The Best and Gayest of the 2014 Grammys

Last night’s Grammys was a bit of a mix of boring and brilliant, which has become par for the course in the last few years. Let’s break down the best moments, in case you missed them or want to relive them again.

BeyoncĂ© opened the show in a very sexy Chromat-created outfit from out designer Becca McCharen. Bey’s “Drunk in Love” had her showing her love for her hubs Jay-Z, but we appreciated her bootyliciousness, per usual.

Lorde is only 17-years-old, but she is now a two-time Grammy winner. The “Royals” singer performed impeccably and stuck to her goth chic attire for the night.

Taylor Swift sounded pretty sweet when she took to the piano for her song “All Too Well,” but the country singer who really won the night was Kacey Musgraves. Katy Perry’s upcoming tour mate performed “Follow Your Arrow,” a song co-written with out songwriter Brandy Clark that encourages you to kiss boys or girls, whatever you’re into. Kacey took home Best Country Album for Same Trailer Different Park and Best Country Song.

Katy herself did a Coven-inspired performance of “Dark Horse,” complete with using an enlarged broomstick as a pole. Somewhere her super Christian parents are crying.

Pink, though, was the real wow of the evening, doing her aerial moves while singing her heart out. She’s a multi-tasker.

The biggest moment of the evening came when Queen Latifah introduced winners Macklemore and Ryan Lewis with Mary Lambert in a performance of “Same Love,” which did not win Best Song but definitely inspired a lot of hope this year. The Queen officiated as 30 couples (gay, straight, lesbian) exchanged rings in the aisles and became partners for life. Then Madonna came out in an all-white suit (with a cane) and helped bring the chorus home, singing “she keeps me warm” with Mary Lambert, the actual lesbian on stage.

Backstage, Queen explained why she wanted to be a part of the moment.

Another inspired moment went down when big winners Daft Punk had songwriter Paul Williams shout out Macklemore and Ryan Lewis for their song on equality while accepting their award for Album of the Year. It was a great night for Mack and RL, as they took home four awards including Best Rap Album.

Sara Bareilles and Carole King did a sweet piano-duet mash-up of some of their hits.

Although we didn’t get to see some of the awards given out in a pre-telecast, Tig Notaro was a presenter but did not win Best Comedy Album. That went to Kathy Griffin on her sixth time being nominated.

And some of the after-parties looked to be pretty hot.
