News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

Ali Larter

"What Is Sexy?" — a secret I wish they'd kept

I don't frequent Victoria's Secret stores. I don't watch those lame Victoria's Secret TV specials. I don't peruse the Victoria's Secret catalog and never have, not even when one of my college friends insisted it was the perfect study break.

So, fine; I didn't really expect to like the 2008 What Is Sexy? list, which was released by Victoria's Secret earlier today. But nor did I expect to be thoroughly confused by it. You've probably seen headlines about the most ridiculous one: Ryan Seacrest made the list for "sexiest smile." Ryan Seacrest? I think they must have accidentally copied and pasted from their What Is Icky? list.

But let's talk about the women on the list, starting with the one that really made me say "Whaaaaat?" in a Jill Bennett–esque way:

Sexiest Mom: Victoria Beckham

Uh. Did they mean Sexiest Person You Always Forget Is a Mom, Because, Really, Since When Can Mannequins Reproduce? I can think of many better candidates. Salma Hayek, for one.

Sexiest Actress: Eva Mendes … continue reading

Ali Larter: Straight girls need U-Hauls too

Ali Larter, lately known for her Resident Evil: Extinction success, as well as her role on an obscure television show you may have heard of (let's call it Heroes), is featured in the October issue of that highly esteemed home of journalistic integrity, Cosmopolitan.

In the interview, Larter notes, "I told my boyfriend after three weeks that I wanted to marry him and that we could do it tomorrow." Well, I for one enjoy knowing that Larter is more or less living the heterosexual version of the age-old lesbian stereotype (or tradition, depending on who you ask).

SHE MADE ME WATCH THIS! September 22, 2007

With so many interesting new fall TV shows debuting now, Lori and I decided to structure our vlog a little differently moving forward. Rather than a lengthy review of each show, we're just going to hit the highlights of the week in TV and film, organized into the following categories:

Rapid-fire Reviews (kinda like The McLaughlin Report, but gay)
Gaying up Primetime (the best lesbian moment that wasn't)
Who thought that was a good idea? (the rant)
The Casting Couch (cool new film or TV casting news)
AfterEllen.com Soundbites (funny comments on the site about TV and film)
What to Watch (our pick of what's coming up on TV and at the theaters)

Among the TV topics we cover this week are the premieres of Top Model, K-Ville, and Survivor: China; our love of Bones; the revamped Bionic Woman pilot; and Gossip Girl's lesbian moment that wasn't.

We also discuss Zoe Saldana in the new Star Trek movie, what's wrong with the trailer for the upcoming movie The Kingdom, and why Lori plans to see Resident Evil: Extinction (opening this weekend).

Plus, a special appearance by Sydney Bristow, and Lori gets in trouble for revealing how much I like the cheesy ballet movie Center Stage (2000).

TV alerts: "Gossip Girl," "ANTM" and other premieres, plus Ellen and Ali on late

The CW's new show Gossip Girl starts tonight at 9:00/8:00c. It sure has been getting a lot of press lately, possibly simply because of its slightly salacious title. We'll have a mini review right here on the blog later this week, so watch it tonight if you want to form your own opinion before we slant your perspective. Oh, and right before that (at 8:00/7:00c), watch America's Next Top Model so you can figure out what Dara, Karman and Jill are talking about in their video blog.

Other fall premieres tonight include the misspelled 'Til Death (8:30/7:30c on Fox), the new Kelsey Grammer vehicle Back to You (8:00/7:00c on Fox) and the controversial Kid Nation (8:00 on CBS).

Meanwhile, two girls we like to gossip about stop by the late-night talk shows:

Ellen DeGeneres will be on Late Night With David Letterman on CBS. And you can watch Ellen and Dave now on the Late Show website.

And Ali Larter will be on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno on NBC. She'll probably be promoting Resident Evil: Extinction, in which she looks like this (yow):

SHE MADE ME WATCH THIS! The 2007 Emmys

Ellen wears a weird outfit! Katherine Heigl blames her mom! Tina Fey thanks the gays! Kyra Sedgwick, Glenn Close, and Mary Louise Parker form a gang and offer to jump in anyone who will create more good roles for women on TV! (Where do I sign up?!)

In this very special Emmy's edition of She Made Me Watch This! Lori and I give our take on the night's fashion winners and losers, best acceptance speech, and worst musical number; ask what Joely Fisher and Brad Garrett were thinking with that tasteless banter; and throw in a bonus rant about Fox censoring Sally Field. All this and more below! … continue reading

"Resident Evil: Extinction": Milla, Ashanti and Ali deliver us

A while ago, I blogged about the poster and teaser trailer for Resident Evil: Extinction. I just watched the full theatrical trailer, and I have to say, this movie might kick zombie butt. Rather, Milla Jovovich might (let's just say "will"):

Having sweated through all of the Resident Evil video games, I'll admit I'm compelled by the idea of a biochemical weapon that turns people into zombies. The whole military-industrial complex angle always fascinated me. It seems particularly timely now, but maybe I'm just paranoid.

Anyway, never mind the social commentary: Look at all those zombies! … continue reading

"Resident Evil: Extinction" posters: Thrilling in many ways

When I went to NewFest (New York's LGBT film fest) last month, one of the gayest things I saw was the Resident Evil: Extinction poster in the lobby. I mean, hello:

I'm not a big Milla Jovovich fan, and I don't even know if I'll see this movie — I'm still getting over the death of Michelle Rodriguez's character in the first Resident Evil flick. But I do enjoy the posters. Here's another, just released last week: … continue reading
