In this week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy “Love Turns You Upside Down,” which I have renamed “Intern City,” focuses on all the new cast members and gives our veterans a break. Arizona only has one line, Bailey is seen for a hot second and Callie pops in and out as she focuses on Derek’s upcoming hand surgery.
So let’s discuss what happened with the new members of Grey’s (if you care.)
Cristina has intern Stephanie (played by Jerrika Hinton) and intern Leah (played by Tessa Ferrer) on her service. The interns battle it out for surgeries throughout the entire episode. At one point the two get so competitive they almost kill a patient and get banned from the OR. (Nice work ladies.)
Alex is working with intern Jo (played by Camilla Luddington) who he has nicknamed “Princess.” Jo gets so offended by his condescending tone that she reveals she’s not a princess but instead a foster kid who was homeless during high school and living out of her car. Although the actress really works her sad monologue I’m not buying Jo’s character as the down and out girl. (p.s. Remember when Dr. Izzie Stevens put herself through medical school by being a lingerie model? Random.)
Alex and Jo are caring for a teen mother who doesn’t want her baby. When the young mom (and her mother) try to leave the hospital and abandon her baby, Jo confronts and assaults them. Alex tells Jo to back off and let the police deal with them.
April, who the interns have nicknamed “The Dud” since she didn’t pass her boards, is in a really crappy mood this week. She’s on “lumps and bumps” duty with intern Shane. I’m talking scabs, warts, boils, the whole nasty nine yards of skin issues. Perky Shane is the perfect match for April and in the end brings back April’s smile. (Now these two would make a terrific couple!) April teaches Shane to be warm to his patients and because of that important lesson Callie picks Shane to join in on Derek’s hand surgery.
Shane thanked April and said, “All I ever wanted to be was a surgeon, and now, Torres has chosen me to scrub in on one of the coolest surgeries I’ll ever see because of you. I’m grateful for this job and I’m grateful to you.”
Intern Heather (played by Tina Majorino) is stuck with “Medusa” aka Meredith.
Heather doesn’t get to do any cutting this week because she’s stuck playing secretary, calling Derek’s numerous sisters to see which one is willing to donate a live tendon to their brother. Luckily for Derek, his sister, played by guest-star Neve Campbell, Lizzie comes through.
This episode also has two ailing infants battling it out for a heart transplant, a hunter who thinks he shot Bigfoot (but it’s just a man in camouflage) and no video evidence of anyone getting it on in the on-call room. Let’s just say this was not my favorite episode.
