“The Bridge” recap (2.1): Yankee

Last season on The Bridge, detectives Sonya Cross and Marco Ruiz formed an unlikely partnership while investigating a series of murders of women on the Mexico-Texas border. During the investigation, Marco’s wife left him for his cheating ways and unwittingly ended up in the bed of the murderer, Kenneth Hastings. Hastings wife and son were killed in an accident that Hastings blamed on Marco. Marco’s son Gus was used as a pawn in Hastings’ revenge scheme against Marco, and is murdered. Meanwhile, El Paso investigative reporter Daniel Frye and his Juarez born colleague Adriana Mendez go in search of answers to the murders and other, much more expansive crimes. Adriana’s little sister goes missing one night on the way home from work, and the family prays that she doesn’t end up one of the pink crosses of Juarez. Charlotte Millwright, widow of a Texas rancher inherited a very dangerous piece of property; a smuggling tunnel to Mexico. When Charlotte’s old boyfriend Ray gets involved, their plans quickly turn to shit and they end up killing drug lord Graciella, in self-defense. Stephen Linder, an unstable “coyote” who helps women escape Juarez, fell in love with one of his charges and went in search of her when she turns up missing. She’d been taken by a few rogue members of the Juarez police department, raped and beaten at private police and cartel parties. Sonya and Marco rescued her and left her to be cared for by Lt. Wade. Marco, mad with grief over his son, reignites ties with cartel leader Fausto Galvan while plotting the death of Kenneth Hastings.

Good ol’ attorney Monte Flagg makes his way through the desert and stops in front of a newly constructed sub division. Once inside one of the homes, Monte finds himself slipping and sliding on fresh puddles of sticky, red blood and severed body parts. He looks up to find a smiling woman brandishing a machete, who he seems to know and not fear. In the kitchen, Monte pulls a business card from the blood soaked cardboard cutout of the realtor, Chip Diaz. Monte dials his number and a phone rings nearby. Chip, we hardly knew ya.

Sonya is taking a dip at the pool when she gets an important phone call, and has to rush out. Meanwhile, in Juarez, a swat team descends upon a house, busting down the door and arresting the occupants. While in a darkened room of the house, one of the agents turns his gun on a familiar face. It’s Marco, who is leading the charge. Marco demands that the officer lower his gun, but the mystery man simply runs off.

In a nice air-conditioned office, a Mexican prosecutor named Huerta meets with DEA Agent Joe MacKenzie. Huerta is a recent appointee to his position and MacKenzie is running into resistance from the Mexican government. His agents, who are supposed to be surveilling the cartels, keep being sent back to the States empty handed. Huerta wants to run things differently now that he’s in charge, and that includes an impromptu appointment of the very surprised Abelardo Pintado to the head prosecutor position in Chihuahua. MacKenzie has his sites set on the infamous Fausto Galvan, but Huerta wants to change direction (and the subject) inwards. He then kindly gives MacKenzie the official blow off.

Sonya makes her way to a prison where Jim Dobbs (the man who murdered her sister and has suffered severe brain damage) is lying in the infirmary. It is there that she meets Jack Dobbs, Jim’s brother. He’s taken aback when she introduces herself. Jack tells her that Jim is dying and when she offers to try and help, he’s even more confused. Sonya tells him that she doesn’t want Jim to die, but Jack isn’t sure he feels the same.

A woman named Eleanor Nacht (played by Franka Potente of Run Lola Run and Bourne fame) crosses the border checkpoint from Juarez to El Paso. She’s covered from head to toe in dowdy, heavy clothing and followed by Yovani, a man she knows. They approach a rental Prius but he’s worried that people will think he’s gay if he’s seen in a hybrid. Well, we are gonna have our work cut out with this guy.

Back at the Juarez police station, Marco watches his captain assess a pile of guns and weapons that most certainly did not come from the raid. The Capitan shrugs off Marco’s concern, saying that one day those young punks would end up being a problem anyway. He sends Marco home before taking a photo op with the poor, arrested kids and the planted weapons.

Sonya joins Lt Wade at his ranch to try and mend a recently tampered with fence. Sonya inquires about Eva who Wade says has her good and bad days. Wade in turn asks if Sonya has heard from Marco, but he’s not returning her calls. Sonya lets Wade know about Dobbs’ condition and how she met his brother that afternoon. Wade warns her to stay away from the Dobbs family altogether. Eva, calling out to him from the stables, interrupts them. There was a man in the barn, and when Wade looks out into the still night, he sees the flicker of a cigarette in the distance. Sonya joins him and pulls out a shotgun, causing the strange man to peel out of the driveway. Eva tells Sonya that man was a Juarez police officer.

