Tina Fey talks Emmys, we talk improving “30 Rock”

Nothing lasts forever. Not geopolitical world dominance. Not dinosaurs. Not the Emmy supremacy of 30 Rock. Tina Fey and her follow showrunner Robert Carlock sat down with Deadline Hollywood to talk about the inevitable end to the show’s three-year reign as best comedy.

Tina took the show’s eventual backlash in stride. But not without thinking up a few ways to curry favor among Emmy voters one last time.

DH: Do you worry there may be a backlash coming, that after all of the success you’ve had, voters will finally say, “Enough. Time for a little payback”?

TF: I’m always very aware of the fact it can’t always be our turn, that I’m not always going to be getting a free trip to Los Angeles. But to me, not winning wouldn’t really count as a backlash. If you’d like to see an actual backlash, there are some websites I can direct you to.

DH: You’re saying you never sit at home, gazing into a mirror, thinking, “Wow. I am all that!”?

TF: No one is all that. No one is any of that. With all of the things I have to do during the day, there’s just no time for feeling great about myself and how amazingly charming and witty I am. It also wouldn’t be a good idea to just sit around and navel gaze. But I have to tell you that I have been thinking of ways to drum up new sympathy among Emmy voters.

DH: What have you come up with?

TF: Well, I have this kind of weird rash on my right leg at the moment. And there’s some joint pain, too. Isn’t it about time that a woman with a rash on her leg and pain in her joints wins an Emmy? I don’t think it’s ever happened. I’d be proud to be the first.

Weird rashes and joint pain are good starts. But in a year when both Glee and Modern Family are vying for the top honor (and, let’s be honest, one of them will probably win), I think Tina and company need to consider stepping up their game.

And the single best and biggest thing they could do to ensure 30 Rock’s continued success is to add a gay character. No, wait, hear me out; this isn’t just the normal: “I want everything to be gay!” plaintive wail you always here. This is a real suggestion based on quantifiable evidence and, you know, facts and stuff.

Both Modern Family and Glee have significant gay characters. Fact. Both Modern Family and Glee are incredibly popular. Fact. Both Modern Family and Glee have earned Emmy nominations for their gay characters. Fact. Coincidence? There are no coincidences. Now, I know 30 Rock already has Devon Banks. But he is only an occasional character and, as far as I can tell despite the pictures of a shirtless Barack Obama in his office, not out.

So 30 Rock could add this gay character in a smart and integral way. In the same interview, Tina said she was going to keep incorporating the Kabletown (i.e. Comcast) takeover of NBC into the storyline. Why not make the CEO of Kabletown a lesbian? She would be a significant foil to Jack Donaghy and play off well with Liz Lemon and her bi-curious shoes.

Also, I already have a perfect person for the role: Stephanie March. Think about it, she rose up the ranks at GE and is now in charge of Kabletown. Think of the continuity. Think of the sexy!

You know I’m right about this 30 Rock. Also, it’s a hell of a lot less itchy idea than a leg rash.
