Sasha Pieterse on Emison and if Paige will ever return on “Pretty Little Liars”

When Pretty Little Liars returns tomorrow night to ABC Family’s newly renamed Freeform, the Liars will be five years older and (hopefully) wiser. While we’ve gotten a few hints at what’s in store for Emily, Spencer, Hanna, Aria and Alison in Season 6B, there are still so many mysteries, which is par for the course with PLL. But one thing fans are dying to know is what lesbian Liar Emily’s future looks like, and if it includes any of the women she’s been paired with before.

Series stars Sasha Pieterse and Lucy Hale were both at ABC’s party during the Television Critics Association Winter Tour in Pasadena on Saturday night where I asked about a possibility of Emison reconnecting romantically before season’s end.

“Our Emison fans are so awesome. That’s all I hear,” Sasha said with a laugh. “It’s hard for me to say because I’m not Marlene [King]; I’m not a writer. I think Emison will live on. I really do think so. Marlene puts it really well: They’ll always have a thing for each other. There will always be something there. But it’s more of just an amazing friendship they will always have.”

In the time jump, Alison is engaged and later married, and Sasha says she’s “really happy.”

“Emily’s going through some stuff but she always figures it out. And I think there will always be a good friendship there and they will always be there for each other if they needed to. But at this point in time,” Sasha said, “it’s just a friendship.”

On set, Sasha says she and Shay Mitchell playfully pay tribute to Emison fans, though.

“We joke about it all the time. But for the most part, when it comes to on screen, we have to keep it friendly or whatever the targeted scene is supposed to be,” Sasha said. “But we do in rehearsal-we’ll always wink at each other or something like that.”

Neither Sasha nor Lucy was aware of any return for Lindsey Shaw either, who plays Emily’s other love interest and fan favorite Paige.

“I don’t know! I hope so, I love Lindsey,” Lucy said.

“I love Lindsey, too,” Sasha echoed.

“There’s always a possibility,” Lucy continued. “I think she’s talked about a lot. Hopefully, she’ll make a comeback.”

As for the end of the series after Season 7 next year, both actors say it’s bittersweet to move on from the characters they’ve played for six years.

“It’s been such an awesome time in our lives,” Sasha said. “Not many people get to say they’re on a successful television show. And I mean, it’s more than that, though. We have such amazing crew members and writers and producers and everyone in the cast, from top to bottom, everyone is so amazing.”

“All good things must come to an end,” Lucy agreed. “I think our last season will be the best and yeah, it’s bittersweet, but I’m excited about the future. I think we all are. This launched our careers, so it’s given us all a platform.”

Pretty Little Liars returns to Freeform on Tuesday, January 12.