Daniel Frye sits in his house, starring at the evidence he’s collected about Millie Quintana that they found at the money house. As he waits for a phone call, his sponsor drops by to check on him since Frye’s been absent from his AA meetings as of late. Frye has regained the use of his legs, albeit with a limp. Frye admits he’s been drinking again, but he’s off the hard stuff. It’s two beers a day and that’s it. His sponsor warns him that his new system isn’t going to work, but Frye is resolute. He finally gets the calls he’s been waiting for.

Sonya shows up at Marco’s place in Juarez to check up on him. He’s drunk, which has been his general state since Gus died. His wife Alma has officially divorced him, and Sonya suggests that now he can officially sleep with other women. Alma has forbidden him from attending the birth of their baby, so he’s drowning his sorrows once again. Sonya tells him about the man at the ranch and that Eva recognized him as Juarez police. Marco isn’t surprised. Eva wasn’t supposed to survive and now there are people trying to kill him and possible Sonya as well.

Pintado shows up at the Juarez police station to speak to the Capitan but Celia tells him that he’s not in. Pintado knows she’s feeding him a line, so he decides to wait.

Sonya heads back to the prison where she runs into Jack Dobbs again. He offers to call her if Jim’s condition changes, and apologizes for the earlier weirdness. She wonders if she can ask Jack questions about his brother and he says sure. They head off to grab a bite together.

Eleanor and Yovani enter a bank where a supervisor nervously awaits their arrival. When they enter his office, Yovani immediately shuts the drapes and disconnects the phone. Eleanor asks the supervisor about the money at the Quintana house. The 60 million wasn’t moved when it was supposed to, and now Eleanor holds the supervisor responsible for the deficient. He blames the courier who mixed up the dates, and Eleanor demands a name. When the supervisor’s assistant comes in with Eleanor’s tea, he spills some on her and she orders Yovani to cut off his ear. Eleanor threatens the supervisor’s family, and asks for the name of the courier again.

Sonya and Jack sit outside at a picnic table, attempting to make small talk, which is not Sonya’s forte. She asks why his brother picked her sister, but Jack doesn’t have an answer. His whole family suffered for what his brother did, and he apologizes for the pain it must have caused hers. She avoids his eyes and he attempts to leave, but Sonya stops him.

Frye meets up with stranger in an empty skate park. The man gives Frye five minutes to interview him off the record. He works in immigration and shows Frye that three members of the Quintana family were granted asylum on the same day. Frye suspects that someone is on the take.

Sonya takes Jack back to her apartment to show him a picture she has of him and his brother as little boys. It was on Jim when he was arrested. He asks if he can have it and she lets him. When he attempts to leave, she tells him not to go and reaches for his crotch. He’s not sure what the hell she’s doing but he goes with it and they start kissing. He then pulls down her pants and goes down on her while she’s still standing.

Adriana sits in a cafĂ© with another young woman talking about her missing sister. Adriana’s mother has offered a reward but Adriana feels in her gut that her sister is dead. The young woman reaches out and takes Adriana’s hand. Frye barges in looking for Adriana and is a little embarrassed for interrupting Adriana’s date with the lovely Lucy. Lucy is pleasant and funny with Frye, which he takes as an invitation to sit down and eat her fries and flirt with her. Adriana asks him to cut the shit. He gives her the scoop on what he learned about Millie Quintana from his source. She grabs his arm and tells him they need to track down the family.

Eleanor and Yovani pull up in front of the desert subdivision from the top of the episode. Chip Diaz is still very much alive and unaware of who they are when they arrive. He invites them in with a veneered smile.

Marco runs into his captain in the men’s restroom, and the Capitan asks Marco to meet with Pintado for him. Put on a nice show like he actually cares. Marco agrees. When Marco greets Pintado, the prosecutor already knows who he is. He offers condolences on the loss of Gus as Marco leads him to a records room in disarray. Pintado isn’t surprised. Marco inquires as to what Pintado is looking for, and Pintado says he’ll know when he sees it.

As Jack is getting dressed at Sonya’s, he notices the pictures drawn by Jim on her fridge. When he asks why she put them up, she tells him it’s because she likes looking at them. This obviously freaks Jack out, because he takes off immediately after. Sonya looks at the pictures, and focuses in on one with two dark figures underneath a rainbow.

Eva and Wade wait on a dusty road for someone. Eva is no longer safe at Wade’s house, so she’d heading somewhere she can really hide while Wade tries to get her a visa. Reverend Bob pulls up to take her back to his ranch in the desert. Wade gives him the third degree before ultimately agreeing to trust him with Eva’s safety.

Sonya gets called in to check out a potential crime scene at night in the desert. It’s the Prius, driving around by itself in circles with a dead dog hanging out the window. It’s also covered in blood. When the car slows down enough to approach, inside Sonya finds a very dead Yovani.

Two teenagers on bikes discover a tattooed covered, naked Eleanor, washing herself down in a car wash lot. On her back is a massive drawing of some sort of beast holding a bowl. She notices the boys and asks them for help.
