Viola Davis adds her personality to “United States of Tara”

When Meryl Streep accepted the SAG best actress award for Doubt this year, her thanks to fellow cast members culminated in a shout out to, “the gigantically gifted Viola Davis – my God, somebody give her a movie!”

My thoughts exactly.

Davis’ portrayal of Mrs. Miller, mother of the alleged abuse victim in the film, finally brought her the recognition on screen that she has on stage — acclaim that includes a Tony Award for best featured actress for her 2001 role in King Hedley II.

So far, Streep’s cry seems to have gone unheeded by film producers, hard as it is to believe that anyone could ignore Magnificent Meryl. But at least one television network was listening. Showtime has cast Davis in Season 2 of its original series United States of Tara.

Davis will play the recurring role of Lynda B. Dozier, an “unconventional artist” who is significant to Tara (Toni Collette) and her daughter Kate (Brie Larson). Davis first appears in Episode 2 and will be in seven of Tara‘s 12 episodes next season.

We don’t know much beyond that right now, but with Diablo Cody as showrunner, we can be sure that Davis’ talent will not be wasted. And it’s nice to see some color in the all-white cast.

Meanwhile, look for a lovely photo spread with Viola Davis in the current issue of O, The Oprah Magazine. She is one gorgeous woman. And I think she just moved to the top of my personal list of who should play Michelle Obama on screen.

Are you looking forward to seeing Davis on Tara? How do you think she’ll fit in, plot-wise?
