Karman KregloeDinah 2008 AfterEllen.com AfterNoon: ImprovThe second half of the AfterEllen.com AfterNoon at Dinah last week was a hilarious train wreck — or "cluster screw" as our host Michelle Paradise politely called it — of comedy improv starring several of the AfterEllen.com vloggers: Cathy DeBuono, Jill Bennett, Marnie Alton, Karman Kregloe, Dara Nai, and Bridget McManus.
Dee and Jenn (Come With Me If You Want to Live) joined Lori and I as judges, using criteria Dara came up with — so you know it's slightly off-kilter.
Highlights of the event? Too many to mention, but here are a few of my favorites: Michelle getting heckled for accidentally picking on a woman with a broken toe; Karman and Cathy flirting in Santa's workshop; Bridget and Marnie's adventures in Amsterdam's red light district; and Jill taking orders from Dara in a barn. Then there's Karman and Dara's rendition of A Sound of Music...well, you'll just have to watch for yourself and tell me what your favorite moments / lines / scenes are. Check it out now here: Thanks to Michelle for graciously agreeing to host, and to the rest of the vloggers for participating. It was a lot of fun to watch live — hopefully it will translate on-screen! (And in case you missed it, also check out the AfterEllen.com AfterNoon stand-up performances at Dinah, our Dinah red carpet interviews , and Julie Goldman's Dinah stand-up routine from Logo's Comedy Cocktail Hour.) Submitted on April 16, 2008 at 3:45 pm You Can't Take Them Anywhere! Dinah 2008For our latest YCTTA adventure, Bridget and I traveled to Palm Springs for that legendary event known as The Dinah. It's where lesbians from all over gather together to dance in their swimsuits, wait in line for drink tickets, and avoid their exes.
In addition to that kind of fun, quite a few celezbians were participating in the fashion show, performing music and comedy, and touting their wares. We talked to a number of them on the red carpet Friday night before the fire marshal shut us down for causing a mob scene. (Yeah, we're pretty proud of that one. No, they did not hose us down, much to Bridget's dismay.) Among them were Dani Campbell (A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila), who told us about her new fashion line, and Kate McKinnon of The Big Gay Sketch Show, who confessed her obsession with the Food Network. Jenny Shimizu (Dante's Cove) showed up in colorful attire, reminding us that we were not as cool as her because we actually followed directions and wore white to the white party. (Just kidding! We didn't need to be reminded that we're not as cool as Jenny. We already knew.) So put on your best white outfit, sit back, and hear what the celesbians have to say about Dinah... I conned my sister Autumn into moderating the game, and she did her best at maintaining some semblance of order and fair play. (She knows how lesbians can be.) I won't spoil it for you, but let's just say that some of us so-called "lesbian pop culture experts" knew a little less about obscure lesbian films and Buffy the Vampire Slayer than might be expected. If you'd like to play along with us, get your pen and paper, your poker chips, and practice your smack talk. If possible, have a swimming pool handy to dunk your losing opponent. Submitted on April 7, 2008 at 2:03 pm You Can't Take Them Anywhere! RenoThis week, we kick off the travel portion of our new show with a trip to sunny Reno, Nevada (made possible by the nice people at the Reno-Sparks Convention & Visitors Authority). While in Reno, we stayed at the posh Peppermill Hotel Casino, snowboarded ourselves into exhaustion at Mt. Rose Ski Tahoe and Northstar at Tahoe Resort, were taught to snow mobile like champions by our friends at Lake Tahoe Snowmobile Tours, and were pampered with facials and manicures/pedicures by Jenny O and friends at Salon 7, and luxurious massages at the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Stillwater Spa.
