Brunch With Linda Villarosa (Brunch With Bridget, Episode 24)

This week, Bridget welcomes Linda Villarosa, out journalist and author of the steamy new novel Passing For Black.

Linda talks with Bridget about her career as a writer, including her days at Essence magazine, when she shocked the readership by coming out in print. She also tells us all about her adventures in motherhood, the biggest fish she ever caught, and who she thinks should play the leads in the cinematic version of her new book. (Here's a hint: It's Halle Berry and Angelina Jolie.)

Finally, Linda teaches Bridget how to fish using a chopstick, which is pretty much just as ridiculous as it sounds.

Dinah 2008 Logo Comedy Cocktail Hour: Bridget McManus

AfterEllen.com's own Bridget McManus was spreading herself pretty thin at The Dinah this year. As if accosting people on the red carpet, showing off her splits technique during the improv, and singing a vaguely inappropriate "sorority" song to Sarah Warn weren't enough, she also performed at the Logo Comedy Cocktail Hour.

There Bridget regaled the crowd with a couple of memorable ditties (accompanied by her trusty tambourine), shared some treasured family memories, and paid tribute to her favorite restaurant, Red Lobster.

All Access Pass: Sweet Baby J'ai

In the first episode of AfterEllen.com's new bi-weekly video blog All Access Pass, host Andrea Meyerson (Women on a Roll, All Out Films) visits with jazz singer, songwriter and actress, Sweet Baby J'ai at her home.

Sweet Baby J'ai shares stories about being an out lesbian on the jazz circuit, starring in the stage production of "Prove It On Me" and also talks about the influence and importance of queer women in jazz in the '20s, like Ma Rainey, Gladys Bentley, and Bessie Smith.

She also gives us a sneak preview of her one of the tracks on her soon-to-be released CD, Introducing J'ai Michel.

Want to see her perform live? Catch Sweet Baby J'ai at the upcoming Cambria Women's Weekend.

You Can't Take Them Anywhere! Dinah 2008

For our latest YCTTA adventure, Bridget and I traveled to Palm Springs for that legendary event known as The Dinah. It's where lesbians from all over gather together to dance in their swimsuits, wait in line for drink tickets, and avoid their exes.

In addition to that kind of fun, quite a few celezbians were participating in the fashion show, performing music and comedy, and touting their wares. We talked to a number of them on the red carpet Friday night before the fire marshal shut us down for causing a mob scene. (Yeah, we're pretty proud of that one. No, they did not hose us down, much to Bridget's dismay.)

Among them were Dani Campbell (A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila), who told us about her new fashion line, and Kate McKinnon of The Big Gay Sketch Show, who confessed her obsession with the Food Network. Jenny Shimizu (Dante's Cove) showed up in colorful attire, reminding us that we were not as cool as her because we actually followed directions and wore white to the white party. (Just kidding! We didn't need to be reminded that we're not as cool as Jenny. We already knew.)

So put on your best white outfit, sit back, and hear what the celesbians have to say about Dinah...

Six moments in entertainment that we wish were April Fool's jokes

Don't judge the number on this list!  Six is my lucky number.  Or am I just saying that six is my lucky number as an April fool's joke?  You can't be sure what is or isn't true today, can you? Now that I have made you paranoid, here are my Top Six Moments in Entertainment that I wish were just bad pranks rather than true events.

6. Anne Heche Phones Home

Anne Heche has had some public ups and downs but nothing shines so bright as her attempt to board the Mothership.

In 2000, Heche (aka Celestia, aka AreYouKiddingMe?!) was found wandering in a rural area outside Fresno wearing only a bra and shorts (attire only acceptable for Dinah Shore weekend).  AreYouKiddingMe?! rang a stranger's doorbell and requested directions to a gateway into outer space and then asked if she could use their shower. (I always freshen up before exiting the planet.)

5. Cher Retires...

...again and again and again.  The artist only known by one name (and Mama Bear to Chastity Bono, pictured below sporting a mullet) has been entertaining the world for over 40 years. She won an Academy Award, Grammy Award, Emmy Award and three Golden Globes.

Sadly, Cher hung her wigs up for good during her Farewell Tour in April 2005 at the Hollywood Bowl. We miss you Cher we miss you ... but wait! We will NOT miss you anymore because you're back in effect at Caesar's Palace performing the Cher Resurrection Cher Returns tour!

You tricked us Cher! We thought you were going to sit home in a rocking chair crocheting until death came knocking at your door. Good one Cher! You really April-fooled us this time! (P.S. more butt tattoos, please.)

4. Winona Ryder Needs to Borrow Five Bucks

In 2002, Hollywood's not so-girl next door Winona Ryder was convicted of stealing $5,500 in clothing from Saks Fifth Ave.  The two-time Academy Award nominee has worked with Tim Burton and sex goddess Angelina Jolie, yet all she ever wanted was a petite oyster-colored sweater set.

In one afternoon, Ryder set pixies back 20 years. Tinkerbell is the only one we can trust now. … continue reading

Gay paydays

When business types talk about the "gay dollar," they're usually talking about gay men rather than lesbians. But every now and then, some of us get a windfall. Here are two tales of cashing in:

1. In Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, a lesbian couple has hit the lotto jackpot -- to the tune of $4,203,469. Maria Merlie De Vera plans to quit her job, but her partner, Mel De Vera, plans to keep working. Why do people do that? I used to buy lotto tickets with some co-workers, and we all agreed that the … continue reading

Suze Orman comes out

Suze OrmanDarn these celebrities for coming out on the weekend! Don't they know how busy we are here? Anyway, via Americablog I learned that financial guru Suze Orman is coming out in the New York Times Magazine this Sunday. Raise your hand if you're as surprised as I am. Yeah, didn't think so.

Anyway, Suze describes herself as a "55-year-old virgin," which sounds odd since she's been in a rela … continue reading

Barbara Gittings, 1932–2007

bgittings.jpgBarbara Gittings died Feb. 18. During her long activist career, she worked wonders for lesbian rights and visibility.

Gittings was the first president of the New York chapter of the Daughters of Bilitis, a groundbreaking lesbian society in the '50s. She also served as editor of its magazine, The Ladder.

She was also a key figure in the effort to remove homosexuality from the American Psychiatric Association's list of mental disorders, and … continue reading

Lonelygirls2007 unite

Don't have a Valentine today? Well, don't feel bad. It's overrated. Hearts. Flowers. Candy. OK, the candy is all right, but otherwise the year's second-biggest excuse to buy people things they in no way need is a bunch of hooey. That's right, Hallmark, I said hooey.

Instead, revel in your freedom, ladies. If lesbian movies are any indication, you're way better off. A rundown of the top 5 reasons to be glad you're single this Valentine's Day:

1) When you're single, you won't date a serial killer, like in Monster.

Hasbians everywhere

It's a hot, or at least warm, topic these days: women who used to be lesbians but now date men. Sometimes they still call themselves lesbians (we're looking at you, Tina, with no small amount of confusion on our faces), but sometimes they shun the word and all things related to it. Sometimes they even start preaching about how wrong it is to be gay, like Venus continue reading

I heart comics
