The three-dimensional women of “Watchmen”

At the end of a week in which a total eclipse of gay marriage rights darkened the “bright new day in America,” I need inspiration. Fortunately, the release of a new Watchmen feature about the women of Watchmen provides exactly that.

Before I show you the clip, though, I have to acknowledge that Watchmen has some aspects that are quite disturbing. An attempted rape, which will be shown in the movie, is pivotal to the character development of Sally Jupiter/Silk Spectre (Carla Gugino) and her relationship with her daughter, Laurie Juspeczyk/Silk Spectre II (Malin Akerman).

Faithfully adapting the comic to the screen pretty much requires that the scene be shown, but I have to say, it gives me serious pause, as it did Gugino.

“It was really brutal. It was brutal to shoot,” Gugino said of the scene. “That was one of the things [Director] Zach [Snyder] said to me from the start: ‘I want this to be incredibly brutal. It’s not a turn-on kind of story. It’s bad.’ It’s important to me that we did that. I think hopefully it was really powerful.”

For now, though, let’s put context aside and enjoy the women. Sometimes, we just have to.

Are you a Watchmen fan? How do you feel about the brutality of this movie? Will you see it?
