“The Returned” recap (1.2): Making Peace with Our Ghosts

We start this episode back at The Lake Pub 10 years in the past and a day before Simon and Adele’s wedding. Simon is onstage playing bass in his band while Adele waits tables. At the end of their set, some kid, who has no respect for other people’s property, starts playing with the drum set. It turns out to be Lena, who is yelled at by her father Jerome as her sister Camille plays pinball next to him. Simon starts teaching Lena how to play the drums while Adele smiles and takes a Polaroid photo of him. Racking up the points, Simon, someone’s getting laid tonight.

Cut to Simon and Adele in bed the next morning, she complains about not getting any sleep that night. Guess I was right. She insists Simon must leave because it’s bad luck for him to see her in her dress. Before he goes she tells him she has a secret, but it must wait until tonight. He jokingly asks her if she is pregnant and she smiles. So that means the child in the future he mentally scars by repeatedly knocking on the door while yelling is his daughter. Later that day, it appears that Adele has been left at the altar. Police arrive at the church, including Adele’s future beau, and deliver bad news to the priest as she watches.

Back to current day, Adele’s boyfriend and young daughter, Thomas and Chloe, discuss her mental state at the breakfast table. Chloe asks if it is going to be as bad as the last time and Thomas assures her that her mother will be fine.

Meanwhile, Simon stops at an oddly American-looking diner and tries to buy food with the change in his pocket. After getting a rude response from an employee dressed in Western gear, Simon responds the way that any sane person would. By smashing him in the head with a glass mug, then kicking him over and over. Personally, I think the guy deserved it. He was wearing a bolo tie. Simon stops only when he notices Mr. Costa’s wife sitting in a booth casually eating fries. He flees, unaware that the whole thing has been caught on tape.

Lena opens the bathroom door and sees Camille staring at herself in the mirror. As Lena turns to quickly leave, Camille asks her if she frightened of her. Lena says no but pulls away when Camille tries to hug her.

Julie peruses the missing children board at the local police station as she waits to be helped. A detective and the man Simon beat the crap out of pass her in the hall. When he returns she asks if there have been any missing reports on a child fitting Victor’s description. When questioned why, she lies and says she saw him from the bus on her way home. Even though the detective can tell she is holding back, he chastises her for not coming in earlier then leads her into the station to file a report.

As everyone sits at the breakfast table, Lena comes down and angrily lights a cigarette. She asks if the plan is to pretend that everything is normal and questions if this is even Camille. Jerome yells at her and she leaves. He follows and Lena tells him she cannot accept the fact that her sister has been “resurrected.” He insists that Camille needs her right now. Lena responds by saying she has no sister, her sister died. Ouch…cold. Why can’t you love your zombie sister, Lena?

Back at Julie’s, Simon approaches her and asks if she knows anything about the former tenant, Adele. After telling him she moved in eight or nine years ago and that she knows nothing about her, she shuts the door in his face. She doesn’t have time for his antics now that she is a surrogate parent for a creepy kid. She finds Victor in the kitchen and insists he must speak to her. She tells him that she went to the police station and no one is looking for him. He says nothing and hugs her. Julie tells him that she cannot keep him, and once again he says nothing then eats a cracker. Never has something so innocuous weirded me out so much.

Thomas receives a call while planning an event at church with Adele and Chloe. Lucy’s has been found stabbed a dozen times in the abdomen. The attack matches a serial killer who went dormant, but has seemed to return to his old tricks. Thomas leaves and Chloe uses the bathroom in the church. As she goes to wash her hands, the sink gurgles and backs up with muddy water. Cut to the dam workers who discuss the water level which is continuing to drop.

Camille enters Lena’s room. She checks out all the photos that are plastered on her walls, and sees a life she missed out on within the past four years. Claire then goes upstairs to find Lena’s room trashed. Furniture is broken and her stuff is thrown everywhere. She knocks on Camille’s door to ask if she’s been in her sister’s room. Camille says she has been trying to sleep and shuts the door.

As Julie leaves her apartment with Victor out comes Miss Nosy to ambush them. She asks if she has heard about Mr. Costa. When Julie says no, she gleefully tells her how he jumped from the dam. Meanwhile back at the church, Adele tells the pastor how she has seen Simon and how real it felt. The pastor tells her it is not strange for her to think of him when it is so close to her wedding day with Thomas. He then tells her that it is important for us to be at peace with our ghosts and if Simon returns she should speak to him.

As Lena drinks her troubles away at The Lake Pub, Simon approaches her and asks about the library where Adele works. She shares the location and he takes off. Lena’s friend asks her what Simon wanted. She tells him that he wanted to sleep with her but she turned him down because he wasn’t her type.

Camille comes downstairs to find her mother speaking with Pierre. She tells him she has not yet slept and snidely asks the “doctor” for an explanation. She begins to go out and Pierre tells her it’s a bad idea to be seen in public since she is supposed to be dead and all. She yells at him and asks him if she’s a zombie. He tells her she is special and blessed. That he saw her in her coffin and now she is here and has been granted a new existence. She asks why her out of the forty that perished and then wishes just to be normal like before.