In between all of the pampering and outdoor activities, we managed to squeeze in some As you watch our show, please remember that we're dedicated to doing the tough job of first class world travel just for you. Not everyone would be willing to fly to exotic locales, enjoy fine dining and the very best that cities around the world have to offer, but Bridget and I are totally committed to our mission to have fun on behalf of lesbians everywhere. We're happy to seek out ideal lesbian travel destinations on your behalf, it's really no trouble at all. Submitted on March 25, 2008 at 2:29 pm You Can't Take Them Anywhere! The 2008 HRC GalaBridget McManus and I recently stormed the red carpet at the annual HRC gala in Los Angeles where we spoke to some very lovely people. Legendary friend-of-the-gays Judith Light humbled us with her thoughtful and dignified responses to our ridiculous questions. Then we caught up with Andrea Meyerson, being honored that night with the Local Hero Award for founding the lesbian social network “Women on a Roll." She introduced us to some of her friends, distracted us with a jaw-dropping gown, and once again confirmed my assertion that she is the lesbian Goldie Hawn. We also chatted up some of our favorite reality tv gay boys, Christian Siriano (Project Runway) and Jesse Brune (Work Out). Christian told us all about the perks of his new found fame (free fast food!) and gave Bridget some very loving and gentle feedback about her outfit. (If you hear someone calling her a "hot mess," it was me, not Christian.) Jesse Brune told us all about being raised by lesbians (we are only slightly more ferocious than wolves) and how the gay ladies in his life have taught him the joys of processing. We love him. Finally, after some excruciating "will she or won't she talk to us" drama, Iron Chef America's openly gay chef Cat Cora — honored that night with the Hero for Visibility Award — talked to us about her favorite spices, what superhero powers she'd most like to possess, and teased us with a description of the hot new chef uniforms we'll be seeing this season on ICA.
She even gave a little shout out to AE. Soon after, I proposed to her and we were escorted off the property. … continue reading Submitted on March 21, 2008 at 2:28 pm You Can't Take Them Anywhere! IN Magazine Anniversary PartyIn the first episode of their new red carpet/travel series, You Can't Take Them Anywhere!, Bridget McManus and Karman Kregloe attend IN Los Angeles magazine's 10th anniversary party and ask fun and vaguely inappropriate questions of partygoers, including actresses Carlease Burke and Thea Gill, IN Magazine's resident lesbian Courtney Jackson, radio host Doria Biddle, and Women on a Roll founder Andrea Meyerson. They also run into two women who work for the June Mazer Lesbian Archives and discuss their favorite items in the collection. And of course, there's the requisite drunk guy (it wouldn't be a party without one!). On the next You Can't Take Them Anywhere!, Karman and Bridget invade Tahoe! Submitted on March 7, 2008 at 2:34 am SHE MADE ME WATCH THIS! Oscars 2008This weekend, I convinced Lori to leave Alaska for a few days and meet me in L.A. just to film a special 2008 Oscars edition of She Made Me Watch This! (OK, that's not really why I wanted to see her — but we thought we'd squeeze in a vlog while we were there.) Since we've seen almost none of the movies nominated this year, we invited Bridget McManus and Karman Kregloe to join us for the post-Oscars analysis in our hotel room (hence the bad lighting) — Bridget because she's actually seen the movies, and Karman, because, well, she's fun to have around (Bridget's not exactly terrible company, either).
Naturally, the vlog got away from us only a few minutes in, with Bridget doing an interpretive dance, me ranting about discrimination against blondes, and Karman smacking Bridget upside the head for making fun of her Stevie Nicks infatuation. Lori mostly just tried to stay out of harm's way. If you don't mind Oscar coverage that's only 30 percent about the Oscars, then this is definitely the vlog episode for you! If you want substantive Oscars coverage, read Dorothy Snarker's entertaining and informative Best of Oscar's 80th blog post. Or do both, and you'll probably have more fun than you did actually watching the Oscars (honestly, if I had to watch one more performance from Enchanted, someone was going to lose an eye!) Look for the next new SMMWT! episode in mid-March, when Lori finally returns to New York (yay!). Submitted on February 26, 2008 at 4:06 pm Brunch With Bridget: Episode 4Jill Bennett and Karman Kregloe play Truth or Dare with Bridget on this week's Brunch With Bridget. I won't spoil it for you, but two people swap pajamas, and someone has to make out with Baby Bridget.
