Talking “Glee” With Heather Morris, Jenna Ushkowitz and Jayma Mays

While it was mostly the Glee kids at the Fox party, Jayma Mays, who plays school counselor Emma Pillsbury, also graced the red carpet, looking every bit as stunning as her younger co-stars.

Asked what’s in store for Emma, the actress says, “Well she actually admitted that she had an issue with OCD and she was a germaphobe, and she actually sought out help for that and she’s already taking medicine. I’m not an expert on this in any way, but from what research I’ve done, I know sometimes medicine helps people and sometimes it doesn’t. So for me I’m just really interested to see where they decide to take that storyline. And how much that helps her and how that’s going to help her relationship develop with Will. Yeah, that’s all really interesting to me. That’s going to be a good arc for the character.”

Shows like Glee don’t come along very often and while all actors dream of this sort of success, it surely comes with a price. Asked how she deals with the pressure, Mays says, “I don’t know that it really hit me that much until [my husband and I] went on vacation in Italy this summer. And there were people there and we’d kind of get swarmed from time to time and it hit me then, I was like, ‘Oh, wow this is great people are watching everywhere.”

Is that kind of attention ever hard to cope with? “I don’t know,” says Mays. “It’s never really been a problem for me. I don’t know if I get as much attention as the kids do. I think maybe it might be a little more intense for them, so maybe I’m lucky I’m under the radar a little bit more. But our fans are so nice and so lovely and we have the nicest people coming up to us, saying amazing things. That the show brings them joy and adds to their life and has helped them in some way. I don’t know. There is no coping with that. That’s just a wonderful gift.”

Glee isn’t Mays’ only project she’s promoting. The Smurfs is just opening around the world and in it, Mays plays Grace Winslow, who is married to Patrick Winslow, played by Neil Patrick Harris. Asked about working with Harris, there is no doubt as to Mays’ feelings. “Oh my gosh, amazing, amazing! I’ve been a huge fan of his for a long long long time, and I knew when I was auditioning to play the role in the movie, I was auditioning to play the role of his wife. So when I got the part I was really excited. He’s so talented and he’s so fun to be around and I think that’s the nicest thing. He’s as much fun to be around as he is to work with.”
