“Off the Map” casts its lesbian couple

ABC’s Off the Map has found its lesbians. Cynthia Stevenson and April Grace have been booked to play a lesbian couple on an upcoming episode of the medical drama, AfterEllen.com has learned exclusively.

As we reported exclusively in January, the medical drama about a group of young doctors – starring Wonderfalls favorite Caroline Dhavernas, Mamie Gummer (The Good Wife) and Zach Gilford (Friday Night Lights) – will feature a lesbian couple who are patients being treated at the tropical medical clinic after they’re involved in a paragliding accident.

Lesbian audiences might recognize Stevenson from her three-episode arc on Showtime’s The L Word, during which she played Roberta Collie, an adoption-case social worker assigned to evaluate Bette (Jennifer Beals) and Tina’s (Laurel Holloman) adoption petition during the series’ third season.

She most recently played Cate’s (Shiri Appleby) mother, Laverne Cassidy, on the CW’s Life Unexpected. Off the Map marks her second appearance on a Shonda Rhimes series as she guest starred on an episode of Grey’s Anatomy during Season 6.

Off the Map, created by Rhimes protégé Jenna Bans, also marks Grace’s second gig on a Shondaland series; she guest starred on a Season 4 episode of Grey’s. The actress has a long string of credits, including playing a foul-mouthed sex guru in 1999’s Tom Cruise starrer Magnolia. Grace also has had roles on Lost, Joan of Arcadia and Pretty Little Liars, in which she played Agent Cooper.

The upcoming episode will see the longtime couple embarking on a second honeymoon with the hope of injecting more life into their troubled marriage.

“One of the women is clinging to the marriage more than the other one is,” Bans told AfterEllen.com in January. “It’s a really nice metaphor for the medical story we’re telling with them and it ends up really affecting Ben (Martin Henderson) in his personal relationship on-screen with Ryan (Twilight‘s Rachelle Lefevre).”

Stevenson and Grace are set to appear in the series’ penultimate episode of the season, which likely will air in late March or early April, pending preemptions.

Off the Map airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. on ABC.
