Gina GershonGina Gershon and Mary McCormack head for BroadwayUPDATED POST: This post was first published on Friday. But there's new news. Read on! Last week, the rumor mill had Sarah Jessica Parker starring as one of the fiancées in the madcap comedy Boeing-Boeing — she was to play the Italian air hostess. Given that she has some solid Broadway history and even more interesting Off-Broadway history, that could have been fun casting. However, it seems the rumor mill was not correct this time. Alas. The latest casting news is not exactly depressing, though — Gina Gershon will be the Italian assistente di bordo.
You may know her better as Corky.
Gershon doesn't have a lot of Broadway history — just a stint as Sally Bowles in Cabaret. But apparently she was good. I almost wish Boeing-Boeing was a musical so I could see her sing live. (Although I suspect it would be different than this Prey for Rock 'n' Roll excerpt.) The other actress recently cast in Boeing-Boeing is Mary McCormack (West Wing, K Street), as the German flight attendant. … continue reading Submitted on March 3, 2008 at 2:03 pm Paula Marshall: perpetual guest starI have a problem with Paula Marshall.
Well, actually, I have a problem with directors and producers and casting directors who haven't found a way to put Marshall on the screen week after week. I want to see more of her — in every sense of the phrase.
I had high hopes for Cupid, a witty 1998 comedy starring Marshall and Jeremy Piven. … continue reading Submitted on March 3, 2008 at 10:00 am Will we love Hilary Swank's "P.S." or write it off?Two-time Academy Award winner Hilary Swank has a new film opening this Friday: P.S. I Love You.
That sounds so cute, but P.P.S. that's what worries me. Why, oh why, do so many Oscar-winning actors immediately turn their professional attentions to the supernatural, or superhero, or save-the-world teacher, or in this case pseudo-paranormal tripe, after receiving that famous golden statue? Are they so blinded by its shiny little bald head that their vision is impaired to the point that they can't see how poorly scripted many of these followup projects are? Or how sappy the concepts are? Or how vapid and cliché the stories can be? Whatever it is, it sure does happen often. Charlize Theron — Aeon Flux? Halle Berry — Catwoman? Nicole Kidman — Birth? The Stepford Wives? Bewitched? Kevin Spacey — K-PAX? Yikes! … continue reading Submitted on December 19, 2007 at 3:06 pm Gina Gershon rocks, or at least tries toI kind of enjoyed Prey for Rock and Roll. Come on, admit it: You did too. A little bit, right? Especially when Gina Gershon was acting really gay. It's hard not to enjoy that just a tad. In one of those ill-considered instances of life-imitating-pseudo-art, yesterday Gershon released an album called In Search of Cleo. The NewNowNext blog has the scoop.
I don't know about this. She seems like a rock star, but she just isn't. Something's missing. And the "Cleo" of the album title is her cat, which is not a rock-star-ish move at all. Neither is the fact that the CD is, and I quote, "beautifullly packaged in a digipak design that has a 12 page booklet with both lyrics handwritten and original illustrations by Gina." You can even pay extra for an autographed copy. Do I detect a hint of desperation, or is it just amateurism? The whole thing — especially the cover photo — seems like it's right out of a Christopher Guest mockumentary. In Search of Cleo was released yesterday (on iTunes, eMusic and the usual other places), and so far the buzz is not exactly positive. I hate to say it, Gina, but looking good in headbanger accoutrements doesn't mean you can actually rock.
Here's the video for "Watch Over Me," in which Gershon sort of sounds like a drunken, congested Chrissie Hynde: … continue reading Submitted on September 5, 2007 at 3:13 pm Gina Gershon likes Jennifer Tilly's skin -- almost as much as she likes breakfastThere's a lot to love about Gina Gershon. First, Bound — and that could really be last, too, because Corky is the ultimate in hotness.
But then Gershon just kept doing cool things, like Showgirls, which is so bad, it's good; Prey for Rock and Roll, in which she played a lesbian again, but this time one with a guitar; and Ugly Betty, in which she shows her comedic skill and thus becomes even sexier. (I'm ignoring her new role in Rescue Me for the moment, because I don't like to think of her making out with Denis Leary). Gershon is now showing her brainy side, having co-written a book for young adults, Camp Creepy Time. She's also back on the big screen in Delirious, which has screened at various film festivals and is finally getting a limited U.S. release in August. In the new issue of Entertainment Weekly, Gershon takes the "Pop Culture Personality Test" and gives us even more to love. Here are some highlights: … continue reading Submitted on June 19, 2007 at 2:52 pm |
