Piper Perabo

When bad movies happen to good actresses

Over the weekend, while lazily flipping the channels, I stopped on some dragon movie and before I could click away, a familiar face caught my eye. Is that? Could that? Hey, that's Piper Perabo. Yes, indeed, it was Piper and she was starring in George and the Dragon, a 2004 movie loosely based on the Crusades-era legend of a knight who slew a dragon to save a princess.

I ended up watching the last third of the film, not because it was any good but because I kept being astonished by who popped up next. Not only was Piper in the film but so was Patrick Swayze, James Purefoy, Michael Clarke Duncan and Tony and Golden Globe-winning actress Joan Plowright. Geez, did they all lose a bet to the director?

Which, of course, got me thinking. How many other good actresses have bad films lurking on their resumes? And by bad, I'm not just talking bombs or flops, and I'm not talking early work when they were desperate to be in anything. Instead I'm talking the "I'm pretty famous, but I've still got to pay the rent" kind of bad. These are the movies they clearly made for the paycheck. These are the movies they hope no one will notice. So let's point them out and laugh … in a nice way. … continue reading

Piper Perabo explores “reasons to be pretty”

Earlier this week, after noting that two actresses reasonably well-known for playing lesbian and bisexual characters would be playing two of the three flight attendants in the upcoming Broadway revival of Boeing-Boeing, I speculated that Piper Perabo, who’s also known in certain circles for her lesbian and bisexual roles, might play the third.

Now, I was just picking her name out of the air because I associate her with lesbian/bi roles. But it turns out she was not such a bad pick because she will, in fact, be on the New York stage in just a few months time! (Thanks, BQ, for that tip.)

Perabo will not be joining Gina Gershon and Mary McCormack on Broadway, but she will be starring in the Neil Labute’s reasons to be pretty at the Lucille Lortel Theatre. The show is set to open June 2 and run until July 15.  … continue reading

Drew plays a Chihuahua, and Salma's involved

Get your Chihuahua jokes ready, because AfterEllen.com Hottie No. 42, Drew Barrymore, has been cast as voice of Chloe, a Beverly Hills Chihuahua, in Disney's upcoming live-action animal feature South of the Border. The film is directed by Raja Gosnell, who has previous experience with Drew and dogs (Never Been Kissed, Scooby Doo).

In South of the Border, Chloe, who is used to being carted around in a purse, gets lost on her family's Mexican vacation. According to the Hollywood Reporter, she then "must rely on her friends to help her get back home."

Those friends include Salma Hayek (Hottie No. 9), who plays Chloe's spiritual guide and helps her "find her true heritage." … continue reading

Because there are so many hot women in it

Because I Said So opens this weekend, featuring Lauren Graham, Diane Keaton, Piper Perabo, and Mandy Moore in the same movie. It's like Ocean's 11 for women!

Make that more like Ocean's 12, unfortunately--the reviews are so bad they make Smokin' Aces look like an Oscar-worthy meditation on violence.

But seriously, how can you resist this:

or this:

I don't care how bad the reviews are, I'm going to see this when it comes out on DVD. Or ends up on Lifetime, whichever comes first.

On training with a dominatrix, meeting the press, and love at first sight.
Piper Perabo falls for British beauty Lena Headey in this new romantic drama.
A well-made if depressing lesbian teen drama.