It's lesbian slumber party tomfoolery at its finest! Submitted on January 27, 2008 at 5:21 am We're Getting Nowhere: "The L Word" 5.1Yeah, it's true. We've been waiting for this. America's Next Top Model was fine, but we've had to make our own gay fun with that show (wigs, kielbasa sausages, need I say more?). But The L Word? Our work is half done for us!
Our first blog of the new year is also our first L Word vlog of the year. For the inaugural episode, we talk about everything from podcasts (heh) to how to choose a wingman. We also discuss: 1.) Why Jane Lynch is a genius We talk about other stuff too, but you'll have to watch the vlog to find out what. Oh, all right, I'll give you a hint: bondage. Welcome back to Nowhere! Note: starting next week, episodes of WGN will be posted on Wednesdays. Submitted on January 10, 2008 at 3:05 pm Michelle Paradise's Worst Date StoriesA few months ago, Michelle Paradise asked you to submit your best and worst dating stories — and did you ever! There are over a hundred hilariously bad date stories, and Michelle gathered together four of your favorite women — Marnie Alton, Dara Nai, Karman Kregloe and Jill Bennett — to re-enact some of the best ones, with Lori and I "directing" (which in this case, meant zooming the camera in and out, refreshing their drinks, and trying to keep the cats out of the frame).
As you can guess from the photo, much chaos ensued. Some of my favorite moments? Marnie as a "hot RN," Dara as a cop who can't get her handcuffs off her belt buckle, Michelle moonwalking, Karman's puppet love, and Jill overdosing on pharmaceuticals while on a dinner date.
They also award a fantastic prize to one of you unsuspecting AftereEllen.com readers who submitted a story. I don't want to give away the surprise, but you impatient types who want to know what the prize is now can click here. (To find out if you won, you'll just have to watch the vlog!) The final vlog was pretty long — almost an hour and a half — but since it was too funny to cut out much, I just split it into two videos. And I figure this will keep you busy while AfterEllen.com is on a break next week. So grab a cup of coffee/can of soda/glass of Submitted on December 22, 2007 at 6:17 am SHE MADE ME WATCH THIS! Lesbian Celebrity Taboo! It's the Lesbian Celebrity Taboo edition of She Made Me Watch This! with a fun new '70s-style intro and guestbian Karman Kregloe (since she was crashing on our couch, we figured we'd get some more work out of her). This is our video version of the board game Taboo with a lesbian twist, in which we try to guess the famous lesbian (or bisexual woman) based on progressively easier clues. Think you know your celezbians? See how well you do with brilliant clues like "she has a girlfriend who's a model", "she can't act", "she had really big hair in the '90s" and "she played a spy and a queen." Also discover how cute Lori looks in a baseball hat (not that I'm biased), why I was a fan of Cindy Crawford as a child, and why Karman likes to play the X-Box game Jaws. Submitted on October 5, 2007 at 6:01 pm South of Nowhere Video Blog: Episode 3.6The most recent episode of South of Nowhere, "Fighting Crime," featured little fighting or crime. Unless you consider the lack of cute girls kissing each other a crime, which of course the three of us do. Don't be fooled by the picture below, all things Spashley are still decidedly off at this point on SoN. Yes, there are undertones of attraction and flirtation, but they remain submerged in the primordial goo of Ashley's narcissism. But we're not giving up hope!
In our video blog this week, we discuss:
Please note that an egg was harmed in the making of this video blog. Finally, we mention an upcoming "extravaganza" season finale blog--real actors (besides Jill), a real director, a hot tub, etc.--but we mixed up the dates for when that episode is going to air. It's not the next episode, but the one after-- for the mid-season "finale." The next episode of our blog will be whacktastic business as usual. Sorry about that. I don't know how I got it wrong. I guess I was just all jacked up on Mountain Dew! … continue reading Submitted on September 13, 2007 at 9:35 pm |