Police arrive at The Lake Pub to bring Toni, the owner, down to the station. They have some questions about Lucy. Lena asks one of the police officers, Alcide, what’s going on and he refuses to tell her. As she walks to follow them to the exit, she notices the picture of her and Simon when she was a child.

As Simon enters the library, security notifies the police that their suspect in the bolo tie beating has been located. Adele notices him and approaches what she thinks is an apparition. She tells him that even though she’s marrying another she still has a spot for him in her heart. She is glad he’s back even if it is only in her head. As she goes to touch him, a gaggle of children enter screaming. When she turns back he has disappeared like a ghost or like a man currently being arrested outside.

During what seems like the busiest day for the police station, Toni is being questioned by Thomas and Laure, Thomas’s second in command. He has been brought in due to the fact that he was a suspect in the original case. Toni reminds them he was cleared and claims his innocence. Laure loses it on him, calls him sick and asks him how he can actually bite and eat his victims’ pieces of his victims. She shoves the pictures of Lucy in his face and tells him he is lucky she is still alive. Meanwhile, Lucy’s real attacker approaches a farm house. Much to his confusion he sees that the door is padlocked. He breaks in and calls out for his mother.

Back at the good ol’ Lake Pub, Lena asks her friend if he thinks people can come back from the dead. He tells her probably not, which is best because we would be in trouble. This causes Lena to angrily storm off. I wonder what that is all about. Hmmmm. The other twin, Camille, makes her way to the window to see Claire and Pierre lovingly embrace outside. She leaves the house unnoticed and walks into town.

At Julie’s, Victor is being strange again. What a surprise. As Julie finishes a phone call she turns to see Victor sitting in an open window. He smiles and jumps out. Julie goes out the sliding glass door to find him, only to turn and see him back inside, smiling behind the glass door. I think it is time to call child services.

Toni arrives at the farmhouse to find the padlock broken. He enters and sees butchered animal parts on the table and a wolf carcass strung up from the ceiling. As he continues his search for the intruder, he hears a noise from the room he just left. Holy hell! The wolf came back to life and he isn’t happy. Toni reaches for a shotgun but the wolf is too quick. After a battle on the floor, Toni finally reaches the gun and blows the wolf away. He digs a hole outside to bury the creature. Probably a good idea since it already “woke up” once today. Lucy’s attacker approaches him from behind. Toni turns, stares at him in disbelief and then brains him with a shovel. Toni runs to the farmhouse and holds the door shut as Lucy’s attacker staggers to his feet and runs after him. He screams at the door, “Why did you hit me? It is ME!” Toni prays, hoping God will save him from the monster outside and the banging stops. He opens the door and assesses the situation, only to be hit with the same shovel.

Jerome runs into his former home and asks Claire how long has Camille been missing. She tells him about an hour and that she can’t get a hold of Lena. Camille arrives behind The Lake Pub and climbs up to a window to look in. She is caught by Lena’s friend who offers to help her get in and runs off in fear that he will recognize her. Lena returns home and her parents immediately ask her if she has seen Camille. She has not and worries her sister will be seen.

Laure informs Thomas that the man who attacked the diner employee is supposed to be dead. When she tells him it is Simon, Thomas goes completely pale and grabs the files. She asks if the name sounds familiar and he lies and says no. They both go to where Simon is being detained and Laure asks Simon to explain why he is listed as dead. Thomas asks if he knows Adele. Simon confirms that he does and asks who Thomas is to her. Thomas tells Laure to read him his rights as he walks away. With a confused look, she sits to begin to process Simon into the system.

Toni wakes from his shovel induced nap to find the killer with a shotgun to his face and a lot of questions. He asks where their Mom is and Toni informs him she died three years ago. His brother, Serge, asks why he doesn’t remember her dying. Toni tells him because you died with her. Thomas returns home and pretends he just didn’t have a conversation with his fiancĂ©’s dead fiancĂ©. Camille returns home as well. She looks through the window to see her family waiting up for her. They run to the door to tell her how worried they had been. Camille asks them what could happen, she is already dead. She then tells them she went to The Lake Pub to see Frederic but bumped into Lucho instead. Cut to Thomas hurriedly looking through Adele’s old photos. He finds a picture of Simon and stares at it in horror. As Camille tries to sleep, Lena comes to her door. She tells Camille about Simon and how she thinks he is like her, dead.

As the show comes to a close, Simon sits in jail and devours a sandwich. The police ask him if he is sure that there is no one they can contact for him and to let them know if he changes his mind. Toni holds Serge while he cries. Julie brings Victor milk as he lays awake on the couch. She promises to look after him and lovingly rubs his head. Bad idea, get rid of that kid before you wake up with him standing over you smiling with a kitchen knife. And it seems like she may have had a bad past already before dealing with Victor. Julie goes to take a shower and removes her shirt to reveal multiple scars on her abdomen. I guess she has met our buddy Serge.

I can’t wait until next week to gaze at Victor’s lovely smile and see who Serge decides to dine upon.
