“The Good Wife” recap (6.1): The Most Popular Name in Chicago

Oh dear readers, it’s difficult to put into words how I’ve missed The Good Wife while it’s been on hiatus. Alicia Florrick and her fierce determination, Diane Lockhart’s collection of stylish eyeglass chains, that one expression that Cary makes, Kalinda’s leather jackets, Eli’s endless machinations. It’s actually right there, that we pick up this season. Eli is having a flash of an idea, while staring into the glorious visage of Alicia Florrick as Puccini‘s “O Mio, Babbino Caro” soars in the background. When Eli asks her to run for State’s Attorney, she quickly shoots him down, wine glass in hand. When Eli pushes, Alicia utters the phrase that I’m sure she may rescind later in the season: “I’m never saying yes.”

Their conversation is interrupted by a phone call from Cary, who isn’t on board with Diane Lockhart joining Florrick Agos. He does however agree to a breakfast meeting. He then calls Kalinda to apologize for their less than ideal parting. She’s at a bar and he asks her to wait and meet up with him. Unfortunately for Cary, he’s not going to make that meeting because he is promptly arrested by two very angry cops, with guns drawn.

Kalinda gets another call while she waits at the bar, but this time, it’s a voice from her past. It’s as if all the times lesbians uttered into the wind, “God, I wish they’d bring Kelli Giddish back”, floated off, gathered strength in numbers and magically came true! There she is, well, the private investigator Sophia I mean. She’s calling to tell Kalinda she’s lonely and horny, but Kalinda isn’t in the mood to listen to gorgeous blondes prattle on about how much they desire her. She tells Sophia that’s too damn bad, plus she’s already meeting someone. However, when Cary doesn’t show up or pick up his phone (since he’s in the back of a cop car) she decides to call Sophia back.

At the station, Cary is handcuffed to a wall for six hours and not allowed to make a call. He still has no idea why he’s even there. Now that it’s morning, Alicia and Diane sit at their breakfast meeting, with no Cary. Diane wants to join the firm and bring her forty-five lucrative clients, but she has some stipulations. She wants an equal vote and to bring Kalinda along. Diane points out that Florrick Agos Lockhart would be the largest firm run by women in the country. This makes Alicia take pause at the sheer awesomeness of this possibility. Alicia asks her to wait until she can talk to Cary about these requests, then angrily leaves him another voicemail. When Alicia arrives at the office, it’s evident that Cary isn’t avoiding her. No one, not even Robyn knows where he is. Alicia spies Cary’s car still outside and a look of worry crosses her face.

Meanwhile, Cary’s drunken benchmate whispers that he overheard the cops talking about why Cary is being locked up. Drugs. Cary is baffled, then quickly escorted into a large, dark waiting area full of arrestees. There he spies the son of a client and hatches a plan to get word to someone that he needs help. When David Lee and Kalinda show up to represent the client’s son, he manages to tell them about Cary being in lockup.

Kalinda gets ahold of Alicia, who calls Finn Polmar for help while rushing down to the courtroom. Strangely enough, Finn is the ASA in charge of prosecuting Cary. At first Alicia laughs it off, with five hundred bucks in her purse for Cary’s bail. This isn’t some minor possession charge though. Cary is being charged with a felony drug crime with the minimum sentence of 15 years in jail. What?! She’s shocked. We’re shocked. Everyone is shocked! Cary is accused of moving and selling drugs and bail is set at a whopping 1.3 million. Alicia and Cary are blindsided. Cary knows it must have to do with Lemond Bishop. Alicia calls Robyn to help her raise the bail. Eli buzzes in on her call waiting, wanting to poll her approval ratings. In true Alicia fashion, she hangs up on him.

Eli decides to run a poll, with or without Alicia’s permission, because he’s Eli. His spunky daughter Marissa is in town. Eli points out Lauren, the intern that crushes on Peter is still freaking him out, so Marissa casually mentions that word is, Lauren goes commando at the office. Not really sure why this is important Eli, but it all adds up to a mess in Eli’s already frantic bid to keep Peter out of trouble. Speaking of Peter, he is less than thrilled to find out that Eli has been thinking of Alicia for State’s Attorney. As far as Eli is concerned, Alicia is the only one who could truly keep the skeletons hidden.

On her way back to the office, Alicia sets up a meeting with Lemond Bishop. She assures him that Cary being in jail will not affect their attorney client privilege. Bishop knows they are using Cary to get to him, but Alicia makes it clear that Cary wouldn’t turn on him. While she says this as Bishop’s lawyer, she’s actually trying to protect Cary from any retaliation.

