Ask me what my favorite TV series of all time is, and you may get an answer you’re not expecting. As much as I love all the Star Treks — especially the pro-fem, lesbian subtexty Voyager — as much as Battlestar Galactica gave me sweet dreams of military-space action, or Firefly ignited my imagination, the answer has always been (and likely always will be) Farscape.
Never heard of it? I wouldn’t be too surprised — it was a weird and wonderful adult-oriented Jim Henson production that ran from 1999 to the early ‘aughts. It was dark, deeply funny, wildly creative, with plotlines that constantly took old sci-fi tropes and turned them on their heads; and it starred characters that, despite the fact that almost none were actually “human,” were the most fascinating, well-realized bunch I’ve ever seen in “genre” fiction. It was a feminist-and-queer friendly fever dream and a love story, and I can’t overstate how awesome, empowered and totally sexy the female leads were.
You get the idea. So when I09 recently reported that Farscape creator Rockne S. O’Bannon is working on a new project for Syfy, I sat up and took notice. He’s been working on the Farscape spin-off comics for the past couple of years, so its not like he’s been off the space-radar, but this could be a return to form for a guy with serious TV sci-fi talent.
It all came from a tweet from the man himself on April 16:
Great meeting at Syfy yesterday. New project. HUGE. New series. Very excited. Very, very excited.
And the good folks at I09 are speculating that this could be the Alien Nation reboot that’s been in the works for some time:
…with Stargate gone there is a distinct lack of alien interaction on Syfy. And O’Bannon knows aliens. We suspect Syfy is dreaming up a new alien-centric series. Or perhaps, dusting off the Alien Nation reboot they’ve been kicking around for a few years.
I’ll be keeping my eyes and ears open for more news. Until then, get ready for aliens – of some kind or another.
