Kristen Wiig and female friends bring the funny in the “Bridesmaids” trailer

Can women be as funny as men? Dumb question. Can women be successful at the box office while being as funny as men? Better question. And it’s a question the new female ensemble comedy Bridesmaids looks to answer. The film from Superbad and Knocked Up uber-producer Judd Apatow gives Saturday Night Live regular Kristen Wiig her first leading role. It also stars former SNLer Maya Rudolph, Damages star Rose Byrne, Mike and Molly‘s (though more fondly remembered from the Gilmore Girls) Melissa McCarthy, Reno 911!‘s Wendi McLendon-Covey and The Office‘s Ellie Kemper.

Written by Wiig and her writing partner Annie Mumolo and directed by Freaks and Geeks creator Paul Feig, the project is one of the few high-profile female film comedies that isn’t preceded by the word “romantic.” Instead, it’s more in the vein of modern-day male comedies with gross-out hijinks and variations on arrested development. The just-released trailer seeks to make it abundantly clear, this ain’t no Sex and the City.

Finally, fart jokes for women. And they said the Equal Rights Amendment was dead. Comparisons to The Hangover are inevitable. A group of friends goes to Vegas for a friend’s bachelor/bachelorette party and all hell breaks loose. And while there doesn’t appear to be a tiger or Mike Tyson cameo, Bridesmaids does have puppies and Jon Hamm.

As great as it is to have a female-centered comedy, it’s a tad disappointing to see so much of the already well-tread wedding humor get rehashed in the trailer. Haha, sad single people. Haha, smug married people. Though I am happy that it appears they haven’t made McCarthy’s butch bridesmaid a lesbian complete with standard-issue lesbian jokes.

Still the cast is undeniably great and I’d pay $10 just to watch Kristen make faces for 90 minutes. So, obviously, I’m in. Let’s just hope it’s as funny, if not a whole lot funnier, than the boys. So, what do you think? Are you saving the date?
