The Lo-Down

The Lo-Down Episode 2.8

When we shot this week's week's Lo-Down, Sarah P. and I decided to shake things up. We're retiring our fake news format because, to be honest, we haven't had the time to write up the fake news segments! We may do more fake news in the future, but for now, we're going to focus on the Crock P.O.C. — and, beginning in April, we'll be vlogging about Battlestar Galactica!

But I'm getting ahead of myself. This week we deliver a Special Bookish Episode, in which we talk about how much we love Sarah Waters' novels, as well as our (somewhat geeky) attraction to Victorian historicals. Then in the Crock P.O.C. we ramble on about hip-hop in lesbian clubs, vegetarians, being mistaken for porn stars and other random topics suggested by lyndsaykay, sati_49, Wendy and our own demented minds.

(Also, if you notice a strange humming noise at some points during the vlog, that's because there was construction going on next door. We don't know what machine makes that humming noise, but hopefully it's not too distracting.)

We'll be taking a few weeks off between now and the premiere of BSG since we'll both be out of town (separately, and for different reasons), thus creating scheduling challenges for The Lo-Down. But fear not! In the meantime, I'll be hunting down a Starbuck action figure. 'Cause no BSG vlog would be complete without one.

The Lo-Down Episode 2.7

This week, Sarah P. and I bring you a Special Bitchy Edition of The Lo-Down. Struck with a massive amount of orneriness, we decided to channel that into a (hopefully funny) vlog about the art of bitching — because bitching is a close cousin to ranting!

We count down the Top 10 Desirable Qualities in a Bitch, and then dive into the Crock P.O.C. to discuss how to bitch constructively, that horrible BBC show Dawn Goes Lesbian, why Malinda hates voicemail, and many other bitchtastic topics. So if you're having an annoying Monday, join in and bitch about it in the comments!

The Lo-Down: Episode 2.6

After taking last week off, Sarah P. and I are back with, um, sort of a disorganized and rambly Lo-Down. We know we promised an "on location" Lo-Down but, as I explain in our apologetic intro, we were too busy eating and napping to, uh, work. Therefore, we bring you this slacker edition of The Lo-Down, in which we didn't have time to come up with any fake news, but do devote almost 40 minutes to the Crock P.O.C. We ramble on about topics such as Tyra vs. Oprah, bisexuals and lesbians' views of them, soap on a rope, and Sidney Tamiia Poitier in Knight Rider, as well as continue to discuss Sarah P.'s irritation with public transit.

Thanks to LilyJadeRose and Wendy for topic suggestions, and keep 'em coming! Next week we'll be back to our usual newsy shenanigans.

The Lo-Down Episode 2.5

In this week's episode, Sarah P. and I give you a (fake) follow-up on the gaydar detection system's unintended side effects, welcome Officer Crenshaw of the Lesbian Fashion Police (LFP), and tackle such hot Crock P.O.C. topics as what kind of lesbian movie we'd make, how Sarah P. knows I'm gay, cats vs. dogs, and interracial dating on The L Word (thanks to Lyndsey for the idea). And more bedtime stories!

This episode seems to be quite pets-focused, in fact, as you'll notice we get a surprise visit from Stuart the Cat. As always, send us your Crock P.O.C. suggestions in the comments.

The Lo-Down: Episode 2.4

This week, Sarah P. and I bring you updates/rants on hot lesbian careers (thanks to viv24 for the suggestion!), the LU's plans to endorse a presidential candidate, a most unique sofa, Cashmere Mafia's annoying lesbian bridal shower, and Lucy Liu dating an Asian guy. Plus, a musical visit from out American Idol reject, Alex Bull, and Sarah and I take bedtime stories to the next (logical) step.

I was struck by the typo bug again this week — you'll notice that the opening title says this vlog is Episode 2.3, but actually, it's Episode 2.4. You're in the right place if you're looking for all new (fake) news from me and Sarah P. As always, send us your Crock P.O.C. suggestions in the comments!

The Lo-Down: Episode 2.3

This week, Sarah P. and I bring you late-breaking (fake) news on lesbian bed death, fashion, tofu, more Lesbian/Woman, and an interview with world-renowned psychic Madam Sophia Moonstar.

