SHE MADE ME WATCH THIS! The New TV Classics

Entertainment Weekly just released their list of the new classic TV shows, movies, music, and books. So Lori and I — with guestbian Dee — decided to give you our take on the new TV classics.

We nominate some shows we all agree on (like Golden Girls), some we definitely don't (Arrested Development), and a few that might surprise you (Dawson's Creek).

Watch and see if you agree with our choices...

She Made Me Watch This! The New TV Classics

Let us know in the comments which shows you think future generations should watch, and why!

SMMWT! will be on a short break for the next few weeks while Lori and I are in France, but we'll be back with new episodes in late July. Watch previous episodes here.

MENSA's not-so-smart list of smartest TV shows

Ever wondered what people with really high IQs do in their spare time? Neither have I. Well, OK, I have wondered what some of them do. To the point of distraction, in fact.

But whether you wanted to know or not, Fancast reports that MENSA chairman Jim Werdell watches about 10 hours of television every day. (The average American watches four and a half hours.) And apparently, the combination of high IQ and television addiction makes Werdell qualified to list the 10 smartest TV shows of all time.

I won't argue with No. 1, simply because my daddy's favorite television show was M*A*S*H and he was smart. That's good enough for me.

I'll also concede that Frasier, All in the Family and West Wing deserve spots on the list. (Dang, how much do you miss C.J.?) … continue reading

Breaking news: There are no lesbians on network TV. What?!

Just in time for the fall TV season, GLAAD has released its 12th annual Where We Are on TV report, and the answer is — brace yourselves — we're nowhere.

Or, to put it differently, lesbians and bisexual women do exist on network TV, but we're competing with Lucy Liu for screentime. (We already love you, Bonnie Somerville on Cashmere Mafia.)

Or we're a cartoon (hi, Julie Kavner as Patty Bouvier on The Simpsons) or a mayor with a pretty small audience (keep on keepin' on, Libby Villari on Friday Night Lights.) Otherwise, no, we don't really exist. In case you hadn't noticed. And even though there are way more gay men on TV (waaay!), they're mostly white, which makes them just as misrepresented. Sure, things are better on cable, but must we be ghettoized so relentlessly?

In short, GLAAD has pretty much justified every rant we've ever done here on AferEllen.com. Read the report (and behold their very clear, very sobering graphics) and weep! And then thank GLAAD for getting the word out, because maybe someday someone will listen.

Simpsonize yourself (or anyone else)

Have you ever wondered what you’d look like as a Simpsons character? Have you ever wondered what your favorite celebrity would look like as a Simpsons character? Have you ever been bored at work? If you answered yes to any or all of those questions, consider today your lucky day. The clever marketers for The Simpsons Movie have created “Simpsonize Me,” a site where you can transform yourself (or anyone else) into a cartoon denizen of Springfield. I tried my hand at a few famous faces:

All you need is a 640x480 color image, patience and a lenient work environment, and you too could be playing sax with Lisa or skateboarding with Bart. Well, figuratively. The site allows you to customize your facial features, hairstyle, body type and accessories. … continue reading

The seven coolest (female) geeks on TV

TV Squad recently posted its list of the "The seven coolest geeks on television." I think this is a fun idea (and I'm all for supporting geekdom!) but none of the geeks are women! This may be because, frankly, there are fewer female geeks than male ones on TV; women on TV are supposed to be sexy or not exist at all, whereas there is more wiggle room for men to exhibit a range of behavior.

However, I think I am not alone in loving a smart — even geeky — woman. So here are my seven coolest female geeks on TV (in alphabetical order, because I am that geeky):

Samantha Bee from The Daily ShowBee's reporting on everything from pop culture to politics presents a character who is so earnest about her (faulty) expertise I always wonder how she manages to keep a straight face on-camera. It takes a smart woman to pull off deluded with Bee's panache.

Watch a hilarious clip of her reporting on whether America is ready for a Mormon president after the jump: … continue reading
