The cast of “Faking It” talks Season 2 at PaleyFest

When some AfterEllen readers ask why we’re still covering MTV’s Faking It, I have one simple answer for you: Amy.

Rita Volk plays a 15-year-old girl who is in love with her best (female) friend and realizes her sexuality is not what she thought it was, aka straight. Even though Season 1 ended with a trope we’ve seen over and over and over again (spoiler alert: sleeping with a dude), Amy’s sexual awakening and relationship with BFF Karma (Katie Stevens) is still relevant to our interests. In the Season 2 premiere, Amy doesn’t wake up with Liam in her bed and say, “Gayness over!” Instead, she immediately regrets her hung over hook up and spends the entirety of Season 2 trying to keep Karma from finding out something that could hurt her so deeply, any semblance of a friendship they have would be over.

I’m not apologizing for the show or the writers’ decision to put Amy to bed with Liam. I’m simply saying that ignoring its existence and what it means to questioning youth would do more harm than good. We, at AfterEllen, will continue to cover Faking It with our own commentary and questioning and critiquing like we would with any other show or film or piece of entertainment that in any way features or touches on on our community, whether that be in a positive or negative light or somewhere in the in between.

Last Friday night, the cast and creator Carter Covington were part of a panel at PaleyFest 2014, which was livestreamed (as you can watch below). From the conversation, we learned a few things, like why Lauren (Bailey De Young) takes pills and if Carter could ever actually see Karma and Amy ending up together. The latter had an answer that will likely make many Karmy fans upset. But those who want their friendship to last and for Amy to find happiness in her true self, even if that’s with a woman outside of Karma, might end up liking the show more than they thought.

Faking It is a show about sexual discovery and so many young women and men alike have fallen for their straight best friend. Would it be amazing to have a TV show where the couple actually ended up together and happy? A resounding yes! Faking It just isn’t that show.
