“The Sarah Silverman Program” goes to the great poop joke repository in the sky

Love her or hate her, Sarah Silverman was for a time one of the hottest female comic in the land. Which makes news of the quiet cancelation of her show, The Sarah Silverman Program, all the more perplexing. The series aired three seasons on Comedy Central (its last season aired as a partnership with Logo.)

Now, Sarah’s brand of brash, often potty mouthed humor wasn’t for everyone. When her show first came on the scene in 2007 it seemed the whole world was her poop joke. The series earned Sarah a lead actress Emmy nomination last year and instant name recognition (well, it helped too that she was “F——g Matt Damon.”)

But the writing was on the wall during the show’s recent 10-episode third season when Comedy Central moved its timeslot from 10:30 p.m. to midnight. So what, exactly, went wrong? I’m not really sure. But I sure hope Sarah finds a new outlet for her talent. In fact, she already has.

Last month, Sarah released her first book, The Bedwetter: Stories of Courage, Redemption, and Pee. In an exclusive letter to readers on Amazon.com, Sarah explains her rationale for writing the book in her typical, unfiltered style, saying:

I was once primarily known for saying the word “poop” and getting paid above market rates for it. But those days are over, because I am now going to be known for having written a book. Why did I write a book, you might wonder? Because it just seemed like the right time to be getting into the publishing industry.

I’m kidding. Publishing is rotting like an abandoned possum carcass on the shoulder of I-95. I know that for a fact, because shortly after my book deal was announced, I kept hearing people lament the imminent demise of literature.

She also recorded a video introduction to the book on her blog:

So, will you miss The Sarah Silverman Program? What do you want Sarah to do next? And, most important, who will fill the poop joke void on TV now that she is gone?
