“The Boat that Rocked” shows lesbian romance in 1960s London

The first media screening of the upcoming ensemble comedy, The Boat that Rocked, took place in London this week, and featured a lesbian character, Felicity, played by English actress Katherine Parkinson.

The film, from director Richard Curtis (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill, Bridget Jones’s Diary), focuses on the staff of a pirate radio station in 1960s Britain. Starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Emma Thompson, Bill Nighy and Kenneth Branagh, the film “is about a band of rogue DJs that captivated Britain, playing the music that defined a generation and standing up to a government that, incomprehensibly, preferred jazz.”

According to AfterEllen.com reader Karen, Parkinson’s Felicity is the only woman on board, and while her role as a shady lady is somewhat minor, it does involve an on-screen, same-sex romance.

Parkinson has appeared in a handful of films, including last year’s adaptation of How to Lose Friends & Alienate People (maybe you didn’t notice her playing a publicist, because you were too focused on Megan Fox walking through a swimming pool in a skimpy dress?). The Boat that Rocked hits U.K. theaters on April 1. Other release dates, and more information are available on the film’s website.
