Nip/Tuck

Katee Sackhoff goes in for a "Nip/Tuck"

Are you ready for Dr. Starbuck? Battlestar Galactica veteran Katee Sackhoff has signed on as a recurring character in the sixth season of Nip/Tuck. She will play Dr. Theodora “Teddy” Lowe, a new doctor who challenges Dylan Walsh’s character Sean.

"Teddy?" Well, it’s good to see she hasn’t lost her affinity for nicknames. But, once again, I fear Katee is starring in a series below her abilities. Her guest turn as the charismatic crazy/crazy charismatic Sarah Corvus was the best thing about Bionic Woman. Well, that and Michelle Ryan’s one-armed pull-ups.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Katee will appear in four episodes. Not much else has been released about the role. Now, I won’t lie, I’m not too fond of Nip/Tuck; I’ve tried and tried. In its earlier seasons its audacity was fun, but as the series has dragged on, it became less fun more freaking ridiculous. … continue reading

TV alert: Jennifer Coolidge on "Nip/Tuck"

Yeah, I'm starting to loathe Nip/Tuck, but I decided to finish the season, mostly to see Jennifer Coolidge in the finale tonight. You may know Coolidge from Best in Show (she got to kiss Jane Lynch!), For Your Consideration, American Pie or Legally Blonde.

She almost always plays characters who are described as "dim-witted," but you have to be smart to play that dumb — and to be that funny. Here's a clip from Best in Show.

"We could not talk or talk forever, and still find things to not talk about." Love it!

Here's hoping Coolidge's Nip/Tuck character will get to retain a little dignity ... oh, who am I kidding? She wasn't exactly dignified the first time she showed up: She played a Hearts and Scalpels patient who had a, um, lip transplant. That means what you think it means.

Coolidge also has several film projects in the works, if you just can't bear to tune in tonight. And if you haven't seen Best in Show, rent it now!

TV alert: "Nip/Tuck" tours "lesbania"

So, are you watching Nip/Tuck? I am, but often through my fingers — and not because of the plastic surgery scenes. I want to see Portia de Rossi and Joely Richardson as often as possible (who wouldn't?), but every time they show up, I wince and fear mishandling of the story line.

[Warning: Mild spoilers]

Last week, I really liked Julia's heart-to-heart with Sean. She seemed like a woman who's not really embracing or rejecting anything just yet. And she was kind to her ex-husband, which is always a breath of fresh air on a show that has come to rely on exposure (of every sort) and betrayal for drama. It wasn't always like that — the first couple of seasons of Nip/Tuck were richer and more complex, still soapy but not always taking the easy way out.

And the easy way out is what worries me. Right after Julia's forthrightness warmed the cockles of my heart, Sean and Christian played cock of the walk, tossing around epithets and bravado until I felt sick. So I don't know whether to be optimistic about the Julia/Olivia relationship — well, I know I shouldn't have high hopes for a happy ending, but will we even get to enjoy a few short weeks of romance and hotness? I'm a fool to believe, and Liz (Roma Maffia) would be the first to tell me so. … continue reading

Sharon Gless to “Nip/Tuck” — will somebody tell me why?

What is it about Nip/Tuck that attracts fabulous women? I’m serious. The list of past guest stars includes Famke Janssen, Vanessa Redgrave, Alanis Morissette, Jill Clayburgh, Rosie O’Donnell, Kathleen Turner, Brooke Shields and Jacqueline Bisset. Plus, Lauren Hutton, Madonna, Paula Marshall, Portia de Rossi, Jennifer Coolidge, Tia Carrere and Daphne Zuniga are scheduled for season 5. Now yet another lesbian crush has signed on — the icon formerly known as Christine Cagney, Sharon Gless.

Gless will appear in a four-episode arc as Colleen Rose, a talent agent who wants to represent Sean. (I guess even plastic surgeons need agents in Hollywood.) I’m glad Gless is building on her recent success in Burn Notice, the spy drama from USA that was one of summer TV’s nicest surprises. But I just can’t get in to Nip/Tuck. I’m not sure why. I mean, Dexter is one of my all-time favorite shows, and it’s nothing if not graphic. But Nip/Tuck makes me weak in the knees. And not in a good way. … continue reading
