“The Bridge” recap (1.5): The Beast

What makes a serial killer different from someone who simply kills a lot of people? Well, if you ask Fausto Galvan, it’s all about the enjoyment of the kill. Galvan and his right hand man are reading about the murderer in the news, and Galvan tries to distinguish himself from the Butcher on the Bridge. Galvan rationalizes that even though he’s killed many, he doesn’t enjoy it. That’s what separates him from this animal. He then goes into the back room, where Hector’s cousin sits tied up and bloody. Galvan gets what he wants, then shoots him dead.

Marco and his family are about to sit down to Sunday night dinner when Sonya shows up at his door. She’s upset that he’s not answering his phone. He tells her, umm, it’s Sunday night. She has intel on Agent Gedman so he invites her to join his family for dinner. She tells him that Agent Gedman used to frequent Christina Fuentes on a weekly basis. Marco’s son Gus is smitten with Sonya, but she just wants to know why the hell he keeps staring at her.

After she insults the meal, she tells Marco that Charlotte Millright dropped his wallet off at the station. At first this slips by, mostly unnoticed, until later that evening when Marco and Alma are getting ready for bed. Marco has a habit of taking his wallet out and leaving it on the night table, and it all makes sense to Alma. She tells him to get out.

Marco ends up sleeping at the El Paso police station, and gives Sonya that “Thanks for ruining my life, again” face. It’s totally lost on her. The FBI is still there, and denying access to Gedman’s files. Even though he’s been cleared as a suspect, Marco is still stuck on Steven Linder being involved in something shady.

Gina, a teenager who was booked on a shoplifting arrest, gets bailed out by her father. She asks if she can stay with him for a while, but he says that his girlfriend wouldn’t like that. She shrugs it off and tells him that she will find her way home. She doesn’t go home, however. She pushes her way across the border and walks aimlessly through the streets of Juarez.

At the hospital, Maria, the woman from the desert, is in and out of consciousness. Frye is there when Sonya arrives. She wants to get to questioning, but the doctor tells her that Maria isn’t ready. Frye is waiting for a break in the story and is particularity annoyed by Sonya’s questions. She asks him if he’s done a lot of drugs and at that moment, I imagine he wishes he had done more that day.

Steven Linder is ironing in his saggy undies when Hector, who has snuck into his apartment, startles him. Hector demands to know where Eva is and the two begin to brawl.

Hector gets Steven in his noose, but the iron is close by and Steven knocks Hector unconscious just as there is a knock at his door. Marco arrives and has a few questions for him. Steven refuses to let him in, and once Marco leaves, Steven picks up the iron and finishes what he started. He drags Hector’s body into the living room, where he wraps his head in saran wrap. (It clings!) He then rolls Hector’s body into a blanket.

Everyone at the station seems to be in a bad mood. Marco tells Sonya that she jeopardized his marriage by giving him the wallet in front of Alma, and that she should have his back. Still somewhat unclear as to how her returning his wallet has anything to do with Marco banging Charlotte Millright, she offers to let Marco stay on her couch. Marco, who has been relentless that day, shows up at he El Paso Times to “talk” to Frye. Frye is all sass, chomping on some Red Vines and being unhelpful as usual. Marco spills coffee all over Frye’s desk as a diversionary tactic, and pockets his phone.

Maria is awake and talking now, so Marco and Sonya head over to the hospital to ask her some questions. Marco gives Sonya Frye’s phone, and she tells him that what he did was illegal. Marco is like “Meh, legal schmegal.” Maria begs them not to send her back, and reveals that she has a child waiting for her in Houston. Marco tells her not to say anything more until she gets offered asylum. He talks to Lt. Wade who says he has a friend at Homeland Security and Wade offers to speak to them on Maria’s behalf.

Steven Linder is doing his darndest to dispose of Hector’s body, which is tough when you live in a walk up. He ends up driving to the side of the building and pushing Hector’s body out the window. It unfortunately ends up hitting the car instead of the ground, making a huge racket. Steven leans out the window and says, “Oh dear.” Luckily for him, no one else seems to notice.

