“The Bridge” recap (2:11): Beholder

In their hideout, Fausto Galvan and Obregon get to work on making a video to send to Sebastian Cerisola. Romina, Cerisola’s daughter, is tied up and suffering through heroin withdrawal. Galvan and Obregon actually struggle a bit getting the video just right, and have to stop and start a few times. In the end, Galvan threatens Cerisola by telling the camera, if the authorities find him, he will execute Romina.

At the El Paso station, Sonya sits with agents from the CIA who want to discuss the Red Ridge incident and subsequent events. The mysterious CIA agent is there (still not giving us his name) as well as another agent (played by the always wonderful Adam Arkin) Sonya blurts out the fact that she knows the CIA was interfering with the DEA investigation, making the mysterious agent a little edgy and defensive. He accuses her of having a role in the breakdown of border security. (Never trust a dude who spits orange seeds into his hand.) Sonya tells them that she needs to speak to Eleanor, but she is told that Eleanor’s interview is now in the hands of the Department of Justice. So, no Nacht for you. In a roundabout way, the mysterious agent inquires about the ledger, but Sonya plays dumb, saying that everything in the Red Ridge house has been inventoried. As she leaves, the other agent asks if she is taking any medication. Rightfully offended by his digging into her personal files, she coldly says no.

Back in Juarez, Marco is on the scene of a vandalized shop. The shop owner cleans up as he explains that some thugs came in demanding money on a weekly basis, and when he couldn’t pay, they trashed the place. Marco offers to send a patrol car to keep an eye on the place, but the shop owner tells him that the cop will just demand a bribe as well. Marco leaves, disheartened.

Adriana and Frye show up at Agent McKenzie’s funeral, not to pay respects, but to get some dirt. We do find out that Lucy is doing well and getting her stitches out soon. They approach Mrs. McKenzie but when she finds out they are reporters, she gets upset. Frye manages to calm her, and asks if she recognizes the handwriting on the Euro note they received that set this whole investigation in motion. She says nothing about the handwriting, but mentions a special project her husband was working on in their garage. Naturally, Frye and Adriana head over to the garage and break in. They run in, grab some boxes full of files, and get the hell out.

As Marco is looking through some old pictures, Sonya shows up at his place and lets him know that Hank is doing much better. She tells him about getting kicked off of Eleanor’s case, and he reveals that he may know where Fausto Galvan is hiding out. His money is on an old hideout of his father’s. Fausto and Marco’s father became close when Fausto and Marco were teenagers. Marco wants to ask a State Prosecutor for his help in securing the Marines to root Galvan out. But first, he wants to tell the truth about the hotel shooting and asks Sonya to come with him. She agrees.

While Cerisola and his wife are watching a news report about the missing Galvan, he receives the video message. He lies to his wife, claiming it’s just from the office, but there is panic in his eyes.

At the State Prosecutor’s office, Marco asks for help with taking down Galvan. The prosecutor compares the Mexican and American governmental systems, saying there are both corrupt, and they both need the money from the drug cartels. Marco asks him to cut the shit and help arrange a meeting with the Marines, so Marco can get Fausto.

Eva and Linder sit eating popsicles in the car, chatting about the weather. Eva suggests that he shave his beard, but in all seriousness, Linder claims it gives him special powers. “You don’t need that anymore, ” she tells him. “I want to see your face.” She looks at him with might very well be affection in her eyes, and after a little fumbling for words, he agrees. She smiles widely at him. Just then, a man’s voice is heard. It’s Capitan Robles, playing basketball in the driveway with his teenage sons. They plan to seek revenge on him next. When Eva notices that he has children, she softens a bit. Linder drives off, but not before calling Robles a miserable dog under his breath.

Cerisola meets with one of Attorney General Huerta to beg him to call off the dogs on Galvan, for his daughter’s sake. Huerta tells Cerisola that Galvan is priority number one, and not even a kidnapped college student is going to be able to put that genie back in the bottle.

Sonja is waiting by Hank’s bedside when he wakes. He inquires about Eleanor, and she breaks the news that the case has been taken away from them. Hank gets upset, and tries to get out of bed but she stops him. He tells Sonya about the hidden ledger and sends her off to find it. She sneaks into the crime scene, and finds the book hidden in an old fuse box.

At Galvan’s hideout, Romina is lucid and pissed off now. She tries to bite Obregon when he brings her some food, so he takes it right back. Outside, Galvan is drinking some cognac and listening to the music that is carrying across the desert. It’s a Quincentinera, and he wasn’t invited. To remedy this, Galvan waltzes over with his armed men and crashes the party. He walks up to the stunned parents and teenager, and gives them his best wishes. He then asks to join the party, and the frightened father reluctantly agrees. Galvan hands the birthday girl a massive wad of American dollars, and asks if he can have a dance. The terrified girl looks to her father, who has no real choice other than to say yes.

