News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

Liv Tyler

Gaming is for girls

Quiz time: What do I have in common with these women?

Is it:

a) A perfect complexion
b) A perfect smile
c) A bazillion dollars
d) A Nintendo DS Lite

Ding! Ding! Ding! Just like Liv Tyler, America Ferrera and Carrie Underwood, I own a Nintendo DS Lite.

Late last month Nintendo announced that it would be making Metallic Rose a regular part of the DS Lite color palette, and adding a new two-toned Crimson and Black version to the mix. The commercial campaign kicked off last week with the above-mentioned triumvirate of female celebrity support. I have to say: I really like the commercials.

Carrie Underwood's thirty second spot features her lounging on her tour bus in flip flops, playing some inexplicable game where she pets a virtual dog while her actual dog watches over her shoulder. I'm not sure I understand the point of it because the only thing Underwood says is, "Cute!" and "Neat!" Maybe its a game for children who aren't yet ready to put down their hand held game consoles and take responsibility for a real live pet? Either way: cute. … continue reading

Meet the supergirlfriends of summer

They say behind every great man is a great woman. While we AfterEllen.commers might take issue with that first gender, the saying definitely holds true in the to big-budget superhero movies coming soon to a theater near you. In fact, USA Today recently interviewed the trio of Gwyneth Paltrow, Liv Tyler and Maggie Gyllenhaal, or — as I like to call them — the supergirlfriends of summer.

All three actors are more known for their dramatic or independent film work, and all three are now stepping into mainstream comic book movie heroine roles. They're the superheroes' girlfriends/potential love interests: Gwyneth as Pepper Potts in Iron Man, Liv as Betty Ross in The Incredible Hulk, and Maggie as Rachel Dawes in The Dark Knight.

Kissing to be clever (aka "Liv Tyler's Lesbian Regret")

CelebritySpotlight.co.uk recently ran a hilarious quote by Liv Tyler about playing a lesbian (the original source was her interview with Allure Magazine). Actually, the hilarious part was the headline, "Liv Tyler's Lesbian Regret." There is so much you can do with the concept of "lesbian regret," isn't there?

Anyway, Tyler bemoaned the tameness of the kiss scene she did with Kate Hudson a few years ago in Dr. T and the Women.

She said, "Kate plays a woman who is about to get married and she's completely in love with me. We were always so shy about the kissing but in retrospect we were like, 'We so should have just totally made out and tongued each other'. But we never did, we were just too scared to do it." … continue reading

Marriage is driving Alicia Silverstone insane

Alicia Silverstone's new favorite hobby is opening her fridge. No, she hasn't become a binge eater — she's just gone a little loopy since becoming (ugh) a housewife. Marriage to a man will do that to you, I guess.

In a recent interview with Britain's OK! magazine, the star of Clueless gushed, "One of my favorite things to do with my husband is open up the refrigerator ... I'll take everything out of the refrigerator while he turns on the basketball game or the football game or whatever game is on. And I start organizing what needs to be eaten first."

Stars live very different lives from you and me.

With no big hit since forever and looks that don't last indefinitely, you'd think Alicia's time would be better spent pursuing acting jobs, not cataloging her crisper. Call me crazy. … continue reading
