Actors we'll watch in (almost) anything

The good folks at EW.com recently released a list of the "50 Actors We'd Watch in Anything" in two parts. As usual for this type of thing, the list was dominated by men — there were only 18 women listed. But I do have to give them kudos for selecting stellar actors.

Kate Winslet, Rosario Dawson, Joan Cusack and Allison Janney

I actually agreed with the majority of the list. And — wait for it — they even included an out lesbian in Cherry Jones!

Jones with partner Sarah Paulson

Admittedly, I don't get to the movies as often as I'd like. I think I have only actually gotten to the theaters once in the past month. So it might be a stretch to say I'd watch these ladies in "anything." I like to think I have standards in some area of my life. I would prefer to call the list "50 Actors That Would Allow Us to Not Hate Ourselves for Paying $9 to See This Crappy Movie." … continue reading

Julia Stiles signs up to be stalked

When is Julia Stiles finally going to become a superstar?

I mean, the woman is gorgeous, smart and talented. And when she speaks, that low, sexy voice makes me wish she were speaking to me. Saying things I would never repeat in polite company.

I first noticed Stiles in Mona Lisa Smile, in which she played Joan, the bright pre-law student who believed she could have either a family or a career, not both. (Stiles shared her take on the movie in an article for The Guardian.)

The film should have been better than it was, but, as a sucker for sap, I enjoyed it. More importantly, I got what I thought was a glimpse of greatness in Stiles' performance. … continue reading

Michelle Rodriguez reads books, punches no one

Yeah, I can't believe it's headline news either. But TMZ.com busted Michelle Rodriguez earlier this week — exiting a bookstore and sauntering down the street without causing any sort of ruckus. Also, she was walking with a "gal pal," aka another woman in close proximity. Believe it or not, the clip is posted all over celeb websites (watch it here).

So. What did we learn from this?

Um. Maybe, Michelle Rodriguez knows how to read. Wait. Why is this surprising? Because some people expect girls, especially pretty girls, particularly hot young stars, to be illiterate? Or because Rodriguez likes to have a good time and sit down with the occasional book? Surely a mix of the above qualities in one woman isn't that astounding. Just ask Missy Elliott, Aishwarya Rai, or Julia Stiles.

Janeane Garofalo's "Mona Lisa" tears

In the new issue of Entertainment Weekly, Janeane Garofalo describes her worst audition ever. It seems she was up for a role in Mona Lisa Smile. Yes, that well-mannered 2003 movie starring Julia Roberts as a spirited art professor who liberates some 1950s Wellesley girls from their suffocating mores (sadly, not in the way you might hope). Let's just take a moment to appreciate the incongruity of the whole idea. Can you imagine tattooed Janeane strutting down those halls of decorum?

Julia and Julia can't imagine it either:

Actually, Roberts took the time to read with Garofalo at her audition and tried to encourage her, but her vote of confidence had the opposite effect for Janeane. … continue reading

Julia Stiles traps herself in The Bell Jar

Julia Stiles will soon be starring as the original girl, interrupted. The actress has signed on to play Esther Greenwood in a big screen adaptation of Sylvia Plath's iconic novel The Bell Jar. I have to say, I have sky-high hopes for this project.

First, you can't beat the source material. Plath's semi-autobiographical book is a lyrical look at a young woman's descent into disillusionment and depression. Both the work and its author deserve a fitting cinematic tribute beyond Gwyneth Paltrow's tepid Sylvia.