When Sonya gets home, she pulls out some rubber gloves and a Spanish to English dictionary and dives into the ledger. It’s full of drawings, scribbles, and of course numbers. As Sonya flips a page, she finds the hair necklace she left for the her mother that day and it takes her breath away. When she returns to the office, she convinces Cooper to help her interview Eleanor. When Sonya gets Eleanor alone, she’s visibly nervous, while Eleanor is initially cool as a cucumber. When Sonya starts to question Eleanor about the murder of the teenage boy and why she spared his friend, Eleanor snaps. As a Mexican national, Eleanor claims that Sonya has no jurisdiction to question her. Sonya then grills her about Galvan and Cerisola. Eleanor feels that Cerisola failed her by not executing Sonya and Marco when he had the chance. Sonya asks for Eleanor’s help in bringing both men down. Eleanor isn’t in a helping mood. “We are absolutely irrelevant,” Eleanor snarls out at Sonya. When Sonya asks Eleanor why she does what she does, her response is simple. She wants to be free. Sonya then pulls out the hair necklace, and Eleanor instantly knows that Sonya has her ledger. Eleanor turns the subject to Sonya’s mother, the homeless drug addict. She reveals that her own mother stood by while her father raped her. Sonya gets emotional, but doesn’t crumble like Eleanor would like. Sonya tells her that she’s sorry for what was happened in the past. Just then, the CIA interrupts their session and orders Sonya to leave.

Marco gets his meeting with the Marines, but they aren’t too keen on Marco joining the raid on Galvan’s. Marco is insistent that a capture won’t go down unless he is involved. Marco wants to go in alone, and be backed up by the Marines, a plan which the head Marine is not a fan of. However, he agrees to go along and hands Marco a special satellite radio to call out when he needs them to move in. Marco wants to take Galvan alive, but the Marines are giving no guarantees.

At their camp set up, Eva and Linder get to shaving off his beard. Eva tells him that she no longer wants to live in the past, but Linder is hell bent on revenge. When she shaves him completely, his bare and rather handsome face shines through. Eva leans down and kisses him. They make love under a canopy, kissing, until Eva is suddenly haunted by her traumatic memories. Linder instantly stops and lies beside her. They simply hold one another instead.

As Frye and Adriana go through the files they stole from McKenzie’s garage, the pieces start to come together. They discover a file on the mysterious agent Buckley, and find that he had been stationed in the Middle East before showing up in El Paso. Adriana has an “ah ha” moment. “It’s a war between the DEA and the CIA.” Adriana shows up late to pick Lucy up from the hospital, but when she arrives, she can’t bear the thought of involving Lucy in any more danger. Adriana breaks up with her, then and there. Lucy asks Adriana to give up the story, but Adriana chooses her work over her relationship.

Eleanor pushed a button in Sonya regarding her mother, so Sonya tracks her estranged mother down. Her mother is less that thrilled to see her though. Sonya buys them both lunch and sits down in an alley to talk. Her mother asks why she still insists on wearing her sister’s jacket after all this time. Her mother lacks the sentimental spirit that Sonya has. Sonya hands her mother some cash and asks her to get out of town for a little while. If Eleanor can track down Sonya’s mother, so can someone else who wants to harm her.

Marco shows up at a market/botanica looking for a gent named Cuco. The two go way back. Marco asks if Cuco has seen Fausto around, but Cuco points him in another direction. “That asshole’s in Acapulco!” Marco knows he’s lying though his teeth. Cuco is only trying to protect Marco though. Marco and the Marines now know that Fausto Galvan is indeed at Marco’s father’s old hideout.

As Sonya sits at her desk, looking at old pictures of her and her mother, Cooper rushes over to tell her that Eleanor has been moved on Buckley’s authority. Buckley drives Eleanor away in his car, while they discuss how to get their hands on the ledger. He tells her to clean up her mess, and she promises she will.

When Sonya pulls up to her apartment complex, she notices a black SUV waiting in front. She drives past, and back onto the road, ledger by her side.

Also driving in the dark is Marco and this Marine escorts. He pulls over and tells the Marines that he’ll go the rest of the way alone. Just then, a teenager on a bike rides by and the Marines grab him and begin to question what he’s doing there. They find a walkie talkie on the boy, and one of the Marines pulls his gun on the kid. Marco then pulls his gun out and points it at the Marine, telling everyone to calm down. Shots ring out from the darkness, killing both Marines and leaving Marco with a laser target on his chest. Three armed men come into view, and head towards Marco.
