The Weekly Geek: “The HappyTime Murders” are on the way

How does this sound: an R-rated movie starring the Muppets? Stay with me here. I’m not saying Avenue Q, but actual Jim Henson Company designed puppets, in a comedy murder mystery aimed at adults. Doesn’t that sound fantastic?

According to The Mary Sue and The Hollywood Reporter, it’s in the works. The Happytime Murders is finally in pre-production (even though it was reportedly announced way back in 2008).

The official description:

In a world where puppets co-exist with humans as second class citizens, puppet private eye and disgraced ex-cop, Phil Phillips, is hot on the trail of the serial killer who murdered his brother and is now targeting the cast members of the famous ’80s television show, The Happytime Gang. As the killings continue, Phil’s former flame, Jenny, is next on the list. It’s up to Phil and his ex-partner, Detective Edwards, to find the culprit, but as bad blood and old resentments resurface the clues start pointing to the only viable suspect, Phil himself. Now he’s on the run with only his wits and hardheaded determination, as he tries to solve, The Happytime Murders.

OK, aside from hearing “movie announcer voice” on that first sentence, I’m completely stoked. Sitting alongside the official synopsis is a hilarious piece of concept art, featuring a hard-boiled detective puppet, an unlucky-looking murder victim with his “stuffing” all over the floor, and a bunch of humans milling about. That’s comedy gold right there, and its only just concept art!

Brian Henson will direct the film and Katherine Heigl’s name has been attached to the project. The intrigue!

You could make a movie about dysentery prevention starring the Muppets (even “unofficial” Muppets from the studio) and I’d still watch it, so I’m clearly excited for this project to see the light of day. The Muppets has only just reawaken my childhood love of the hilariously off-kilter creatures, and I strongly suspect I’m not the only one.
