AfterEllen.com at the "3Way" Premiere Party

Last weekend, I attended the Hollywood screening of the new lesbian web series 3Way with a bunch of AfterEllen.com-related folks. There were lots of celebrities at the premiere, from AfterEllen.com favorites such as Christina Cox (Blood Ties, Better Than Chocolate), Mandy Musgrave and Gabrielle Christian (South of Nowhere), to women I'd never met but always wanted to, such as Kelly Hu — the hot mutant assassin in X2 — and Kristy Swanson, who played the first Buffy Summers in the campy movie version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

But the best part of the evening? Sarah made the mistake of giving Bridget and me a microphone and camera and then setting us loose among the celebrities.

Which means she has only herself to blame for what happened next.

Yes, spankings occurred and a marriage proposal was made. It's true, I did offer to give Kelly Hu lessons in Lesbian 101, and Bridget did incite an argument between Mandy, Jill and Cathy Shim over who would sleep with whom. Also, Bridget described her kissing technique in detail, we played a naughty word-association game with the entire cast of South of Nowhere, and everyone flirted with everyone else pretty much the whole time.

But really, would you expect anything different from one-third of "The Terrible Three" and the woman who shoots her vlog with a different woman in her bed each week?

Watch it here now — because you'll never see celebrity party coverage like this on E! or Entertainment Tonight!

And before you ask: no, there's not actually a contest to win a three-way with Bridget and Jill. (Dammit!) Sarah still makes us adhere to some standards.

VIDEO: Power Premiere Red Carpet Interviews

I asked Logo's Ashley Kaplan (whom I like to call the Shane of the Logo offices) to bring a camera to the Power Premiere last weekend and interview the lesbian celebrities and lesbian celebrity icons for AfterEllen.com, and she kindly obliged, despite knowing almost nothing about most of these women since she doesn't watch much TV.

In this fun video she put together for us, we learn things like:

  • What Guin Turner's working on now
  • Michelle Paradise's favorite lesbian moment of '07 (besides launching her show)
  • Thea Gill's favorite scene on Queer as Folk
  • Why Daniela Sea identified with Jo on The Facts of Life
  • Renee O'Connor's new TV show gig in 2008
  • Why Mandy Musgrave loves the lesbian community
  • Jill Bennett's first crush

Spashley fans rock the "South of Nowhere" Appreciation Conference

As Malinda mentioned in her Best. Lesbian. Week. Ever. column last friday, AfterEllen.com Editor-in-Chief Sarah Warn and I were invited to speak on a panel at the South of Nowhere Appreciation Conference in Los Angeles this weekend. The conference was designed to get viewers of the show together for the first time to share their experiences, as well as allow the SoN audience to show the cast and creators of the show some love.

South of Nowhere stars Mandy Musgrave, Gabrielle Christian, Maeve Quinlan, Eileen Boylan, Matt Cohen, Quentin Prescott Price, and Valery Ortiz attended, as did former SoN executive producer Nancylee Myatt and SoN writers Paige Bernhardt and Chad Fiveash.

The audience was a rambunctious group of SoN devotees — or more to the point, Spashley devotees. Every time Mandy or Gabrielle entered the conference room (or were even rumored to be within 50 feet of the conference room!) the fans erupted in cheers. And yes, the attendees were almost all female.

The panel that Sarah and I sat on was devoted to SoN's impact on the media and how it fits into the larger context of lesbian representation in pop culture. We were pleasantly surprised by the strong turnout for the panel (it was celebrity-free, so we didn't know how many people it would draw) and audience members had some great questions and suggestions for ways we could increase the Spashley love on AfterEllen.com. Sarah said a lot of insightful things and I mostly just made the occasional wiseass remark. Yep, just another day at the office. … continue reading
