Dirt

"Dirt" goes six feet under

Gossip may sell on the newsstands (not to mention on the internet), but it appears FX isn’t buying it in primetime anymore. Dirt creator and star Courtney Cox announced that her series had been canceled while at a charity event Sunday.

The show ran two seasons on FX, though its second season was abridged by the Writers Strike. During its run it featured two prominent gay female characters. The first was lesbian drug dealer Garbo (Carly Pope). Her storyline involved a fairly graphic, accoutrement-enhanced sex scene with buyer/aspiring starlet Julia (Laura Allen). … continue reading

The "Dirt" on Sunday

Season 2 of Dirt starts Sunday on FX, and I still haven't decided how I feel about Season 1. I like Courteney Cox, but her character, Lucy Spiller, was far from endearing. Yet, I kept watching. I don't know why.

OK, maybe I do. But hotness alone does not a good show make. Actually, the character I came to enjoy most was schizophrenic paparazzo Don Konkey, played by Ian Hart. I think it's the hat.

Word is that this season will be a little lighter, with "ripped-from-the-headlines" stories. I hope that means we'll see Cox have a bit more fun with Lucy. A bit of Miranda Priestly would do wonders for Dirt. … continue reading

Carly Pope is one of the new popular gals on "24"

I’ve never watched 24. Not ever. Not even one clock tick. It’s just not my thing. And after six years of hearing our president mispronounce “terrorists,” I’ve pretty much lost all interest in the topic — real or pretend. So I had no intentions of watching the upcoming seventh season. Then, they started to announce the cast. And, well, things got interesting. The latest new installment, as mentioned in last week’s Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever., is Carly Pope.

You know Carly most recently as the lesbian drug dealer to the stars in Dirt; a CIA agent (the good kind, not the ones in black coats) in The Itty Bitty Titty Committee; and, of course, Sam from Popular. Well, now she will play Samantha Roth, the girlfriend of the president’s son who might be connected to his disappearance. I only watched Dirt on and off — it was a little too bleak and joyless for my taste — but I did catch Carly in a few choice scenes. Very choice. … continue reading

Oprah tops the Forbes Celebrity 100

It's Friday, and the lists keep coming. As Dorothy Snarker wrote yesterday, "You know you can't resist them and, clearly, neither can I. So let's put on our yelling caps and take a look at this puppy." Today we have the annual Forbes Celebrity 100, a list of "the world's most powerful--and best-paid--celebrities." Who's No. 1? Oprah Winfrey.

Worth an estimated $1.5 billion, last year Oprah earned approximately $260 million. She has two reality shows in ABC's fall lineup in addition to her many other media ventures, and you may remember that this past year she opened the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa.

Oprah has often been a friend to the gays, too. Long dogged by rumors that she is a lesbian, she has never flinched from openly addressing the subject. And her talk show has covered lesbian and gay stories over the years, including "When I Knew I Was Gay" in November 2005 and "Wives Who Confess They Are Gay" in October 2006. … continue reading
