The return of “Kate & Allie”

A reader (all hail thelinster) passed along the best news I’ve had all year: Kate & Allie is coming to WE (that’s the Women’s Entertainment network). On Saturday, June 2, you can indulge in a marathon from noon to 9:00 p.m. ET — that’s right, a marathon. I haven’t seen Susan Saint James in years, and now I get to behold her for nine hours!? After that, the show will air weeknights at 7:00 and 7:30.

Kate & Allie, which ran from 1984 to 1989, is definitely lesbianish. Jane Curtin and Susan Saint James play divorced moms who move in together to share the burdens of child-rearing and the single life. It’s funny, it’s sweet and it’s good-looking. And Saint James’ voice is swoon-inducing. Yes, as an adolescent, I dreamed about this show, just like I dreamed about Laverne & Shirley when I was a wee gay. (Sadly, I still can’t find any clips of Kate & Allie online. Let us know if you’ve come across some.)

Sometimes I think the ampersand is really a gay symbol. I mean, Kate & Allie, Laverne & Shirley and Cagney & Lacey? Hmmm.

In the process of reveling in this news, I discovered that Alice is also running on TV again, if you get the ION channel. I can promise you that I will be singing the theme song all day.
