Fictional lesbian couples we wish we knew

This week, the Huffpost Weddings section came up with a list of “11 [Married] Movie Couples We Wish Were Together In Real Life.” To be honest, the only couple from the list I could stand to be around for more than 5 minutes is Carl & Ellie from Up. And in my version, Ellie is alive and sharing her golden years with Carl in Paradise Falls. But lesbian couples? Another story entirely. Here are seven fictional couples I wish were part of my life. But of course – Bette Porter and Tina Kennard are the ultimate lesbian power couple. I’d love to run into them at the gym or Starbucks, although I might be too intimidated to actually talk to them. Their passion for life would make them a joy to know, even if their passion for each other might make being around them a little awkward from time to time. How could we not want to know Emily Fitch and Naomi Campbell in real life? I actually wish I’d known them from afar before they became a couple, in order to witness the many ways the two tempestuous teens struggled with and overcame the obstacles to their being together. Their story is one of the most romantic ever on screen; we’d love to have it be part of our lives off screen as well. Having a Victorian Silurian at your pool party might raise a few eyebrows, but no more than the couple from the women’s center who believe that shaving your legs is an act of anti-feminist terrorism. Plus, Madame Vastra and human GF Jenny’s sword skills would certainly be convenient when it’s time to make the coleslaw. I know that Paige McCullers is not PLL fandom’s universal choice of GF for Emily Fields, but think about having them as real-world friends? In my scenario, Paige and Emily are older – so the whole inappropriate thoughts about HS girls thing is not an issue – but still swim competitively. Nothing is better than watching an athletic lesbian couple compete – just ask Gro Hammerseng and Katja Nyberg fans who are still mourning their breakup. In my world, Kate Kane and Renee Montoya are still together as the most famous lesbian superhero team ever. I’d love to have them on my speed-dial for when I hear weird noises at night. And having a gay lady couple keeping the bad guys at bay would surely bring silence to homophobic cries that same-sex orientation is responsible for every evil in the world. Recent Buffy marathons have made me miss the pairing of Willow Rosenberg and Tara Maclay more than ever, so they’re at the top of my list of couples I wish I knew in real life. Tara and Willow bring out the very best in each other and I would love to experience their Wiccan charm. Plus, to quote Heather Hogan, Willow and Tara being real “would mean there’s actually magic in the world, which means Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is for real.” I’m a believer. Ellen and Portia DeGeneres are beautiful, endearing, and playful. I hope their relationship in reality is as wonderful as it appears to be in the media, because the coupling is proof that sometimes, real life is even better than fiction.
