The Weekly Geek: “X-Men: First Class” probably won’t suck

After two amazing films that helped to establish the new order in comic book movies, a baffling awful third installment, and a middling spin-off, the X-Men series needed a serious revamp to be relevant again, let alone retake the crown. Thankfully, it looks like that’s exactly what’s about to happen on Friday, when X-Men: First Class lands in theaters. The buzz is incredibly strong, with incredible reviews and rave remarks by David Bently of the Geek Files, who called it the “best film so far this year” in his review and further elaborated on the winning formula in a later post:

With Bryan Singer, the architect of the X-Men‘s film world, back on board as a producer (alongside Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg) and Matthew Vaughn directing, this new release takes us back to the ’60s in a story that weaves superhero adventure with human drama and real-world historical events.
I am officially stoked. I’ve been wary of this one the entire time it’s been in production – and with the lackluster last couple of films, I dared not hope too much for First Class, but things are looking promising. The only area in which I can’t imagine the new film living up to the previous series is in female casting. The assortment of beautiful, powerful, badass ladies in those flicks: Halle Berry as Storm, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, the inimitable Famke Jannsen as Jean Grey, and even the young Anna Paquin as Rogue – can you name a better (or better looking) band of women? The new generation is going to have to make quite a splash to compete – in my mind, at least.

Which is not to say I’m not entirely open to the idea of the ladies of First Class changing my mind. Change can be a very good thing, especially when it’s wearing spandex and performing superhuman feats. What do you think, geeks? Will you be attending opening weekend, or holding off for another superhero escapade later this summer?
