Top 10 women of poker — give 'em a hand!

Several months ago, AfterEllen.com reader Teema suggested a post on the women of poker. Once I started looking into it, I got a little intimidated by how many female poker pros are out there. But now Casino City Times has listed the "Top 10 Women of Poker," giving me a place to start, and guess who popped up? Ms. "Shot at Love" herself, Tila Tequila.

At No. 9 on the list, Tequila is credited with using her celebrity to promote online gaming. I'm not sure if Tila Casino is a good gambling site or not, since online gaming is illegal in Texas and I would never break Texas law. But maybe her poker experience explains why Tequila chose Bobby over Dani. I mean, a straight always beats two of a kind. Sorry.

Erica Schoenberg, No. 8, caused a blip on my gaydar. Especially after I read that the former model also was a professional volleyball player, kickboxing instructor and personal trainer. She's even won a math championship. (Not that math skills have anything to do with sexual orientation. I just thought it was cool.)

But, alas, Schoenberg only has eyes for French poker pro David Benyamine. I still wouldn't mind watching her lose at strip poker. Which she does on the Carmen Electra Strip Poker DVD. (Sorry, you'll have to find those screen shots yourself.) … continue reading

Fifty and fabulous in 2008

One of my childhood memories is a time at my cousin's 12th birthday party when I thoughtfully said, "Twelve is such a ripe old age." I don't know what led to that pronouncement, but I remember it often, even several multiples of 12 later. Age is like that. Each milestone seems far away, then one day you realize that a lot of them are behind you. It's not a bad thing — older really is better — it's just surprising. A few weeks ago, one of America's favorite children reached one of those milestones when Caroline Kennedy turned 50.

Kennedy certainly has accomplished a lot in her adulthood, but to many of us, she always will be JFK's little girl. And "Sweet Caroline." … continue reading

She Made Me Watch This!: "Love on the Side" and the 6 Gayest Non-Gay Teen Movies

Lori and I are back with another weekly video blog, and this time we have a name for it: "She Made Me Watch It!", which was the most popular of the 110 suggestions you all made last week ("Lori doesn't listen, and Sarah doesn't care" was a close second :). Thanks for the assist!

We've decided to break up the video blog into segments moving forward, to make it easier for you to watch us ramble on only about the topics you're interested in. So here goes...

Review of Love On the Side (2004)
First up, a review of the new-ish lesbian movie you've probably never heard of, Love on the Side (aka Deluxe Combo Platter), starring Marla Sokoloff (The Practice), Jennifer Tilly (Bound) and Monika Schnarre (Beastmaster). In this romantic comedy, all the guys fall over the hot new woman in town, Linda (Schnarre), who is secretly gay and only interested in Eve (Sokoloff), a waitress pining for a local guy who only has eyes for Linda, etc. Does Linda get the girl? Does Eve wear sensible shoes? Does Jennifer Tilly deliver another over-the-top performance? Watch it and find out! (But don't worry, we don't spoil the ending.)

Here's the DVD cover for the movie (the lesbian is the blonde in front):

Gina Gershon likes Jennifer Tilly's skin -- almost as much as she likes breakfast

There's a lot to love about Gina Gershon. First, Bound — and that could really be last, too, because Corky is the ultimate in hotness.

But then Gershon just kept doing cool things, like Showgirls, which is so bad, it's good; Prey for Rock and Roll, in which she played a lesbian again, but this time one with a guitar; and Ugly Betty, in which she shows her comedic skill and thus becomes even sexier. (I'm ignoring her new role in Rescue Me for the moment, because I don't like to think of her making out with Denis Leary).

Gershon is now showing her brainy side, having co-written a book for young adults, Camp Creepy Time. She's also back on the big screen in Delirious, which has screened at various film festivals and is finally getting a limited U.S. release in August.

In the new issue of Entertainment Weekly, Gershon takes the "Pop Culture Personality Test" and gives us even more to love. Here are some highlights: … continue reading
