The Weekly Geek: iPad 2 and the 3DS tease your gadget lust

It’s been one hell of a week for gadget lovers, especially anyone with a case of Apple technolust. Just yesterday, the company unveiled the drool-worthy iPad 2, a faster, sexier, apparently more battery-savvy version of the iconic tablet. It has two cameras, comes in two monochromatic colors (I’m apparently not the only one who has missed the funky black laptops of the mid ‘aughts), and boasts a speedy dual-core processor.

Check out the rest of the specs from TUAW:

The iPad 2 is 33 percent thinner than the current model and weighs 1.3 pounds, and is even thinner than the iPhone 4: The iPhone 4 is 9.3 mm thick while the iPad 2 is 8.8 mm thick. It will be available in both white and black, with the white model available on day one (avoiding the fiasco that surrounded the while iPhone 4). There will be models that work with both AT&T and Verizon. The iPad 2 will also have HDMI mirrored video output up to 1080p through a $39 accessory.

The price on the iPad 2 is the exact same pricing model as used for the original iPads starting out at $499 for a 16 GB WiFi-only version and topping out at $829 for a 64 GB model with both WiFi and 3G.

The old (well, older) version of the iPad will drop to $399 (or $349 for a refurbished unit), for the base model, so if you’re unsure about all the fuss and you still want an awesome tablet, knock yourself out.

I was within inches of buying one of these last spring, though I eventually opted for a basic 13″ macbook instead. Better for writing, you see. However, I’m pretty excited about the new specs, since my primary reason for nabbing an iPad would be for gaming. Perhaps I should just wait a year for the next awesome model/price drop announcement?

In any event, launch day for this puppy is right around the corner: March 11. Start lining up at your local Apple store now for first dibs!

In other exciting-handheld-hardware news, Nintendo’s 3D gaming device, the 3DS, just launched in Japan, and rabid gamers are anxiously awaiting the US release. Basically, it’s a higher-powered DS system, with adjustable 3D effects, two cameras, and augmented reality games right out of the box.

Geeks, what are you saving your pennies for this spring? Is the new iPad worth trashing last year’s favorite toy over?
