Comedy

And now, a little something for the ladies

If you haven't experienced the magic that is Flight of the Conchords, I suggest you utilize a search engine pronto. This New Zealand-based duo (Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement) are hilarious and catchy with their comedy/music styling, which has garnered them their own television series on HBO as well as two albums on Sub Pop Records.

While their self-titled show is about them trying to become famous, in reality they are finally becoming a hit in the States. They recently released a video for their '70s-inspired single, "Ladies of the World," which is a song dedicated to every single one of us out there, whether we are "ugly, skanky or small."

I like their advocation of soldiers putting down their weapons and instead picking up a woman, and "brunettes not fighter jets." While you probably won't want to take them up on their offer of making love to you ("it's the least we can do"), you'll appreciate that some dudes want to "show you some gratitude." … continue reading

Dinah 2008 Logo Comedy Cocktail Hour: Bridget McManus

AfterEllen.com's own Bridget McManus was spreading herself pretty thin at The Dinah this year. As if accosting people on the red carpet, showing off her splits technique during the improv, and singing a vaguely inappropriate "sorority" song to Sarah Warn weren't enough, she also performed at the Logo Comedy Cocktail Hour.

There Bridget regaled the crowd with a couple of memorable ditties (accompanied by her trusty tambourine), shared some treasured family memories, and paid tribute to her favorite restaurant, Red Lobster.

Don't forget to check out the rest of our Dinah coverage, including stand-up by Julie Goldman, Kate McKinnon, and Liz Feldman, and improv by the AfterEllen.com vloggers.

If you live near L.A. and still can't get enough of Bridget after all the Dinah videos, you can see her live and in person as the main event in her upcoming show "Tall Dark and Random" on Thursday May 8th at The M Bar in Los Angeles; buy tickets here before the show sells out.

Rachel Dratch will be funny for food

The woman who created Debbie Downer is a little down in real life. Seems Rachel Dratch hasn't found much work since she left Saturday Night Live two years ago. In fact, when asked what she'd been up to last month, her response was telling: “I know you're supposed to come up with fake stuff you're doing. But honestly, I'm not doing much. [Downtime] is starting to get old. I'm starting to go crazy. I'm ready for a job.”

I've always thought Dratch was pretty great on SNL, mainly for her willingness to look crazy and do anything for a laugh. Besides Debbie Downer, she created such memorable characters as Boston teen Denise “Zazu” McDonough and the adorable love child of Angelina Jolie and her brother. See what I was saying about going for it?

I also loved how she could crack the cast up, particularly as Debbie Downer. … continue reading
