and tells her that it’s ok if she’s nervous on her wedding day. Richard says, “A little bit of doubt is just a sign of an intelligent adult.”

It’s time to zip up the gowns and strap on the bow ties because the wedding is finally here!

Arizona is all dressed up and ready to go. But then she tells Callie that she just can’t do it.

Callie has had enough of Arizona’s moping and declares, “You are exactly the same person you were before just minus a leg. I have been supportive for months. But there comes a point where you have to suck it up and stop whining and start living. Ok, so you have one leg. It’s a wedding. And weddings are sweet and beautiful and no one is going to notice the stupid leg because everyone is going to be looking at Bailey and maybe for one night our lives can be about something other than that damn leg. My whole life is about that leg. I haven’t had sex in five months because of the leg. Enough about the leg!”

Arizona puts on her sparkly flat shoe and sucks it up and goes to the wedding.

Bailey looks beautiful in her wedding dress but the bossy doctor insists on driving herself to the ceremony.

Just then, Richard shows up in a limo and whisks her away to her nuptials. Richard and Bailey have a great moment in the car together. Richard reaches out and holds Bailey’s hand, they sit for a second, but that moment doesn’t last long because Richard gets an emergency call from the hospital. Adele is at Seattle Grace and is throwing up blood. Bailey demands that the driver turn around and take them back to the hospital. (I’m fine with them going to the hospital, but can’t Bailey call Ben from the car and give him a heads up that she’s going to be late?)

The wedding is all ready to go but Bailey is heading in the opposite direction, back to Seattle Grace. Richard is frantic so Bailey tells him she’ll take care of Adele. Bailey takes off her wedding dress and races off with Adele to examine her. Bailey’s family keeps calling her, but her phone just goes to voicemail. The wedding guests are looking around and speculating on the delay. Callie let’s it slip that she might have encouraged Bailey to back out, which, of course, Ben accidentally overhears. (Ben, Bailey is not standing you up, she’s just back at the hospital saving Adele’s life. Love, Bridget)

With that, the show ends and no wedding occurs. At least not this week. We all have to wait until January 10, 2013 for the next new episode of Grey’s Anatomy.

What did you think of the episode? Do you want Owen and Cristina to get back together? Do you think Bailey and Ben will eventually get married? Weren’t Callie and Arizona both stunning in their red bridesmaid dresses?