In this week's Crock P.O.C. we discuss good and bad lies, when Malinda was "butch" and whether she should get a tattoo, and who we'd put in our hot new lesbian rock band. As always, if you have suggestions for future Crock P.O.C. topics, let us know in the comments!

The Lo-Down: Episode 2.2

In The Lo-Down's second fake news show, Sarah P. and I report on Paris Hilton's L Word partying, heterosexual WBNA players, and advances in gaydar techologies. Plus, we pay homage to our sisters in the struggle by reading from the 1972 lesbian feminist classic, Lesbian/Woman. (Seriously, you've gotta read this book!)

In this week's Crock P.O.C. we delve into such hot topics as ... well, you'll just have to watch to find out! Thanks to everyone who contributed ideas last week for our vlog; we even incorporated some of them (in slightly modified format) into this week's episode (specifically, thanks to lashun, spotticus and Ottoman Empress). If you have suggestions for future Crock P.O.C. topics or for (fake) celezbrity guests, let us know in the comments!

The Lo-Down: Episode 2.1 "Pilot"

Welcome back to The Lo-Down! Sarah P. and I are pleased to welcome you to what we are calling "Season 2" of our DIY video blog. Prepare yourselves, 'cause things are changing up in 2008, and we hope you like it.

We thought we'd take the aspects of our vlog that we really enjoyed (improvising "reenactments" of fake scenes, bantering with each other) and combine them with our love for, well, fake news. Yes, I admit it: We are shamelessly ripping off The Daily Show to bring you the news ... as we see it! That means it's fake.

Here's what you can expect in the "Pilot" episode:

  • Headlines — These are fake headlines, people!
  • A fake interview with Lesly "Sister Spirit" Smyth, president of the Lesbian Union.
  • The Crock P.O.C. — Like "Hot Topics," this is a crock pot of hot-button issues, some of them a load of crock, some of them all about P.O.C.'s. (For example, we discuss why we think Lucy Liu and Queen Latifah should be lesbians.) We have opinions on everything!

The Lo-Down: "A Shot at Love" Season Finale

Like many of you, Sarah P. and I were bitter and pissed off after the season finale of A Shot at Love With Tila Tequila. Not that we didn't know what was coming to us — I did, after all, predict that Bobby was going to win.

Nevertheless, that didn't stop us from ranting about the following in Part 1:

  • Why Dani should have won! And why that is a blessing in disguise.
  • The show's annoying return to the men vs. women idiocy of its early episodes — groan.
  • Why it was totally unfair and ridiculous for Dani to be forced to wear makeup and that bizarre flesh-colored tube top.
  • How much we loved Dani's departing outfit. If she's really starting a "futch" clothing line, we're buying it!

In the vlog, I refer to an article by Nicole Kristal that you can read at AlterNet, in case you want to read it too. … continue reading

The Lo-Down: "A Shot at Love" Episode 9 and "Life" Episode 10

I don't know about you guys, but the holidays (and our jam-packed editorial calendar) are making me feel a bit frazzled these days (no, I haven't had any tequila recently), as evidenced by the fact that I started off this episode of The Lo-Down with a typo. This week Sarah P. and I chat about A Shot at Love With Tila Tequila Episode 9, not Episode 8 as it says in the opening title, as well as Episode 10 ("Dig a Hole") of Life. Hey, at least that typo wasn't as bad as this one.

I also took note of your desires to have our vlog available on Daily Motion, so this time, instead of trying to edit our rambling down to 20 minutes, I cut the whole thing in two parts so that you can see them on either Veoh or Daily Motion. Here's what you can look forward to in Part 1: … continue reading

  • Sarah reveals she, too, is actually starting to like Tila. ("Not that much!" Sarah insists.)
  • Ding-dong! The witch Amanda is dead gone! But we will miss her rubber-tastic facial expressions.
  • Dani's in the final two! Malinda and Sarah predict who will actually win a shot at love with Tila.
  • Sarah Shahi gets kissed by a woman on Life, and why that should happen more often.
  • If we were reincarnated, who would we come back as? Which is continued in ...

The Lo-Down: "A Shot at Love" Episodes 7 and 8

Since we skipped A Shot at Love last week to eat turkey and geek out about Battlestar Galactica: Razor, this week on The Lo-Down Sarah P. and I cover two, count 'em, two episodes of the reality show to which I am strangely drawn (Sarah's still not impressed). Luckily, A Shot at Love isn't nearly as complex as Razor, so fitting in two episodes in one vlog wasn't too hard. I even had time to give an impromptu chopstick usage lesson.

