Michelle Pfeiffer: Do brunettes have more fun?

Michelle Pfeiffer has a new look, and who better to decide whether she should keep it than those of us who adore her?

Pfeiffer, who turns 50 on April 29, tried on a lot of looks last year. She was Velma Von Tussle in Hairspray. … continue reading

Critics' Choice Awards roundup

The Golden Globes have been canceled, but the the writers’ strike didn’t prevent the live broadcast of the Critics' Choice Awards from pressing on last night. But the strike it did have its effects. Many winners noted that they were speaking off the cuff because they wanted to respect the strike and did not write speeches.

Host D.L. Hughley’s commentary was incredibly awkward, and it seemed that all his jokes were about race. Probably the oddest comment of the night for me came when Hughley dubbed Brad Pitt an “honorary black person” for seemingly no reason. And several times Hughley told the crowd that they needed to lighten up and laugh once in a while.

Despite that, there were many bright spots during the evening. For one, it seemed that every two minutes Pitt and AfterEllen.com’s No. 2 hottie, Angelina Jolie, were on the screen, looking just as fabulous as ever.

Additionally, there were some fantastic female winners throughout the evening.

Nikki Blonsky, breakout star of Hairspray, won the award for Best Young Actress.

Blonsky shared the award for Best Acting Ensemble with the rest of the Hairspray cast, which includes Queen Latifah (AfterEllen.com Hot 100 No. 55), Amanda Bynes, Michelle Pfeiffer, Allison Janney, Brittany Snow and, of course, John Travolta in drag. … continue reading

“Grease” may be the word, but let's hope not

Here's the rumor floating all over the entertainment blogosphere: Michelle Pfeiffer has been approached to participate in a remake of Grease.

I have not found any credible information confirming that a Grease remake is in the works; all of the references seem to be based on the same quote, and it's not entirely clear what the original source is. (It might be this, but I'm not completely certain.) Ergo, I feel a little sleazy spreading the rumor based on so little. But, apparently, I will anyway. Here's the quote in question:

"It's a great idea and I hear they would like to get Jessica Simpson for the role of Sandy, she would be good. I would love to play the school principal. She is fun and has some great put-down lines. I think I would like the part now that I have been asked."

I'm hoping this is not true for a number of reasons. First, this quote makes her sound stupid, and I prefer not to view Michelle Pfeiffer as stupid. Actually, it sort of makes her sound translated — as if the original quote was not in English. (Assuming that this quote is not fabricated, I'm hoping it's some paraphrased throwaway aside from a Stardust press thing.)

Second, remaking Grease seems like a bad idea. … continue reading

Queen Latifah is "Trav’lin Light" with new recording

Queen Latifah is one busy royal these days.

She’s on the big screen as Motormouth Maybelle in Hairspray. She’s been on the small screen presenting at the BET awards and earning an Emmy nomination for HBO’s Life Support. She’s executive producer of Wifey, a BET/VH1 drama series about the hip-hop business. She even has her own clothing line. (And the woman does look good in clothes.) … continue reading

"Hairspray": Bringing big and beautiful back?

Hairspray sang and danced its way onto the big screen this past weekend to great reviews and strong box office (No. 3 behind I Now Pronounce You Dumb & Dumber Chuck & Larry and Harry Potter, with the largest opening take for a musical on record). And, according to the Associated Press, its filmmakers hope its success will herald a new acceptance of plus-size women in Hollywood. You hear that, aspiring starlets? You can all stop gorging yourself on ice cubes and Diet Coke, because big is back. If only.

As welcome as the notion may be, I sincerely doubt that Hollywood will begin embracing its Rubenesque side anytime soon. While Nikki Blonsky and Queen Latifah are Hairspray’s beautiful bombshells, they are the curvaceous exceptions to the rule right now. … continue reading

Pfeiffer returns to the big screen in "Hairspray"

Michelle Pfeiffer and the rest of the glad-rag cast of Hairspray hit theaters nationwide on Friday. And the big-gun reviewers The New Yorker, New York magazine, Variety and Ebert and Roeper have all jumped out early and given the movie a collective seal of approval, happily suggesting to moviegoers that the film is a good fun romp on history and on the joy of “camp.”

Not that I don’t care about history or the joy of camp, I do, really, but I was perfectly fine with John Waters' original Hairspray and I’m sensing this version is nowhere near that version of camp. And because I so enjoyed the original version, I'm not all that riled up to shell out, what is it up to now, $800.00 for a single movie ticket without popcorn and a soda? No, what interests me about this movie is that it brought Michelle Pfeiffer out of her professional hiatus. … continue reading

Latifah's hair, star of the "Hairspray" premiere

On Monday, various luminaries attended the premiere of Hairspray in L.A., including the always brilliant Queen Latifah. Latifah plays Motormouth Maybelle, and she was still wearing her character's dazzling blonde hair at the premiere:

Holy platinum pate! And holy, uh, other stuff. Here are some more photos of the Queen at the premiere: … continue reading

Latifah, Pfeiffer and Janney (oh my) in the new Hairspray trailer

I've been looking forward to the new Hairspray movie since the moment I heard it was being made.
