TV Alert: “The Women of SNL” lets us relive our favorite funny female moments

It’s no secret that Saturday Night Live hasn’t been at its peak so far this season, but perhaps the show will get a boost from its two-hour special tonight at 9 pm that’s all about the ladies – all of whom have proven all the sexist naysayers wrong about women not being as funny as men. Puh-lease! (For the record, anyone who still thinks like that obviously hasn’t been paying attention to the women on the show all this time, or ever seen the magic that is 30 Rock. Lez Lemon for life!)

Tonight’s The Women of SNL will showcase all the genius female comedians who have been a part of the show over its 35 years. While many of us will obviously be psyched for the current generation of funny women (like our faves Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Kristen Wiig, etc.), there are many more years to be covered.

Before there could be Fey and Poehler, there was Gilda Radner, Laraine Newman and Nora Dunn. And don’t forget Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Molly Shannon, Janeane Garofalo and Joan Cusack. The list goes on and on, especially if you count guest stars. It’s a wonder that they were able to pare this down to only a two-hour special.

There’s a lot of talk about tonight’s special including of vintage clips to pay tribute to the earlier women, but also plenty of new material from current cast members and some of the aforementioned alums (and more). A “mega-parody” of the Real Housewives and an appearance by Fey’s famous Sarah Palin are also expected. Hopefully, Shannon’s Mary Katherine Gallagher (“Sometimes when I get nervous, I put my fingers under my arms and I smell them like this…”) shows up, too.

Below are some promotional interviews with Maya Rudolph and Cheri Oteri:

If you ask me, two hours doesn’t seem like nearly enough time. Who are some of your favorite ladies or female-centric sketches from SNL history?