At the prison, Cary is about to get stripped searched when he’s called to the visiting area. Kalinda has come to see him, and offer to help. Cary did indeed meet with Bishop on the date in questions, May 25th. While at Bishop’s home, there were a couple of Bishop’s men hanging around as well. Cary is being accused of advising them how to evade arrest. As he’s led away, she advises him to make a friend and fast.

At Lockhart Gardner, Diane coyly tells David and Louis that she plans to retire. They don’t believe a word of it. Back at Florrick Agos, Alicia has her hands full meeting with Diane’s clients and trying to convince the partners to come up with Cary’s bail. She is met with resistance on both fronts.

Cary is put in GenPop where he takes Kalinda’s advice and makes a friend; another inmate who is looking for legal advice. After Kalinda leaves the courthouse, she tries to chat up one of Bishop’s men who Cary remembers speaking with that day. Bishop shows up and warns her to back off. Kalinda has been on Bishop’s radar before, and it’s not a pleasant place to be.

Eli’s poll numbers have come in courtesy of guest star Samantha Morton, playing Bonita the Pollster. Of course, Alicia would crush the competition. Eli’s mind starts racing as to how he can convince Alicia to put aside all her ideals and run. Lauren the Intern stops in, and it turns out that Eli has created a PantyGate situation, but no one wants to actually be the one to ask. So of course, Marissa walks right up to Lauren and asks if she’s wearing underwear. Lauren glares at Eli and pulls up her skirt right there in the middle of the office. Eli is skating on some thin ice here.

Alicia calls Cary’s wealthy father to try and scare up some bail money, but Daddy Dearest only offers a measly eight grand. Robyn, being that darling rockstar that she is, is actually ponying up her own twenty-five grand of her own money. Alicia makes a call so see if she can take a second mortgage out on the condo. She has to cut the call short however and run to court. Finn has asked that Alicia be disqualified from representing Cary due to conflict of interest and he wins. She stops him on the way out, and asks if his zealousness has to do with his sister’s drug past. He ices at her remark, and they awkwardly express hope that this situation won’t come between them as friends.

Now with Cary sans an attorney, Alicia asks Diane to step in. Diane is at first concerned about her reputation if she joins a law firm with a felon as a head partner, but she agrees nonetheless. Louis and David watch Alicia and Diane’s conversation from across the office, like a couple of hungry buzzards.

Kalinda meets up with Sophia on the street, who then brazenly smooches her. Kalinda is pissed because she’s figured out that Sophia knew what was going to happen with Cary that night. Yes, that may be true, but Sophia was also trying to protect Kalinda from getting picked up as well. Kalinda asks who the informant is, but Sophia isn’t talking.

Cary has helped his new friend by advising him on his case, and but when the inmate returns from his “hearing” he whips out a shiv. Bishop sent him to befriend Cary and see if he’d have loose lips. Also, Bishop ordered him to cut off one of Cary’s fingers. Cary remains in total shock through all of this, staring at the makeshift weapon. The inmate knows Cary is cool, so instead of cutting off a finger, he slashes his hand instead. When Alicia and Diane show up to fill him in of the bail situation, he lies as he was instructed, and says he cut his hand on the bars.

As part of his ingenious plan, Eli calls the current State’s Attorney Castro, and tells him that Peter wants to endorse him. Eli then brings Peter in to hear directly from the pollster Bonita. It’s very clear that Alicia could beat Castro. Alicia Florrick is currently the “most popular name in Chicago” according to the polling. Eli tells Peter about Pantygate because he’s still mad he can’t fire Lauren the Intern. Peter is nonplussed about the whole ordeal. Eli mentions that keeping Alicia on board, offers protection for Peter. He then lies to Peter and says Castro wants to meet with him.

Bishop shows up at the Florrick Agos, and sends in one of his legit business guys who offers to pay Cary’s bail. He literally drops off a bag full of money. Bishop calmly informs Alicia that he has nothing to do with it.

When Peter and Castro meet, they are both confused as to who called the meeting and immediately start fighting. Castro leaves in a huff, which is exactly what Eli wanted. Now Peter has changed his tune about Alicia. You are such a brilliant son of a bitch, Eli.

Sophia shows up at Lockhart Gardner and after their requisite flirting, Kalinda gets down to business. When Sophia won’t tell Kalinda who the CI is, Kalinda makes a call to Sophia’s boss. Sophia gives in and tells Kalinda what they she has on Cary. It’s worse than expected: an actual recording of Cary advising someone how to evade arrest. Could it be doctored? Say it ain’t so Cary!

When Diane and Alicia show up at court with a check for Cary’s bail, Finn contests it and requests a source of funds hearing. The judge grants it, which means that Cary is stuck in jail for another week at least. As Cary is led back into GenPop, Kalinda and Sophia walk right past without recognizing him. It’s all very sad, and while Cary hasn’t always been the most sympathetic character, it’s heartbreaking to watch him suffer.
