The Weekly Geek: “Star Trek: Into Darkness” trailer

Trekkies, we’ve waited a long, long time, but now it’s finally here: the official teaser trailer for the sequel to 2009’s awesome Star Trek reboot, Star Trek: Into Darkness. And it does not disappoint. It’s about one minute of pure action — brooding music, explosions, flashes of our new favorite characters in harrowing circumstances, basically, the goods.

How’s this for dark: “You think your world is safe. It is an illusion. A comforting lie told to protect you,” intones the dark voiceover, presumably from Trek newcomer and Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch. “Enjoy these final moments of peace. For I have returned to have my vengeance.”

And of course, the official description, courtesy of the iTunes trailer page:

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

The movie is due out next May (the 17th, to be precise). Raise your hand if you’ll be in line on day one in a Starfleet uniform (or Klingon regalia).

I’m hoping for more classic Trek goodness — action, humor, and smart underlying themes wrapped up in a tasty, sexy package. The wait through the winter will be long!