In addition to introducing you all to my Chopstick Theory, we discussed the following topics:

  • Why the chocolate pudding challenge, unlike chocolate pudding wrestling, was just not sexy.
  • Domenico's horrible, no good, very bad choice of swimwear.
  • Ryan and Bobby being forced to come out — as dating a bisexual!
  • What Dani (and all firefighters) should do until they are dead or disfigured.
  • Plus, the Tila doll returns to show us just how skilled she is as a pole- and lap-dancer.

Since we covered two episodes this week, we Sarah also came up with two questions for you to ponder: … continue reading

  1. What would Domenico look like as a woman? (My PhotoShop skills are just not good enough here!)
  2. Do all white men have an Asian fetish?

The Lo-Down: Special "Battlestar Galactica: Razor" edition!

Finally after weeks of resisting spoiler leakage (that sounds kinda nasty, doesn't it?), the time has come: The Lo-Down's special Battlestar Galactica: Razor edition! This week, Sarah P. and I took a break from Tila Land to take you on an intergalactic journey of epic proportions ... complete with a special Razor-themed opening sequence with uber-dramatic music. (I couldn't resist.)

If you haven't yet seen Razor and/or if you are a BSG newbie, I suggest you read my review of the episode to get the full back story. Then you will be less confused when you watch our vlog, in which we attempt to cover all of the following topics:

  • Why we love Battlestar Galactica (childhood space fantasies and fake military included).
  • Grace Park's turn as a lesbian teen in Canadian TV series Edgemont.
  • How many men in the original series became women in the reimagined one (several!).
  • How Admiral Cain differs from Commander Adama, and why it's important.
  • Why Starbuck should be a lesbian (obviously).

Plus, Sarah P. has fun with knives. Watch it now: … continue reading

The Lo-Down: Dani Update and a WOC TV Guide

This week on The Lo-Down I admit to a shocking truth: I am starting to like A Shot at Love. (I know, I know!) Sarah P. doesn't entirely share my perspective on this matter, but that didn't stop us from delivering yet another vlog in which we talk about the MySpace Queen's dating show.

But we didn't only devote our snarky selves to disemboweling MTV's latest reality casualties; we also talked (at length) about women of color on television. Last week we asked you to tell us which women of color make you proud, and your responses made us realize that there are so many women of color out there (really! like over half the globe!) that we can't possibly cover this territory in one top 10 list. There will have to be many!

To start off with, we are presenting you with a list of women of color you can watch on TV, night by night. (Catch them now before they go into reruns because of the WGA strike.) We spent so long talking about them that I had to split up our vlog into two parts: Part 1 focuses on Shot at Love, while Part 2 is our extensive, WOCtastic guide to television. (So those of you who do not share my disturbing interest in Shot at Love can just skip to the WOC TV Guide.)

Here's what you can see in Part 1: … continue reading

The Lo-Down: All Dani, All the Time

This week on Shot at Love, something miraculous happened: Tila kissed Dani! And it was hot!

In honor of this momentous moment, Sarah P. and I focused pretty much all our attention this week on Dani — our favorite Shot at Love contestant, as well as Sarah Shahi's Dani Reese on Life.

Among the subjects that came up: … continue reading

The Lo-Down: "Tila Tequila" Episode 4 and Why We Love "Life"

Last week on The Lo-Down, Sarah P. and I asked you all whether we should talk about something other than Miss Bisexual MySpace, and most of you responded with a resounding "Hell yeah!" So this week, in addition to covering the shenanigans on Shot at Love, we also talk about our new favorite police procedural, Life, aka Sarah Shahi Is a Hot Cop.

Sarah P. and I were also floored by the amazing responses you gave to her question: Why do people have a problem with butches? So many of you answered with thoughtful, considerate answers that we both felt lots of warm fuzzies for the intelligence of AfterEllen.com's readers. Go you! To thank you all, I thought you might enjoy this belated Happy Halloween treat:

Yes, that's Sarah as the cowardly lion (from The Wizard of Oz) terrorizing an innocent little schoolgirl boy scout. (I came with a boy scout troop, but they all seem to have abandoned me to my fate.) … continue reading