At the station, Frye’s phone begins to ring in Sonya’s bag. She answers the call, and it’s a women looking for Frye. The phone rings again, and when Sonya picks it up, she identifies herself. This time it’s the killer. He hangs up and calls her on desk line. She claims to understand him because she’s studying him. This will either piss him off or be a huge turn on. He tells her that he will be targeting institutions, and due to the recent developments with Gedman, she zeros in on the FBI.

Charlotte waits nervously in a coffee shop. Marco shows up after Miss Kitty (the awesome police receptionist) tells him Charlotte has been calling. Charlotte blushes like a schoolgirl. Knock it off, Charlotte. She confesses to Marco that she’s in a lot of trouble and asks if he knows about Graciela Rivera. He does, and knows that she’s bad news. She begins to tell him about the tunnel and he literally covers his ears like a five year old. She asks him what she should do, and his advice is to wait it out a couple of years. Well, that was helpful Marco. Charlotte ends up at home alone, drinking wine like a regular Ashley Marin and calling an old flame.

Marco arrives back at the police station and Sonya asks if he was having more of the sexes with Charlotte. She lets him know that the killer called and that the FBI has known about Gedman and Christina’s video for months. Lt. Wade delivers the good news that he scored a visa for Maria. Now they can question her.

The young American girl, Gina, is sitting on the steps to an apartment building when a young man approaches her. He offers her some beers and she follows him inside. Another young woman walks in as they are drinking and asks why the hell there is a white girl is sitting in her living room. The guy tells her to go back to her room. She rolls her eyes and leaves.

However, when the young man is on the phone arranging a pick up of some sort, the girl grabs Gina and let’s her know that she is in danger. They take off running, and disappear into the night. The young woman takes Gina to a gravesite covered in pink crosses. She tells Gina that the man was going to kidnap her for ransom. She also tells Gina about The Beast, who is responsible for killing all these girls.

Marco and Sonya are getting ready for bed at her place. Marco sees pictures posted all around that look like a child drew them. He asks Sonya about them and she tells him that a brain-damaged man named Jim Dobbs drew them-the same man who killed her sister when Sonya was 15. Marco asks if it was a violent death, and Sonya doesn’t respond.

Now that Maria is safe from deportation, she tells the detectives what she knows about the killer. She didn’t see much, but the killer was a white man and his car was like a cage. A police car. Sonya wonders aloud if it was one of their own.

In the warm light of day, the two teenage girls share some churros on a bench. The local girl asks Gina if her parents would wonder where she is. She tells her no, that her father is too into his girlfriend to notice and her mom is totally messed up. The local girl tells her to never come back to Juarez, but she says it out of concern and affection. She doesn’t want Gina to become one of the Pink Crosses, like her own sister did. Gina follows her words of advice and goes home.

At the ranch, a beefy, golf-pro looking fellow shows up and Charlotte comes out to greet him. He calls her a hot widow, which is certainly an aphrodisiac if I’ve ever heard one. They shoot the shit about Tampa (it’s muggy) and they go inside to explore his new tattoos.

Back at the El Paso PD, one of the detectives, Tim Cooper, who I like to call “Pornstache 2.0” hands Sonya and Marco a file on Gedman. Gedman you see was a bad boy, and the FBI ordered him to see a psychologist by the name of Dr. Meadows. The detectives decide to head over to Dr. Meadows and ask him some questions about his recently departed patient.

Steven Linder is sweating it out in the desert after dragging Hector’s body to a remote location and digging a grave for him. He is distracted when he hears a car approaching, fast. The car peels into a stop, right in front of the grave and Galvan and associate get out. Galvan points to Hector’s body. “This is mine,” he growls. Oh Steven, this is a fine mess.

Sonya and Marco arrive at Dr. Meadow’s house, which happens to be the same house that Gina let herself into just a short time before. They notice a car with a cage in the driveway and draw their guns. They search the house and find Dr. Meadows, his throat slashed. Marco busts into the closet nearby, where a terrified Gina sits sobbing in the corner. Sonya recognizes her from the station. “I saw the beast!” she cries. “I saw the beast!”
