“Juno B-Sides” — what might have been

Here’s something I never knew I wanted: a recording of 15 songs that were almost in Juno. Juno B-Sides: Almost Adopted Songs, will be available on iTunes starting April 8. Other digital music services will have it May 13. I’m not sure I’ve ever heard of a collection of songs that didn’t make the cut for a film soundtrack. But I’m kind of looking forward to it. I think.

The Juno soundtrack almost equaled the movie in popularity; it went to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 earlier this year. And since a sequel to the film has been ruled out – a wise decision, IMO – this may be the closest we get to more Juno. Yeah, I know it’s a commercial ploy to milk more profits from the movie. But if the music is good, that’s OK. I’m easy. According to Juno director Jason Reitman, who chose the tracks for B-Sides, he felt that the songs that were a part of the film’s unedited story deserved a hearing. “The following tracks at one point or another were a part of Juno‘s essential elements,” he wrote in the liner notes, “as intimately bonded to the movie as Juno’s striped shirt and Paulie’s TicTacs. Some were attached to scenes that got cut. Some seemed perfect at the beginning, but didn’t quite match the film as it evolved.” Tracks include more from Kimya Dawson, Belle & Sebastian, Buddy Holly and others, along with songs from artists not featured in the original soundtrack. Ellen Page sings “Zub Zub,” penned by Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody, from a scene cut from the movie. Maybe we’ll get to see it on the DVD (to be released April 14, purely by coincidence, I’m sure). You can sample B-Sides at the Rhino Records website. Judging by what I heard, I’ll probably spend the $10 to download it. At the very least, I’m going to figure out how to make Kimya Dawson’s version of the “Twentieth Century Fox Fanfare” my ring tone. What do you think? Is B-Sides too much hype? Or is too much Juno just not possible?
