“The Romantics” reminds us Katie Holmes can act

I miss Joey Potter Katie Holmes.

Oh, I know she hasn’t gone anywhere; not really. She shows up from time to time in commercials or TV shows or at charity events.

But her recent onscreen career, especially on film, has been about as memorable as Ali Larter on Dawson’s Creek. (Oh, Pacey; you’re such a little doll.)

If the trailer for The Romantics is any indication, however, Katie may have found a winner at last. And I’m not talking about Tom, although, ironically, she has the hots for an ex named Tom in the movie.

The Romantics premiered at Sundance and then played at Cannes, where it got positive reviews. The plot is not all that original — a group of seven close friends get together for a wedding, in which Holmes’ character Laura is maid of honor for Lila (Anna Paquin). She also is the ex of the groom Tom (Josh Duhamel).

Here’s the trailer:

The cast is kind of awesome — Candice Bergen, Dianna Agron, Adam Brody and Elijah Wood join Holmes, Paquin and Duhamel. (I’m not sure I’ll be able to look at Paquin without hearing, “SOOKEH!” but she is, after all, an Oscar-winning actress.)

From what I’ve read, though, this is Holmes’ movie. Some reviewers even predict that The Romantics is Katie’s Rachel Getting Married. And I, for one, am ready to see the Katie Holmes talent I saw in Pieces of April.

Besides, I’m a sucker for a good rom-com — even if it’s straight.

The Romantics will be released September 10. Do you want to see it?
