Fiona Apple

It's "Criminal" that Fiona Apple ranks lower than Shakira in sexiness

When Nerve.com releases a new list, I'm generally in agreement with most of their picks. They do their best to be homo-inclusive on the site, and have included several great scenes from film, television and overall parts of pop culture when they compile Top 50 Sex Scenes (High Art ranked fairly high).

However, I'm a little disappointed in their newest list: The 50 Sexiest Music Videos. It's not all for lack of lesbian content (God-Des and She's "Lick It" and Joan Jett's "I Love Rock and Roll" both made it in); it's simply because it sucks. Half of the videos were most likely chosen simply based on the following: "Hey Nerve.com staff — name a music video!" (Beastie Boys' "Fight For Your Right to Party"? Sexy? No. Just, no.)

I understand, Nerve; it's difficult to make a definitive list when there are so many sexy music videos made, but you just made so many missteps with this list. But I can appreciate the fact that 49 of the 50 are made sexy because the featured symbolization of "sex" in the video is female (the sole male video is not even the one by George Michael — it's D'Angelo's "How Does it Feel?") But, less than half are actually performed by women. … continue reading

Halloween music, all mixed up

Ever since Malinda told us about SpotDJ over the summer, I've been spending far too much time making mix tapes. I think part of the appeal is that when I was of mix-tape age, the technology was not friendly to such an endeavor. Making any kind of compilation required finding a stereo that had both a turntable and cassette recorder, then painstakingly finding songs on records and recording them to cassette. You young'uns have it so easy. And yes, I did have to walk to school in the snow.

Anyway, what better reason to make a mix tape than Halloween? I started with the intention of doing an all-female mix. For reasons I don't care to explore, the first song I thought of was "The End" by Nico. And Pat Benatar's "Hell Is for Children." When did Benatar start looking like this?

Bjork is always kind of scary, and "Ancestors" is a great Halloween song. And nothing says horror like "Rawhead and Bloody Bones" by Siouxsie & the Banshees.

But when I went to make the mix, I hit a snag. Most of the songs I wanted weren't available via SpotDJ. And honestly, could you imagine a Halloween mix without "Thriller?" So, I decided to fill in with songs loved by a woman, namely me. … continue reading

Hey, you, I want to be at Girlfrenzy

I haven’t been to an all-day concert in years. Eight years, to be exact, when the final Lilith Fair came to town. The sun, the music, the women in tank tops ... it was lesbian heaven. Now, in what’s being described as a latter-day Lilith Fair, Sheryl Crow, Avril Lavigne and Fiona Apple are teaming up for a new all-female musical event called Girlfrenzy.

Girlfrenzy is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine, Calif. It features an all-day slate of well-known and up-and-coming women artists including Colbie Caillat, Sara Bareilles and Antigone Rising. A portion of the profits will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The concert finds Crow, a breast cancer survivor, returning to music after a short break following the adoption of her son, four-month-old Wyatt Steven. Before that she was touring for the environment with Laurie David, extolling the use of one square of TP per restroom visit. So if you see her, congratulate her on the adoption — but you might want to pass on the handshake.

For Lavigne, one of Lori’s Hot Rocker Chicks, Girlfrenzy will be her first U.S. show after three October concerts in Mexico. Lavigne has had an up-and-down year. The Best Damn Thing hit No. 1 on U.S. charts in April, but she’s been busy defending herself against allegations of plagiarism. You know, I’d like to know for sure who wrote "Girlfriend" so I can curse the right person when I can’t sleep because the refrain is stuck in my head. … continue reading
